Duff - The son of Malcom l. hastened to wield the potent sword of Indulf
This short reign was much infested by civil discord. Culen, the son Indulf
seems to have been instigated by Doncha, the abbot of Dunkeld, the Saint Dunstan
of Scotland, to claim the sceptre of his father, contrary to the constitutional usage. The
competitors met at Druracrub, in Strathearn, the Duncrub of the present day. The
conflict was contested by a valorous people, with the usual fury of civil war. Duf had
the good fortune to vindicate, by his victory, the constitutional rule. Doncha, the abbot
and Dubdou, the Maormor of Athol, met the fate which their rashness merited yet this victory
seems not to have been decisive. The friends of the pretender, and the partizans of the abbot, were
still powerful enough to drive Duf from Forteviot into the north. And he was assassinated
on the classic ground of Forres in the year 965, after a troublous reign of four years and a half
* Chron, No. 3 in Innes: the Ulster Annals place this battle in 964 A.D.

[Note]
Note The estate of Duncrub is a burgh of barony of which the village of
Dunning is part. Lord Rollo the proprietor is the baron. The
jurisdiction is still exercised by a baillie chosen by the baron
but the legal business done by him is very limitted being the decision
of a few petty cases within the barony. On fair days a staff of constables
chosen by the baron from his tenantry, attend at the fairs armed with
Lochaber axes and all litigants are brought before the baron baillie.
[Note] Note.
It is not competent to appeal from the baron baillie's to any other court except to the baron or
to the Court of Session i.e. the Sheriff or his substitute, or Justice of Peace cannot review a case
after the decision of the baillie
[Note] Note. It has been considered Scarcely worth
noticing the barony of Duncrub on the ordnance plans,
therefore the boundary has not been perambulated |

109 |
[Situation] On the South East Side of Broadwood
This is the Remains and Site of an Old Camp of a Somewhat Circular Shape, on the Estate of Garvock at the east angle of Broad Wood, on the Garvock Burn The portion marked Site has been removed by Cultivation; the Remains in the Wood are in tolerable preservation. The Main Camp appears to have Consisted of two Circular Ramparts or Banks on the West Howth; the East side rested on Garvock Glen; the North appears to have been the most strongly defended, having the remains of three Semicircular Ramparts - Enclosing the Ruins of a Small Building called the Ha' Tower which is supposed to have been used for defence and also as a Watch Tower or lookout Station and ascribed to the Romans Whether the Tower is is of the Same date of Construction as the Camp, or Subsequent, Cannot be ascertained. It is popularly Called a Roman Camp, but from its Shape and Situation, it is more probable, that it was Constructed by either the Picts or Caledonians. Nothing authentic can be Gleaned of its Origin in the Vicinity, - the Vague Traditions which pass Current ascribe its Construction to the Romans. |

THE SHIP
In the new Stat. Acct, [Statistical Account] mention is made of Ternavie as being the remains of a Roman Camp
and it is remarKed that it "resembles the hull of a ship inverted, hence as is Commonly supposed
its name (Terrae maris)". The object here refered to by the name Ternavie appears to be that Called The Ship
but all intelligent persons in the locality regard this object as a natural feature or rather
a land Slip which happened at Some remote period. It has no appearance of being the
Remains of a Fort, or Camp. In the Same volume is also remarKed that there is a Roman
Camp Called Ardargie in this parish but upon enquiry Ardargie Camp is not in the parish
of Dunning but in the adjoining parish. |
