109 | [Situation] On the South East Side of Broadwood This is the Remains and Site of an Old Camp of a Somewhat Circular Shape, on the Estate of Garvock at the east angle of Broad Wood, on the Garvock Burn The portion marked Site has been removed by Cultivation; the Remains in the Wood are in tolerable preservation. The Main Camp appears to have Consisted of two Circular Ramparts or Banks on the West Howth; the East side rested on Garvock Glen; the North appears to have been the most strongly defended, having the remains of three Semicircular Ramparts - Enclosing the Ruins of a Small Building called the Ha' Tower which is supposed to have been used for defence and also as a Watch Tower or lookout Station and ascribed to the Romans Whether the Tower is is of the Same date of Construction as the Camp, or Subsequent, Cannot be ascertained. It is popularly Called a Roman Camp, but from its Shape and Situation, it is more probable, that it was Constructed by either the Picts or Caledonians. Nothing authentic can be Gleaned of its Origin in the Vicinity, - the Vague Traditions which pass Current ascribe its Construction to the Romans. |
