The parish of Blackford is in the Presbytery of Auchterarder, and Synod of Perth and Stirling. It is bounded on the north and north east by the parish of Trinity Gask; on the east by Auchterarder; on the South and Southeast by Glendevon; on the South by Tillicoultry, and Alva; The latter being a detached part of the County of Stirling; And on the west by Dunblane, Ardoch and Muthill parishes. A ridge of the Ochils occupies the southern part, which, towards the River Devon, is steep and craggy; but on the north it descends gently to the flat part of the parish which is watered by the Allan. The soil is thin with a gravelly bottom. A great part is marshy; and a moor of considerable extent, now under plantation, occupies the northern part of the district. The vicinity of the Ochils renders the climate moist and unfavourable to vegetation. The parish contains about 21491 Statute Acres. There are no detached parts of this parish; and there are no detached parts of any other parish situated within it. |

From what remains of this pile, it may be inferred that it was a plain building each side measuring about 12 yards Three of the sides - only the track of the eastern one is to be seen - are about 20 feet in height, and are not remarkable for their thickness. It is situated on an eminence in front of Gleneagles, and a short distance from the Mansion house of the same name. Tradition says that the grounds in the immediate vicinity of the Castle, could at pleasure be inundated. |

Stone Coffin (Found here)
Stone Coffin (Found here) |
William McLachlan. Westmuir of Drumfad.
Mr John Donaldson, Tenant. Kirkton |
117 |
Mr McLachlan informs me that he found a number of stones built in the form of a coffin, the top being covered with boulders, at the time he was removing a number of cairns, for the purpose of cultivating a portion of his farm then a moor, he states that there were no less than 21 cairns in a space of about 2 acres, the largest of these (under which the coffin was found) contained upwards of 20 loads of stones, and the smaller ones from 16 to 18 loads, these cairns are also very numerous up on the moorland still in an uncultivated state, and the neighbouring farmers have removed many cairns from off their lands, about 200 yds [yards] to the east of this are the vestiges of 3 circles, they appear like an encampment, but no certain information can be obtained about these, in the vicinity of these dozens of cairns are still visible although overgrown with heather and broom. |

This camp is situated in a stripe of Fir wood, and immediately north of Loaninghead, it is in good preservation, and of an oval shape. It is composed of two trenches, those on the north and south sides being the deepest, on the west there appears to have been the least protection, as there are very slight embanKments, while on the east, the centre is fully 30 feet above the base of the exterior embanKment. There appears to be little doubt as to this being a Roman Camp, and that it was used in connection with the one at Ardoch. |
