Old Statistical Account |
053 ; 064 |
"The name of this Perthshire parish has been written variously. In the parochial registers the following different spellings occur: In 1642 Bendochie; in 1704 Bennathie; in 1731 Bendochie; in 1760 Bendochy. On the communion cups the inscription is Bendothy AD 1786. This last spelling is clearly unwarrantable, and without authority, as far as can be discovered, & apparently has been adopted from a mistaken reading of Bendochy, which is so written in the parish records sometimes as to resemble Bendothy. Bendochie appears the most ancient and correct spelling; but it has been found very difficult to ascertain the true import of the name, arising from the great uncertainty of Gaelic etymology. This parish lies towards the eastern boundary of Perthshire and consists of two great divisions, the highland & lowland and each of these again admits of a very natural subdivision. The lowland part of the parish is divided into two nearly equal parts by the River Ericht. That portion lying west of the Ericht, is separated from the parish of Coupar Angus on the south, by the River Isla, while on the north it is bounded by a detached portion of Blairgowrie Ph. [Parish].

[continued from page 1]
The other part of the lowland division of the parish lying eastward of the Ericht, rises with a gradual ascent, & finally forms a part of the frontier of the Grampians. It is bounded on the East and North, by the parish of Alyth; on the West by Rattray and on the South West by Blairgowrie The Highland division is bisected by a small portion of Blairgowrie Ph. [Parish] It is thus not only widely separated from the lowland division, but consists itself of two distinct parts. The western portion of this part of the parish lies in the angle of confluence between the Ardle & Blackwater The Ardle separates it on the south from the parishes of Blairgowrie and Kinloch; and the Blackwater on the east and north, from the parishes of Blairgowrie and Alyth. On the west it is bounded by the parish of Kirkmichael; & on the north-west by a small dissevered portion of Caputh parish. The other portion of the highland division of the parish, being the estate of Drimmie, lies on the left bank of the Ericht, and is embraced on the south and west, by the parish of Blairgowrie; and on the east and north, by the parishes of Rattray and Alyth.
There is no market-town in the parish, nor even any Village. The Blairgowrie branch of the Scottish North Eastern Railway skirts the south-western extremity of the parish." New Statistical Account.
There are two* portions of this parish detached. there is not any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this parish.

Close to the east side of the dwelling-house of St. Fink there was formerly a Chapel surrounded by a burying ground. The present proprietor removed part of the foundation and trenched the ground for a number of yards around it, and while so doing dug up human bones and urns, he also found two small coins and three bottles of a globular shape.
"There was anciently a chapel at Saint Fink dedicated to that Saint a small part of the foundation of which still remains. It had been surrounded by a burying ground out of which the present proprietor's father dug some human skulls, inclosed between four square stones. Below a cairn he found human bones partially burned, and below these again two rudely sculptured urns inverted with human bones in a state of perfect preservation. Very lately, near the chapel there were discovered some singular looking bottles, nearly globular, likewise inverted."

[Additional quotation under Chapel:]
"There has anciently been a burying ground round the
Chapel. The present proprietor dug out some heads without a body
(each enclosed between 4 square stones, fitted to hold the head); probably
the heads of people who had been slain at a distance in battle.
There was a cairn of stones on his Estate, which he also opened up
& below the stones, among the loose earth, which was black with burnt ashes
he found some human bones, which had undergone fire & upon digging down
into the firm ground below, he found two inverted urns, which had been
placed in pits dug for them, each urn containing human bones; The
urns were large enough to hold the thigh & leg bones & other bones, and
other bones, entire. They were adorned with rude sculpture, but had no inscription."

A fine farm house and offices the property of Lord Wharncliffe G. Kinloch Esqr. & the Revd. Dr. [Reverend Doctor] Barty believes that a Castle or baronical residence had Anciently stood hereabout. This belief is borne out from the Evidence of some Antiquated Sculptured faces on red free stone appearing in the South Gable of one of the officehouses. Dr [Doctor] Barty is inclined to think the Castle stood about the present steading, but Mr. Hunter the farmer thinks on the S.W. [South West] side of the Occn. [Occupation] road on the top of a slight difficulty. |

“In digging the grounds of Mudhall several subterraneous buildings were uncovered, which when cleared of the Ashes and earth with which they were filled, were found to be about 6 ft [feet] wide within walls, 5 ft [feet] deep and 40 ft [feet] long or more, they were built in the sides and paved in the bottom with rough whin stones. In their length they were not straight but a portion of a Circle. It would seem they had been roofed with wood, and covered above with Earth & turf”
Old Stat [Statistical] Account
Every enquiry has been made concerning the above, also of the 2 circles mentioned by Pennant but no information can be gleaned, the history of them is not even known by the Proprietor or any of the oldest inhabitants of the locality except Dr. [Doctor] Barty who supposes them to have been discovered at the Red Brae, from the fact of his brother in Ruthven Ph. [Parish] discovering one of the same description in a bank of the Isla, near his Manse, about 2 years ago. |

[Additional quotations under Site of Weems:]
“2 miles north of Coupar Angus, near a small village
called Coupar Grange, on a gentle eminence, was
lately discovered a repository of the Ashes of sacrifices
which our ancestors were wont to offer up, in honour of
their Deities. It is a large space, of a circular form, fenced
with a wall on either side & paved at bottom with flags.
The walls are 5 feet in height, & built with coarse stone. They
form an outer & inner circle, distant from each other 9 feet.
The diameter of the inner circle is 60 feet; and the area of it is
of a piece with the circumjacent soil. But the space between
the walls is filled with the ashes of wood, particularly oak
& with the bones of various species of animals. The top of the
walls & ashes is near 2 feet below the surface of the field. The
entry is from the N.W. [North West] & about 10 or 12 feet in breadth
Another repository of the same kind & dimension was
some months ago discovered at the distance of 300 paces from the former”
Pennant’s Tour of 1772.
“There is no traces of the
subterranean buildings at
Mudhall described as Pictish
dwellings, and which it is remarked
answered to Tacitus’ description
of the buildings of the Germans.”

A small hillock having the appearance of being formed by art. Its surface has been recently planted with Fir trees, and is the property of Peter Playfair Esqr. of Wester Bendochy. The Rev. Dr. [Reverend Doctor] Barty believes it to be formed by art, and says that it is traditionaly handed down, as having been anciently a seat of justice for the district.
"There are two of those eminences, partly artificial, which are generally denominated Laws. One at Blacklaw, and another near the Bridge of Couttie. Some suppose, that in the olden time, they were seats of justice, whence law, rude & simple as themselves was despensed to the lieges. Other incline to the Oppinion that they were used as telegraphs and derive the name not from the Anglo-saxon hlawe (aggar) but from the Swedish loa or lue hence our low) a flame." New Stat. Acct. given to many hillocks & heaps of earth to be found in all parts of the country
