[Situation] In the east end of Perthshire.
A small parish in the eastern side of Perthshire and almost entirely in the district of the Carse of Gowrie. It is bounded on the north by the parish of Abernyte and partly by Longforgan, on the east and North-east by Longforgan, on the South-east by the Firth of Tay, on the South-west by Errol and on the west by Kinnaird. Its distance from Perth is about 13 miles and from Dundee about 9. It is of an elongated but very irregular form and measures about 4 miles from north to south, and about 3 from east to west. The area of the parish as recently computed from the Ordnance Survey plans is 9400.576 imperial acres. The parish with few exceptions is quite level but commands a delightful view of water and hill scenery and is one of most fertile in the rich district in which it lies. The soil is rich carse land or alluvial soil and is well improved by lime and other manure and in the highest state of cultivation producing heavy crops of grain, &c. The parish has several quarries of good freestone. Roads intersect it in every direction. The Dundee and Perth Railway passes through part of it. The present parish comprehends the ancient parishes of Inchture and Rossie which were united in 1670. - This parish is in the presbytery of Dundee and Synod of Angus and Mearns. Patron the Crown. There are no detached portions of Inchture, nor are there any detached portions of any other parish within it. |

[Additional note:]
"Castlehill and Baledgarno, the village lying at its base,
are deserving of peculiar notice under this head. The author"
(Boethius) "just quoted from tells us that the Castle which doubtless
once stood on the eminence alluded to and which gave rise to
the name the village beside it still bears was founded by Edgar
fourth son of Malcolm and St. Margaret who was anointed King
of Scotland by Lodovick Bishop of St. Andrews in 1001,* of whom
he says, "he had no uncouth waris nor trubyl in his dayis and governit
his realm in gude peace and was haldin in mair veneration than terrour
amang his peppl," also that it was repaired by Alexander his brother
who succeeded him, who is represented as building the Abbey of Scone
of Canons regular and dedicating it to the honour of the Trinity and St. Michael and also the Abbey
of Canons regular in honour of St. Colme and Completing the Abbey of Dunfermline besides endowing
the Abbey of St. Colme and the Convent thereof as well as the Church of St. Andrews.
The Castle he expressly says was foundit by Edgar in Gowry who got certane landis fra the Erle of Gowry and annexit his name to the Castle.
And some of its foundations and pavements have been met with in preparing for the erection of the building now
Standing on its site.

The only other antiquity of interest is the Castle of Moncur
which is said to have been destroyed by fire about the beginning
of last century and is now in ruins.
A late author quoting from the Annals of Ulster the most valuable of
the Irish Chronicles states that it was near this Castle during a
Civil war amongst the Picts that Hungus defeated Nectan 728 two years
before he slew Elpin at Pitlessie in the neighbouring parish of Liff
and became triumphant over every competitor for the throne.

[Powgavie Note]
It would appear from a
correspondence with the
Examiner Corpl. [Corporal] Webster that
there is some attempt made
to distinguish the farm name above
from the name Powgavie
as applied to the houses about the little harbour
or creek, but as this is only a difference in spelling
the same name, I think it is better spell it alike in both cases
