This parish lies in the centre of Strathmore, by far the larger portion of it belongs to the county of Perth; but the original part of the town being in Forfarshire, the parish takes it distinctive name from that county. It is bounded on the north by the parish of Alyth; on the north-west by the parish of Bendochy; from which it is separated by the River Isla; on the north-east by the parish of Meigle; on the south-east by the parish of Kettins in Forfarshire; and on the south-west by the parish of Cargill. The River Isla forms the north-west boundary of the parish. It is supposed to take its name from Yllif, a flood. In the 12th century, Giraldus Cambrensis calls it Hylef. This supposition derives some coroboration from the whole of the haugh-land, which is of considerable extent on the south side of the River, having been formerly liable to be overflooded. Embankments however, have been erected by |

[continued] by the proprietors and unless in very extraordinary seasons are sufficient to prevent the mischief which was occasioned every year to a greater or less degree. The main line to Aberdeen of the Scottish North Eastern Railway runs through the south-eastern extremity of this Parish, and a branch line to Blairgowie runs through the south-western extremity. Two Turnpike Roads run through this Parish one leading to Blairgowie the other to Forfar. The principal Mansion houses are Kinloch, Arthurstone, Belleone, Keithick and Balgersho. The only village in the parish situated North East of the Town. Coupar was once the seat of a rich and flourishing abbey of Cistercian MonKs (ruins of them on 64.13) The only other antiquities are a Law (64.5) Tumulus (64.9) And the site of the Roman Camp (64.13). Though designated of Angus by far the greater part of the town is in the county of Perth. It is situated near the River Isla & is divided by a rivulet into two parts; that part which lies south of this rivulet is all that belongs to Angus. The street are well paved and lighted with Gas. Weekly Markets are held & Annual fair in July. There is no portion of this parish detached, (but a small portion is situated in the County of Forfar) nor is there any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this Parish. |

* This statement must of course be received with caution, but the remarkable view from the Beech Hill (and which is prominently mentioned in the Old Stat Acct [Statistical Account] of the Parish) renders it probable That this position would be occupied as some exploratory mound in connexion with the neighbouring Roman Camp (as at the Roman Camp at Keithick in Brechin Ph [Parish]) and may justify its being written in Roman character.

" The extent of the Abbey buildings may be guessed at but cannot be accurately defined. The only fragment now remaining is in the S.W. [South Western] corner of the churchyard. In 1780, a part of the Abbey consisting of an arch, of beautiful architecture, situated near the centre of the present church yard, was demolished for the purpose of furnishing stones for building the church. The northern wall of the oldest part of the present church rests on part of the foundation of what appears to have been the northern part of the Abbey"

Cupar was once the seat of a rich and flourishing
Abbey of Cistercian Monks founded in 1164 by Malcolm IV.
New S.A. [Statistical Account]
The Abbey in Cupar is said to have been one of three
religious houses which King Malcolm the Maiden founded in
Scotland during the Year 1164. The monks were Cistercians
known also as White Monks. Like all the houses of the
order it was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.

[Continued from Page 31] Agricola in his 7th. expedition. It is nearly a circular square of 24 acres. Here the half of the Roman army are supposed to have encamped, while the other remained at Campmuir, a village nearly two miles south west from this place. On the centre of this Camp, Malcolm IV founded an Abbey for Cistercian Monks, A.D. 1104, and endowed it with large revenues. This house was founded by advice of the Abbott of Melrose, who was of the same order; and it is said the monks, were long remarkable for their piety and exemplary lives. From the pavement and bases of pillars, and subterraneous passages that have been discovered, this abbey appears to have been a house of considerable magnitude. Next to the Scottish Kings, the Hays of Errol were the principal benefactors to the Abbey of Coupar. The latter granted it the lands of Lidderpole, several acres of Arable land on the banks of the Tay, and liberty of fishing on that river. The Monks were allowed free passage with their cattle over all lands belonging to the house of Errol. Gilbert Hay, Constable of Scotland granted them the patronage of the church of Errol, and Chapel of Inchmartin, with all their pertinents and rights. In return for these immunities, the house of Errol claimed the privilege of burial in the Abbey. The last Abbot of Coupar was Donald Campbell of the family of Argyll. ROMAN CAMP (Site of) [Coupar Angus] |
|
|
064 |
The Roman Camp at Cupar Angus appears to have been a Equilateral quadrangle of 400 Yards, fortified by two strong ramparts and large ditches which still remain on the East and South sides and in part on the North side but the West side has been obliterated by the plough. Chalmers Caledonia. P. [Pages] 175. & 148.
At Cupar Angus immediately behind the Churchyard there may yet be seen the Eastern rampart of a large rectangular Camp, which Maitland the Historian described about a Century ago, as being a rectangular square of about 1200 feet fortified with two strong ramparts and a double ditch. Caledonia Romana p. [page] 245.
The remains of a Roman Camp are still to be seen immediately to the East of the Churchyard. The Eastern Rampart is the only one which has not been levelled. New S. Acct. [Statistical Account]
In a foot note at P. [Page] 148. Chalmers remarks " This Camp seems not to have been noticed either by Gordon or by Roy" but the following passage occurs in Roy. p. [page] 133. "On the other hand if we suppose the old intrenchment within which the Abbey of Cupar in Angus is situated, to be a Roman work, and that this was the 'In Medis' of Richard." |
