063 A plain substantial building in the Island of Clunie adjoining the site of St. Catherine's Chapel, - was re-built in 1500 by Bishop Brown of Dunkeld, is now in good repair. Property of the Earl of Airly.
"The Castle on the Island was erected in the beginning of the sixteenth century by George Brown, Bishop of Dunkeld, as one of the Palaces of the See of Dunkeld. It was a private residence of that Bishop, and in which he died. After the Reformation it passed into the hands of the descendants of Bishop Crichton as Commendators, and from them to the Ogilvies, Lord Airlie. It is said to have been the birth place of that famous personage, The Admirable Crichton. As the building is of considerable strength, the walls being nine feet in thichness, it may have been intended by Bishop Brown as a place of defence, and as such it affords a sample of the comfort of ancient times.
