The parish of Kilspindie is in the Presbytery of Perth, Synod of Perth and Stirling. There were originally two parishes, Kilspindie and Rait; but at what period their union took place, has not been ascertained; it must have been prior to 1634. The walls of the Church of Rait are still standing.
The parish of Kilspindie is bounded on the west by two detached parts Nos.1 & 3 of Kinnoul Parish, by Scone Parish, and St. Martins parish; on the north and north east, by St. Martin's parish, by a detached part of Caputh parish and by Kinnaird parish; on the east by the parish of Errol and on the south by the parish of Kinfauns.
The parish lies partly in the Carse of Gowrie, and partly among the Sidlaw Hills, about halfway between Perth and Dundee. The general appearance of the ground is pleasing, and presents to the eye an agreeable variety of moor and cultivated land. Towards the southern extremity, the ground is flat; at about a quarter of a mile farther north, it rises with a slope, for two miles, till it reaches an elevation of more than 600 feet; intersected in three different places by the burns of Rait, Kilspindie, and Pitroddie. The remaining part has a northern aspect.
Agriculture is in a flourishing state and the system of

husbandry that has been pursued, for many years, is very superior. The farms are kept under excellent management; and all are provided with thrashing mills. Perth and Dundee are the nearest market towns, distant about 8 and 13 miles respectively from the parish Church. There are three small villages, Kilspindie, Rait, and Pitroddie. In each of these a few hands are employed in the manufacture of linen fabrics for Dundee Market.
The Church, with its surrounding burying ground, encompassed by spreading elms and ash trees, stands in the village of Kilspindie, on a rising ground, formed by the junction of two small rivulets. The situation is delightful and well chosen for the convenience of the majority of the population. It is a plain building, comfortably seated for about 350, and in a good state of repair. The manse, which is old, is situated within a hundred yards of the Church. The stipend consists of 15 chalders, half meal, half barley. There are two glebes, and the rent of both may amount to Thirteen Pounds. New Statistical Account.
The parish contains 6258 Statute acres by computation from the Ordnance Plans. There are no detached portions of this parish, nor are there any detached portions of another parish situated within it. |

This Castle is built on the brink of a deep Glen, amidst two eminences, and bears in one part the venerable date of 1194. It is now however greatly enlarged and modernised by additional buildings but the castellated form is preserved. This ancient mansion was formerly used as a place of strength, and in 1642 stood a siege, during the civil war in Oliver Cromwell's time. Here the Chevalier St George Son of James II, slept, Jany [January] 7. 1716, on his way from Glasgow to Scone, where he was proclaimed King - In 1746 the castle was completely ransacked by the Government troops The fortalice demolished, and a great part of the building razed to the ground, in consequence of the attachment of the Thriepland Family to the cause of the unfortunate house of Stewart. It is now in excellent repair and the residence of the present proprietor Sir Patrick Murray Thriepland Bart. [Baronet]. The gardens and grounds are beautifully kept, and are embellished with many works of art and antiquities. |

087 |
This object Occupies a Conspicuous Situation on the summit of a steep Bank overlooking the Castle of Evelick. The Remains are in good Preservation; it was strongly defended on the N. [North] West side, the other sides being very steep required no artificial defences. It is not Known by what people it was Constructed but the probability is that it is one of those British Hill Forts so numerous throughout the Country. |
