115 A village of considerable size, situated on the banks of the Teith eight miles from Doune and sixteen from Stirling. It is comparatively speaking a modern village, the first of the feus being let about the beginning of the eighteenth century. The houses are almost all two storeys, slated, and in good repair. It has three churches, (Episcopalian, Established, and Free,) three schools. (Established, Free, and Female,) a Bank, Post Office, two Hotels, one Inn and three Public Houses. In 1859 a Gas Work was erected, and now the principal street can be lighted in winter. "Their is an abundant supply of excellent water in different parts of the village, conducted in leaden pipes, the original expense of which was defrayed by Lady Willoughby, who has done much to add to the neatness of the village, and the comfort of its inhabitants."
