A large farmsteading with offices, and a Corn Mill, all one storey in height, slated and in good repair. property of Lord Willoughby de Eseby. Drummond Castle.
"Milnab - or Mill of the Abbot, is now greatly reduced both in size and consequence from what it was in former days. We read in Malcolm's Memoirs, of a royal charter of the lands and mill of Milnab being granted in 1552 by James V to John Drummond, grandson of one of the Stewards of Strathearn. In the year 1677 mention is made of the lands and barony, which contained the town, mill, and mill-lands of Milnab. There was a religious house, connected with Inchaffray, near the mill; and the last generation but one remembered the ruins of it. The family of Milnab was a branch of the house of Drummond, and maintained a distinguished rank in the country for many generations. The line is now believed to be extinct, and the estate is the property of the Right Honourable Lord and Lady Willoughby de Eseby."

Alexander Monteath, esqr.
Thomas Soutar. Esqr.
Mr. Robert Arnott |

"The late Mr. Thomas Morison, builder in Edinburgh, who died upwards of eleven years ago, left the bulk of his property (which was very considerable) for the purpose of erecting and endowing an academy, where the higher branches of education might be taught. There is a preference given in Mr. Morison's will to Muthill, the place where he was born, and to Edinburgh, the place where he made his fortune; but his great object was to benefit his fellow-creatures: And, accordingly by, his trustees were vested with the fullest powers to carry this object into execution in any way, in any place, and in any form which they might deem the most desirable.
The attempt to find a suitable site in Muthill was unsuccessful, and Crieff was then fixed upon as an eligible situation. Negotiations were entered into with a view to purchase ground; and, at one time, they appeared to be all but completed. But somewhere, the affair miscarried, and the plan was relinquished altogether. The attention of the trustees was next directed to Inverness, where they do not appear to have come to any arrangement; and the result seems to be, that hitherto Mr. Morison's bequest has produced none of those fruits which the testator was so very anxious to realize. The respectability of the gentlemen who are still entrusted with the management of the legacy is such, however, that it will doubtless be a guarantee to the public for its being managed well. It is supposed that the fund cannot be much under £20.000."
New Statistical Account
The trustees finally decided on Crieff as being the most suitable locality for the institution, and accordingly a site was obtained in what was formerly the old cattle market park, and the erection of the building proceeded with in 1859. It was opened in 1861. It is in the old Scottish style. three storeys, and is a neat and commodious building. At present there is but the centre and one wing only erected; but the other wing is to be added in a short time. The institution is a dayschool only: no person living in it except a caretaker. The education afforded comprises all the usual branches of a liberal education, and preparing young men for the universities. There is a headmaster or rector and four male and three female teachers. the fees are heavy considering the large endowment which it has. |

There is a very fine well, which goes by the name of "Cope's Well", and in a bog near it, an old sword was lately found, which certainly confirms the truth of the tradition"

"It is well known that many of these circles once existed in the neighbourhood, though most of them have been removed. There is one, at least part of one, in the park in front of Ferntower House. the largest, and several of the smaller, stones of the circle are still remaining. And the spot is remarkable for more than Druidical rites. It was the scene of a deadly rencontre, which took place in the year 1413 between Patrick Graeme, who had become Earl of Strathearn, by marrying its heiress, a grand-daughter of Robert II, and Sir John Drummond of Concriag, who was then Steward of Strathearn. the Earl was slain by Sir John, and the life of the survivor was embittered ever after."

A very large stone of irregular shape situated on the west end of the Knock of Crieff. and has, from some unknown cause, been split into two unequal parts. The greater is known as the Cradle stone. This stone is said to have been formerly a Rocking Stone, if such has been the case it has been thrown of its balance, as it is now immovable.
"Many granite boulders occur in Strathearn. A considerable number may be seen on the south-east shoulder of the Cnoc: the most remarkable of these is the one known by the name of the Cradle-stone it is nearly spherical, with a circumference approaching to 30 feet. Its weight is about 30 tones. It has been split in two by lightning, and one of the pieces has made a revolution down the hill. It is composed of syenitic granite".

The site of an ancient Castle, a former residence of the Inchbrackie family, there are no remains, but the site can be distinctly traced, the date of its erection is unknown.
"Patrick Graeme of Inchbrakie, Colonel of the Posse Comitatus of Perthshire, and cousin-german to the celebrated James, Marquis of Montrose, was distinguished by the part which he took in that nobleman's fortunes. He held a conspicuous place during all his wars, and appears to have enjoyed a very considerable share of his master's confidence. He is said to have defeated the Duke of Argyle near Dunnoter, and taken possession of Aberdeen. and in return, Cromwell burnt down his house of Inchbrakie, which, in those days, was a stronghold surrounded by a moat, and defended at the entrance by a drawbridge. There are still some traces of this ancient fortification"

A large and commodious mansion three storeys i height together with a large farmsteading a short distance north of the same, the whole is slated and in very good repair, property and residence of Major Graeme.
"There is a curious relic in the family of Inchbrakie, and the history of it is as curious as itself. It is well known that, at no very distant period, there was a war of extermination carried on against those hapless women who were suspected of being witches; and the last who fell a victim in this quarter, is reported to have been one of the name of Catherine McNiven, who was burnt at the north-east shoulder, of the Cnoc of Crieff, at a spot which is called "Kate McNiven's Criag" to this day. All accounts agree in giving credit to the Laird of Inchbrakie, for having excited himself to the utmost to save poor Kate's life, though his exertions proved in vain. When the flames were lighted, and sufferings commenced, she is said to have uttered various predictions against her enemies, - and, turning round to Inchbrakie, to have spit a bluish stone out of her mouth, which she requested him to take and keep, declaring that, so long as it was preserved in the family, his race would never cease to thrive. The stone resembles, and is said to be, an uncut sapphire. It is now set in a gold ring, and is most carefully preserved. The story of "Inchbrakie's Ring" may not be an unfit companion to the celebrated Lockart Lee-Penny of the West."

A large river which flows out of the foot of Loch Earn, and after a course of several miles falls into the River Tay near Abernethy, its banks are invariably low, and after heavy rain it inundates a large extent of country along the margin of its banks. Its principal tributaries are the Ruchil, Lednock, Turret, Pow, Machany and May. |

An old stone bridge of four arches, spanning the River Earn at the southern extremity of the town of Crieff, and on the T.P. [Turnpike] Road leading from Stirling to that town. Repaired by the county.
"The rivers are all furnished with stone bridges, generally built by the voluntary contributions of the country. That of Crieff was the second stone bridge ever thrown over the Earn. It consists of four large arches; and was built out of the vacant stipend of the parish, in the interval between the suppression of Episcopacy in 1690, and the readmission of a Presbyterian minister in 1699. One of the arches - the farthest south - was broken down by the Highlanders in the year 1715, to assist the progress of the royalist forces. It was afterwards rebuilt; but the frame that was used, must have been one which had been employed in constructing some other bridge, - for the new arch is somewhat higher, and not quite in keeping with the remaining arches of the Crieff Bridge."

"There is a Roman Road, or what is reputed to have been one, passing through the lands of the Broich. It is supposed to have connected the encampment at Strageath with that at Dalginoss; and, as a confirmation of the tradition, it is worthy of remark, that when the present road was being made through Burrel Street, a pavement was discovered under ground, composed of common flag stones, bedded close together, in the usual way that Roman roads are laid. and manifestly surrounded with a different sort of earth from that which was found in the immediate neighbourhood." This plan is pointed out as being the site of sect of Justiciary when the Earls of Strath Earn held their courts previous to the erection of the present Court House, all remains of it has been entirely destroyed.
"Previous to the reign of Malcolm Canmore, in the eleventh century, the chief titles of distinction under the King in this country were those of Abthane and Thane. The Abthane of Scotland was invested with a jurisdiction over the whole Kingdom; and the Thane possessed a similar power over a district. But, as Malcolm had lived a considerable time in England, when he fled from the usurper Macbeth, he introduced the English offices and titles into Scotland, after his dislocation to the Scottish Crown: and, subsequently to his time, we find the ambiguated title of Abthane giving way to that of Steward of Scotland, and that of Thane to Steward of a district.
The spot is still pointed out where the Steward of the king's estate of Strathearn was in the habit of holding his court, after the earldom was forfeited to the Crown, in the year 1320 by the treason of its heiress, Joana, daughter of Malise, the last earl. This lady married the English Earl Warrenne and, while the alliance was the means of inducing her to violate her allegiance to Robert I, it proved fatal to all her pretensions as the representative of a noble line of ancestors. She was deprived of her titles, and the forfeiture of her patrimonial possessions gave occasion to the appointment of a steward of Strathearn; - an office which was vested in the house of Drummond; which in course of time became hereditary in the family; and which they continue to enjoy till the abolition of heritable jurisdictions in the year 1740? The spot referred to is a circle of about 12 yards diameter, which is situated in a field belonging to Mr. McLaurin, of the Broich, about half a mile south-east of Crieff, and which, in comparatively modern times, was surrounded with a low wall of earth and stone which is now hardly discernible. It is marked out by " [continued on page 54] |

"Close to this road, and near the field where the stewards of the King's estate of Strathearn were wont to hold their courts, stands a large upright stone, which is understood to have been either a memorial of some Roman event, or the remains of a Druidical circle; and while both suppositions are likely enough, it is impossible to say which should have the preference. It is well known that many of these circles once existed in the neighbourhood, though most of them have been removed for agricultural purposes" New Statistical Account |

The site where Drummond Cross formerly stood is in High Street a little to the west of the Jail. Tradition says it was the Cross of the Burgh of Drummond and that it was set up here about A.D. 1688 where it remained until 1746 when it was taken down and placed in the dungeon of the tolbooth. It now stands close to the Jail. It is about 10 feet in height, its transverse sections being each six inched long. It has a coronet worked out in alto relievo on its centre. |

Standing close to and at the north-west corner of the Jail, to which it is fastened for suport by iron clasps, is an ancient stone cross. It is about ten feet in height its transverse sections being about 6 inches each. It has a coronet worked out on its centre. tradition says that it was the Cross of the Burgh of Drummond and was set up about A.D. [Anno Domini] 1688. It stood in the middle of the street a short dis-tance to the west of where it now stands. It was removed in 1746 and lay in the dungeon of the tolbooth until that building was taken down in 1842. Near the Cross are large iron stocks which, according to tradition, were in existence long before there was a tolbooth in Crieff; but nothing is known of their early history. |

JAIL (on site of) TOLBOOTH [Crieff] |
Jail on site of Tolbooth |
Alexander Monteath, Esqr.
Thomas Soutar, Esqr.
Mr Robert Arnott |
095 |
"In the year 1665 the present tolbooth was erected in Crieff, for the accommodation of the Steward & Court, (which from this point ceased to be held in the open air,) and for the despatch of other public business. Originally the tolbooth contained several apartments, which have been converted to other uses,. Some alteration have doubtless been made; but one part of what once belonged to the tolbooth is now a dwelling house, another is a shop, with one of the dungeons for a coal cellar. This last appears to have been the strongest in the whole building. It is an arched dungeon of small dimensions, which was secured by a strong iron door. It contained the celebrated Crieff cage - a netted iron safe, large enough to contain a man, and covered on the top with a lid of solid metal. And sunk in the ground, under the spot where the cage stood, was what was called the black hole, into which atrocious and desperate offenders were sometimes thrust; though it is believed that this dreaded place was tenanted only on rare occasions. The cage is remembered by several of the present inhabitants of Crieff; and the top, or at least part of the top of it, is still preserved in the store cellar already mentioned.
It now contains a jail in the ground flat, where offenders are occasionally lodged for a night or so; a court-room, where the justices hold a small debt court, on the first Monday of every month; and another apartment above, where a public library is Kept; There is also a spire attached to it, which contains the town clock, and a good bell, of which tradition says that it was that which was rung at Scone when the Kings of Scotland were crowned. If the tale be true the bell must have been recast; for it bears a later inscription, setting forth, that it was gifted in the year 1725 by John Lord Drummond, uncle of James the third Duke of Perth. The bell was recast, perhaps we should have said re-recast, in the year 1821, at the expense of the inhabitants of Crieff. The original inscription was replaced, but an addition was made to it. The motto to the Drummond aims is inserted between the old inscription and the new addition, and the whole is, as nicely as possible, a fac-simile of the old" New Statistical Account
"In 1842 the old tolbooth was taken down, and in 1850 the present building erected on its site. It is a small but substantial structure, having a strong square steeple or spire, which contains the town clock, rising from its centre. Its interior arrangements, etc., are fully described in the second or last paragraph of of the above extracts. |

The Parish Church of Crieff was built in 1787, it is of Gothic structure, has a massive square tower rising from its south centre. It is seated to accommodate 1100 persons, and stands on the site of the Old Church.
"At the demolition of the old parish church (which was an antique Gothic structure, 95 feet long, 18 feet wide and 14 feet in the quire) in the year 1787, about forty gold coins of Robert 1. of Scotland were found deposited in a niche of the wall, about six inches from the floor. Each piece, which was equal in breadth to a modern guinea, and precisely one-fourth of its weight, had the head of this monarch, with the words, "Robertus Rex Scotorum," upon the one side, and St. Andrew with his cross upon the other. These relics of antiquity, it is believed, passed into the possession of some of the neighbouring gentry". New Statistical Account |

CROSS [Crieff] |

095 |
"The Cross of Crieff is certainly a monument of great antiquity. It stood near what was formerly the middle of the town, elevated a step or two on a base of hewn stone, and measuring 6 feet 3 inches in height, nearly 2 feet in width and 6 inches in thickness. It is curiously carved in front, having the form of a cross embossed upon it; and there are traces of what is liKely to have been a motto or inscription; but the characters are so much effaced that it is now altogether impossible to decipher them. Of its early history little seems to be Known, save that it is not the original cross of Crieff. Nobody can tell what or whose it was; but some of the last, or at least of a previous generation remembered that it stood on the neighbouring farm of Trowan; and on the back part of it (which is not carved) the remains of an iron lock or staple are discoverable, to which a ring or collar might have been attached, for the purpose of securing those who were sentenced to the pillory. Another implement of ancient jurisdiction, which was certainly used for this purpose, and which is still preserved, is what is vulgarly termed Chouks, probably the French Jougs. It is a tapering octagonal stone, about 10 feet in length, to which an iron collar was attached, which locked by a padlock. The ancient Crieff Stocks are liKewise preserved". New statistical Account
The place where the Jougs stood cannot be pointed out. The instrument of punishment was preserved for many years, but has unaccountably disappeared, no one can say what has become of it. The Stocks are at the foot of the Drummond Cross. |

"The north and east parts of Crieff are supplied from another, and almost equally abundant source; and the memory of St. Thomas, the tutelary saint of Crieff, has been rescued from oblivion by a market and a well, which still bear his name." New Statistical Account
This well is situated in a garden on the west side of Brown's Lane. Its waters are very seldom, if ever, used now for culinary purposes. A short time ago the feuer on whose property it is wanted to close it up, but was prevented by the authorities of the town. Tradition ascribes great efficacy to its waters in the cure of certain diseases, such as measles, hoopingcough and is yet, though rarely, resorted to for that purpose. It is Kept in a very unclean state. |

"The town of Crieff is situate near the foot of the Grampians, about 17 miles west from Perth, and 22 miles north from Stirling. It is the second in importance in Perthshire. It takes the rank of capital of upper Strathearn; and it stands on the slope of a hill, enjoying a fine southern exposure and commanding a prospect at once sublime and beautiful, Many ancient seats of distinguished families are in the immediate neighbourhood, of which not a few are spacious and elegant; and these circumstances, together with the remarkable salubrity of the atmosphere, have long provenance for Crieff the distinction of being accounted the Montpelier of Scotland. * * *
"This town" , says one who is every way qualified to give an opinion, "is a plan of respectable antiquity", - various notices of it occur in the annals of Scottish history. Justice Courts in Air sat a Crieff at a period of a very distant date. It formed the head-quarters of the army of Montrose more than once during the civil wars of the seventeenth century, and in the two last was of intestine commotion, it was traversed and occupied by the insurgent and loyalist forces. In the year 1715 it was burnt down by the Highlanders, and in all probability it would have undergone the same fate in 1745, if the Duke of Perth had not interposed to preserve it from destruction" New Statistical Account
The old part of the town, around the parish Church, is very irregularly built, and the houses, in general, are in bad repair; but the rest of the town which has been more recently built, the streets etc. are better laid out. James Square and Burrell Square are tqo large and spacious places. Crieff has some good streets, namely, Burrell Street, King Street, Commissioners' Street, Galvelmore Street, Comrie Street, and High Street. This last is the principal street in the town; all the chief shops, some very good ones, being in it. There are eight places of worship in the town, viz., the Parish and West Churches, Free Church, North and South U.P. [United Presbyterian] Churches, Episcopal Church, Roman Catholic and Baptist Chapels. There are five schools besides Morrisons Academy and Taylor's Institution. There are several neat villas in the suburbs, built within the last few years. The following fairs are now held in Crieff:- St. Thomas' Market, 1st Thursday of January, Strowan Market, 3rd Thursday of February, Meikle Thursday, 2nd Thursday of March, Lady Market, 1st Thursday of April, Turret Market, 1st Thursday of June, Duchlage Market, last Thursday of June, Monzievaird Market, 2nd Thursday of July, Monzie Market, 3rd Thursday of August, Michaelmas Market, the Thursday immediately preceding the October Falkirk Tryst. Crieff has a weekly market, on Thursday, held in James Square, in the open air. [Continued on next page] |

The site of a portion of the Roman Road leading from Ardoch to Stormount, there is very little of the Road in the parish of Crieff. The Road, after crossing the River Earn, at Creel Ford, appears to abruptly change its direction from a northerly to an easterly one, and it is traditionally held that at this point there once existed a branch leading through Strath Earn to the camps at Dalginross. This tradition is supported by the circumstance of a pavement composed of stones, bedded together in the usual way the Roman Roads were generally constructed, being dug up, when the present T.P. [Turnpike] road was made through Burrelll Street in Crieff, but there is no one able to point out the site if this branch road. The portion of the Roman Road in the parish of Crieff is entirely destroyed, having been dug up at the time the changing of the course and being up the Pow Water removed. |

Remarks on Name Sheets
In many cases, in this district of the Highlands, it has been deemed advisable to adopt the Anglicised method of spelling - such being commonly used in the district for legal and other purposes.
In some of the Gaelic names also the Provincial method of spelling has been adopted, as no authorities can be obtained for the spelling of such names in correct Gaelic,
