The parish of Kilmadock is in the Presbytery of Dunblane, Synod of Perth and Stirling Patron Lady Willoughby de Eresby It is near the middle of the Southern verge of Perthshire and is bounded on the north, by a detached part No. 4 of Monzievaird and Strowan parish; on the east and south east, by the parishes of Dunblane, Lecropt, and Kincardine; on the south by Stirlingshire; and on the west, by a detached part of Kincardine, and by Port of Monteith, and Callander parishes
The soil exhibits every variety, from the richest carse clay on the plains of the Forth, to the poorest heath clad moor on the hills of the north. The whole of the Teith, the Carsegrounds on the South, And much of the other Sections, are well enclosed and highly cultivated. Various roads intersecting one another, traverse the southern division of the parish; two run up the Vale of the Teith, one on each side of the river, leading the way from Stirling to the gorgeous Scenery of the Trossachs and Loch Katrine on the one hand, and to that of Loch Earn and Loch Tay on the other; but no road invites the access of a wheeled vehicle beyond the second ridge of the parish, or toward the Braes of Doune.
There are no detached portions of this parish nor are there any detached portions of another parish situated within it. It consists of about 24782 statute acres.
The ancient parish Church having become ruinous, a new church was built in the town of Doune, in the year 1756; since which period, the parish has been frequently called Doune, and having its ancient Market Cross it is therefore considered, in this Name Book as the principal

The manse was lately repaired, and a very excellent set of new office houses built by the heritors. |

It is the prevailing opinion in the neighbourhood that a Castle Stood at this place, but there are no vestiges of the foundation or any tradition in the Ph [Parish] connected with it. The house at the Craigton, the only one now standing of a number once there, must have been built of the stones, Some of which are chiseled in a superior manner, and are not generally met with in Cottar houses. |

BRIDGE OF TEITH |
Bridge of Teith |
Revd.[Reverend] Mr.McCarrow D.D. [Doctor of Divinity], Mr.Cummings, Mr.Simpson, New Statistical Account, Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland |
125 |
A Substantial Stone bridge with two arches Situated on the River Teith, and 7¾ miles from Stirling on the turnpike road to Callendar.
The following is taken from the New Statistical Account. The Bridge of Teith is a Strong building of two arches. It was erected in 1535 by Robert Spittal, tailor to King James IV. or rather to Queen Margaret. Tradition assigns to it a somewhat singular origin. Once on coming to the ferry, Mr.Spittal found he had left his money behind- excepting as it is sometimes added, a small coin which he cut in two with his Scissors, offering one half as his fare. The boatman refused to ferry him over, And the generous tailor built the bridge. Inside the western parapet of the bridge, are the armorial bearings of England and of Scotland, in separate shields surmounted by crowns. At some distance from these is the following inscription, in the centre of which is a Shield with a device resembling a Spread eagle, And in the base a pair of large Scissors formed in saltier:- "IN.GOD.AL.MY.TRUST.QUOD._TTEL. THE.X.DA.OF.SEPTEMBER.IN.THE.ZEIR.OF.GOD.M.VCXXXV.ZEIRS.FUNDIT.WES.THIS.BRIG.BE.ROBERT.SPITELL.TAILZER.TO.THE.MAIST.NOBLE.PRECES.MARGARET._NG.JAMES.THE.FEIRD.-OF.ALMIS." The following is the
translation, copies of which are frequently to be met with in the parish. In God is all my trust quoth Spittel the 10th day of September in the year of God 1535 years, founded was this bridge by Robert Spittel, tailor to the Most Noble Princess Margaret, Queen to James the Fourth_of Alms. |

Situated in a field adjoining to and west of the farm of Netherton. this field is universally known in the neighbourhood as the "Roman Camp". The ground is very singularly undulated and presents something of the appearance of a Camp although there is nothing sufficiently defined to determine its exact nature. It is said that several hooks, used for suspending camp kettles, were found here some 20 years since and which bore every appearance of being of Roman manufacture. |

Church (Ph. [Parish] ruins of) |

124 |
This is an old ruin situated about a hundred yards north-west from the parish manse. There is very little known of the early history of this old church, and nothing whatever of the date of its erection. It has been conjectured that it was built about the beginning of the twelfth century, and dedicated to St. Madocus, one of the Culdees, the remains of whom very probably lie in the grave yard in which the ruin is situated. The last time that this church was used as a place of worship, was in the april of the year 1743, shortly after which time the greater part of the stones of the building, was conveyed to Doune and used as materials for the erection of

"Formerly the parish church stood at Kilmadock, the site of
the ancient monastery of Madocus; but it was taken down in 1744."
"Though the church be removed to Doune, the most of the ancient families
bury at Kilmadock, where the minister still resides with his Manse
and Glebe." Taken from the New and Old Statistical Account.
As the dedicatory name of this church is very doubtful it is
not inserted but as the church seems to built at a place formerly
called Kilmadock which agrees with the parish name it is thought
desirable to prefix Kilmadock to the ancient parish church |

The Director General
Ordnance Surveys
Southampton
Sir,
May I draw your attention to an error
which occurs in Sheet 131.3 of the 25.344
inch Survey map of Kilmadock Parish, Perthshire
The farm house No.1205 is there named
Munnieston, and No.1220 is named Mackeanston.
In point of fact it is No.1205 which is Mackeanston
and No.1220 which is Munnieston, and the
only error is that on the map the names have
been transposed.
The same mistake appears in the six and
one inch scale maps
I am Sir Your obedt [obedient] servant

The ruins of a house situated on the South side of the road leading from Stirling to Thornhill, and about half a mile from the latter place, It is said to have been a Roman Catholic Manse At the opposite side of the stream below, is a Well, Called by the country people the 'holy well'; It is also stated that there had been a place of worship, and grave yard, near this place It is on the Earl of Moray's property.
I have made enquiries respecting this Chapel & graveyard, of the best authorities & can obtain no information, respecting their Site, I also find that this well is not generally known as the Holy Well, therefore it would not do to write that name, the ruins are merely old Cot houses. |

This is an old castle situated on a narrow neck of land formed by the confluence of the Ardoch Burn with the river Teith. It consists of a large quadrangular yard, with the once inhabited part of the building on the northern Side of it. There is a round tower on the north-eastern corner of the castle which is about eighty feet in height - the highest part of the castle. The height of the wall of the yard is about forty feet. It is the opinion of some people that this castle was once surrounded by a moat, and of others that its approach was defended by a deep trench, similar to the ones before Edinburgh and Stirling castles: the latter is the most probable, as the elevated position of the castle together with the distance that water is below it, would have rendered the keeping of the moat in a supply of water a very difficult matter. Around the exterior of the castle and along the top of an artificial mound, on which the castle

is built, may be seen the foundation of a wall, from which it has been inferred that the castle was once encompassed by a strong wall for the purpose of defence. Everything connected with the origin of this castle is entirely obscure. It is neither known when nor by whom it was built. The general opinion is, that it was erected during the fourteenth century, at which time it was the seat of the Earls of Monteith. It is said that Mary, Queen of Scots, resided in this castle. In the sixteenth century it was often the residence of Margaret, wife of James the fourth. It is now in the hands of the Earl of Moray Doune Lodge, Nr. [Near] Doune. The whole of the castle is in a ruinous state. The upper roof is entirely away. |
