A large stream which rises on the high ground some distance north of Loch Ordie and after a course of several miles falls into the Lunan Burn a short distance south-east of Laighwood farmsteading. It forms the boundary between the parishes of Clunie and Caputh for some part of its course.
"The Buckny takes its rise from Loch-na-chat, and falling to the south-east between the mountains of Benachally and Duchray forms the Dow loch; thence, increased by the springs of the Dow loch, it thunders down a deep, narrow, rocky den, covered with a wild wood, called the Den of Ryechip, and separating the parishes of Caputh and Clunie, enters the latter in the park of Laighwood, where it unites with the Lunan." A large stream which rises, or issues, from St. Colme's Loch, and after a course of several miles falls into the River Isla.
"The Lunan is by far the most considerable stream in the parish. Collected from different sources in the Grampians, a little to the north of Dunkeld, it proceeds eastward and forms the lochs of Craiglash, of Lows, of Butterstone, of Clunie, and of Drumellie. From this last, it diverts its course to the south-east, and passing by the Roman camp at Craighill in Caputh, it joins the Isla, at a point about 2 miles north-east of the junction of the Isla and the Tay. The course of the Lunan is about 12 miles, and somewhat resembles a bended bow."

The site of an ancient Castle, said to have been erected by, and been the residence of, Bishop Sinclair. Bishop Sinclair, better known as Robert the Bruce's own bishop, is said to have built the choir of the Dunkeld Catherdral in A.D. 1318. it must consequently be presumed that this Castle was erected towards the end of the 13th or the beginning of the 14th Century. There are no existing remains of the building, a small knoll on the south bank of the Buckny Burn, and near that stream's confluence with the Lunan Burn, is pointed out as the place where it stood. |

A large district comprehending portions of several parishes, and having a range of about 14 miles from east to west.
"Stormont a district of Perthshire, bounded on the east by the Ericht, on the south by the Isla and Tay; on the west by the Tay, and on the north by the frontier mountain rampart of the Highlands, from the foot of Strathardle, to a little distance south of the foot of Strath-Tummel. The district measures 14 miles in length from east to west, and about 7 or 8 in mean breadth. It comprehends the greater part of the parishes of Blairgowrie, Kinloch, Clunie, Caputh and Dunkeld, all Lethendy and abouth a third of Bendochy. In an exquisite combination of land, wood and water, lowland expanses, and Highland barriers, luscious dales, romantic glens, and picturesque lochlets, this district, though excelled in its turn for other combinations, or for a higher perfection for some of the scenic elements, excels every other, in even panoramic Perthshire *** Stormont gave, in 1621, the title of Viscount in the peerage of Scotland to the ancestor of the nobleman who, in 1792, was raised jointly to an earldom and to the peerage of the United Kingdom by the title of Earl of Mansfield." On the Castle Hill, south margin of the loch of Clunie and near the parish Church, there are two irregular-shaped piles of stone and cement, which mark the Site of this Castle.
"On the western shore of the lake stands the old Castle Hill, a large green mound, partly artificial, on the top of which are the ruins of a very old building. It stood on the south end of the summit, commanding a distinct view of the neighbourhood, so that it could not be easily surprised. According to tradition it was the Summer Palace and Hunting Seat of Kenneth MacAlpine. If this tradition be correct, it is not unlikely that he formed the Island in the Loch, for the purpose of affording security, in case of the Castle being besieged."

A plain substantial building in the Island of Clunie adjoining the site of St. Catherine's Chapel, - was re-built in 1500 by Bishop Brown of Dunkeld, is now in good repair. Property of the Earl of Airly.
"The Castle on the Island was erected in the beginning of the sixteenth century by George Brown, Bishop of Dunkeld, as one of the Palaces of the See of Dunkeld. It was a private residence of that Bishop, and in which he died. After the Reformation it passed into the hands of the descendants of Bishop Crichton as Commendators, and from them to the Ogilvies, Lord Airlie. It is said to have been the birth place of that famous personage, The Admirable Crichton. As the building is of considerable strength, the walls being nine feet in thichness, it may have been intended by Bishop Brown as a place of defence, and as such it affords a sample of the comfort of ancient times.

A small hill on the South shore of the Loch of Clunie From the level appearance of the district it might be inferred that artificial means were employed to raise this hill to its present height.
It appears to have been a fortified place. Judging from its present appearance, on the south side there are several embankments raised at equal distances from each other. Instead of Corresponding trenches at the bases, the ground projects horizontally from the base of the first slope or inside wall, three or, in some places, more yards, and so on in succession to the outside. These slopes on the South side gradually terminate into three, of large dimensions, at the south west angle, one of these drops off at the nor [north] -west angle, the remaining two slopes continue on the north face, and east, and forms an irregular connection with the slopes on the south side. The summit is level, on the east end there are two small compact heaps of Stone and Cement, partly grown over with earth, the remains of a Castle erected by King Malcolm II. The entrance to a subterraneous passage on the north side, has, for many years, been closed or filled up.
On the western shore of the loch stands the old castle hill, - a large green mound, partly natural and partly artificial, on the top of which are the ruins of a very old building "Some aged

persons still alive," says the Old Statistical Account, "remember to have seen a small aperture, now invisible, at the edge of one of the fragments of the ruins, where if a stone was thrown in, it was heard for some time, as if rolling down a stair-case. From this it seems probable that were a section of the hill to be made, some curious discoveries might be the consequence. The castle-hill is of an elliptical form, extending in length from north to south about 190 yards at its base, and rising about 50 feet above the level of the loch. A green terrace surrounds the hill; and on the north side one terrace rises above another. The area of the summit approaches to an elliptical plain, a little inclined towards the east; of this plain, the longitudinal diameter, from north to south, is about 90 yards, and the transverse about 40. The old castle has stood on the south end of the summit, commanding a distinct view of the neighbourhood, so as not to have been easily taken by surprise. Some vestiges of it still remain; but neither its form nor dimensions can be traced with any degree of precision. The principal fortifications seem to have run along the land side, and the loch and the declivity of the hill appear to have defended it on the east, where it is probable there has been an easy communication with the island by means of boats; so that, in case of the castle being taken, the island might afford a refuge to the besieged. Concerning this piece of antiquity no written record can be found. According to the tradition of the neighbourhood, it was a summer-palace or hunting-seat of Kenneth Macalpin, who conquered the Picts, and united the Scottish and Pictish Kingdoms; and if we suppose this tradition to be well founded, it is not unlikely that it was he who first formed the island in the loch, as a place of retreat in time of danger." The parish Church of Clunie situated at the south east end of the parish. Erected in 1841-2 on the site of the old church. Seated to accommodate upwards of 600.
"The parish church was erected in 1840. It is a most substantial building of the Gothic style of architecture, with a handsome ornamental tower. The church accommodates about 600 people, and was built entirely at the heritor's, who have shown great taste and much liberality in the erection of a place of worship every way so comfortable."

A small island in the loch of Clunie, partly artificial, on which stands a castle in good repair. It is also the site of St. Catherine's Chapel. Property of the Earl of Airly.
"About 200 yards from its western shore is a beautiful little island on which is an old castle, formerly the residence of the Earls of Airlie, built by George Brown, Bishop of Dunkeld in the 16th century. The walls are 9 feet thick; an around the verge of this island are sprinkled a few old ash-trees and planes, which have withstood the storms of some hundred years, yet still continue to vegetate. *** The island itself is plain carpet of green, interspersed with a few flowering shrubs, where the fairies, in the times of superstition, were thought to hold their moonlight assemblies. *** The island itself is mostly artificial, if not altogether so. It must have been formed with great labour, and in some very distant period, as there is neither record nor tradition with respect to its formation. In papers dated 360 years ago, it is termed 'The Island of the Loch of Clunie'. The people in the neighbourhood affirm that it once joined on the south-east side to the mainland; but this is not at all probable, as the land there lies at a very considerable distance, with deep water intervening. Its surface is a circular plain, of about half-an-acre, raised a few feet above the ordinary level of the loch, and surmounted with a strong barrier of stones thrown carelessly together, and sloping into deep water all around, like the frustrum of a cone. That the island has been formed principally by human art seems demonstrable from this, that the ground of which it is composed is evidently factitious; and in digging to the depth of 7 feet, near the centre of the island, nothing like a natural stratum of earth appeared. The foundation of the castle-wall is several feet below the surface of the water, and in all likelihood rests on piles of oak" Fullarton's Gazetteer |

"At the east end of the hill of Gourdie, and two miles northward of Inchtuthill, there is a curious piece of antiquity called Steeds' Stalls, consisting of eight mounds and eight corresponding trenches all of equal lengths, alternate and parallel, and at the south end of every trench there is a circular concave." Playfairs Statl. Acct. [Statistical Account]
"To the east end of the hill of Gourdie, about a mile and a half from Spittalfield, may be seen a relic of antiquity, called the Steeds' Stalls. It Consists of eight mounds, with Corresponding trenches. It is thought that this formed the advanced position of the Caledonian Army, in order that they might watch the movements of the Romans, when they lay encamped at Inchtuthill, about two miles to the southward, on the plain below."
