This appears to be the remains of an ancient British hill fort. It is on the summit of a steep conical shaped hill, very steep or precipitous on its western side. The hill rises about 120 feet above the surrounding plain, and was therefore well adapted for such as a fort. The remains of the ramparts are still very distinct. The authorities quoted call it a Pictish Camp, which is of the same import as British hill forts. Therefore Fort (Remains of) is written on plan |

The Summit of Castle Law presents evident appearances of a fort having at Some remote period existed here. On the south side of the Summit are the remains of four or five ditches of which appear to have been rings of the fort or fortification, although one or two of them appear to have been complete rings, it would appear that the others were not necessary round the north & West Sides as the hill here, is, in itself, very steep & would Seem to form, naturally, a barrier to the access of an enemy, on the east side embankments form themselves into what has the appearance of an approach or entrance which does not appear on any other Side There are no appearances of any walls having ever been here, although the top of the inner embankment appears to have been constructed of loose, round, Small Stones, which are now nearly covered with grass. these Stones have not the appearance of having been built, they are too Small, & irregular having the appearance of what might be collected off a meadow etc. on the top or within inner ring are Several Small mounds of earth loose stones etc but no vestiges of any Kind of building. |

Note. As Castle Law is evidently a hill name let Castle Law be written so as to apply to the hill and Fort (Remains of) to the Fort.
Somewhat more than a mile South from Forgan is a place called
Castle-law. It is situated upon the Summit of a very high hill which
resembles a low cone. The Circumference of its area is about 500 yards. This
spot is defended on all sides by a Stone wall the vestiges of which are
yet to be Seen; these vestiges are of a form nearly circular and the walls
seem to have taKen their form from the top of the hill on which they are
built. Besides this wall there are also Several outworKs which
seem to have been formed for defence; particularly on the South
where the hill is less steep and the ground below higher, there are
three mounds of earth parallel to the wall and to each other. Within the area of this castle or fortification
are the vestiges of buildings; and there was erected by the former Lord Ruthven on this spot a sort of half tower
which is yet standing. This place commands a prospect of the Country to the mouth of the Tay or the German
Ocean on the east all Strathearn to the Grampian mountains
on the west a great part of Perthshire and Angushire on the north and North-east and the top of the
Lomond Hills on the South. The general opinion concerning Castle-law is that it had been a Danish fortification

Sheet 109 Plan 16 -- Trace 1 -- Parish of Forgandenny.
On the estate of Ardargie belonging to Mrs. Fechney and lying about a mile and a half south-west
of Castle-Law there is a beautifully preserved Roman Camp which has been so called from time
immemorial. Its walls and ditches are quite and almost entire. The proprietors have all
along prevented them from being altered in any way. This ancient encampment is situated upon
a high Sloping bank looking towards the west immediately above the May and commanding a wide
prospect of that part of the Ochils and also a view of the great Roman Road which passed
from the Tay to the encampment at Ardoch. From its position it must have been admirably fitted
to prevent any parties from descending in that direction to the adjacent valley of strathearn.
Its figure is an exact square each side of which is about 90 yards long. On its south side
it is defended by a deep hollow through which a small brook runs and on the remaining three
sides by deep trenches. The width of these trenches at the top is about 10 yards; their depth on the
sides next the encampment is about 14 while on the outside it is 10.

There are the remains of another fortification on what is called the Law of Drumbuils
belonging to the estate of Freeland about a mile south-east of the village. The Law is a
low craggy eminence; it is elliptical in its form; the south and west sides being a precipiteous
rock form of themselves a natural wall while on the north and east sides a wall has
been formed of very large granite boulders, many of which still occupy their original
position. This Law commands a beautiful and extensive view of the lower part of
Strathearn of the north part of the coast of Fife of the windings of the Tay and of
the Carse of Gowrie all the way to Dundee a distance of more than twenty miles.

Dear Sir,
a recent death
in my family reminds me
to write to you regarding
a small matter which
I think should be cor-
-rected in the ordnance
maps. In the parish
of Forgandenny, Perth
-shire, near the village,
is situated the Mansion
house of Rossie and to
the south of the house and
[continued on next page] |

|
|
|
[Page] 64B
[continued from page 64A]
close to the north side
of the garden wall is a
spot marked in the
maps "Burial ground
of the Oliphant Family" -
So far this was correct
that in 1856 the place was
adapted for burial and
a young child of the
family was interred there
in that year. But it
was never consecrated and
in 1872 I had the
old family burial ground
beside the parish Church
of Forgandenny entirely
taken up and vaulted so
that it could be used
for generations to come without
crowding and I have
the remains of the child
above mentioned removed
there.
Consequently the place
in the Policies of Rossie
marked as a burial ground
is no longer such and
it may be as well to make
a note of this when any
correction of the Survey is
being made.
I am Sir's
Yours obediently
