The parish of Auchtergaven is in the presbytery of Dunkeld, Synod of Perth and Stirling. Patron, the Crown. A small neighbouring parish, called Logiebride, has been annexed to Auchtergaven; but no account can be had of the time when this annexation took place, either from tradition, or from the records of Presbytery. The people residing in the district that belonged to Logiebride parish, however, still continue to bury in the churchyard of Logiebride; and is used as a burying ground by the family of Tullybelton. The parish of Auchtergaven is bounded on the north and north west by the parish of Little Dunkeld, and the detached portion of Methven parish; on the south west and south, by Monzie detached No. 3, Redgorton Detached and the parishes of Monedy, Redgorton, and St. Martins; and on the east, by the parishes of Cargill, and Kinclaven. The detached portion of this parish is situated between the parishes of Methven and Monedy.

"That broad mountain fringe of elevations which runs along the eastern side of the Highlands of Scotland, overlooking the western portions of the Lowlands, and forming the national barrier or boundary between the two great divisions of the Kingdom. The name is so indefinitely applied in popular usage, and has been so obscured by injudicious and mistaken description, as to want the definiteness of meaning requisite to the purposes of distinct topographical writing. The Grampians are usually described as "a chain" of mountains stretching from Dumbarton, or from the hills behind Gareloch opposite Greenock, or from the district of Cowal in Argyleshire to the sea at Stonehaven, or to the interior of Aberdeenshire, or to the eastern exterior of the shores of Elgin and Banff. No definition will include all the mountains which claim the name, and at the same time exclude others to which it is unknown, but one which regards them simply as the mountain-front, some files deep which the Highlands, from their southern continental extremity to the point where their flank is turned by a champaign country east of the Tay, present to the Lowlands of Scotland. But thus defined, or in fact defined in any fashion which shall not limit them to at most two counties, they are far from being in the usual topographical sense of the word "a chain". From Cowal north-eastward to the extremity of Dumbartonshire, they rise up in elevations so utterly independent of one another as to admit long separating bays between, and are of such various forms and heights and modes of construction as to be at least a series of ridges and single elevations, some of the ridges contributing their length, and others contributing merely their breadth, to the continuation. East and north of Loch-Lomond in Stirlingshire, their features are so distinctive and peculiar, and their amassment or congeries so overlooked by the monarch summit of Benlomond, as to have become more extensively and more appropriately known as the Lomond hills, than as part of the Grampians. Along Breadalbane and the whole Highlands of Perthshire, they consist chiefly of lateral ridges running from west to east or from north-west to south-east, entirely separated by long traversing valleys, and occasionally standing far apart on opposite sides of long and not very narrow sheets of water; and they even - as in the instances of Schichallion and Beniglo - include solitary but huge and conspicuous monarch-mountains, which, either by their isolatedness of position, or their remarkable peculiarity of exterior character, possess not one feature of alliance to any of the groups or ridges excepting their occupying the confines of the Highland territory. In the north-west and north of Forfarshire and adjacent parts of Perthshire and Aberdeenshire, they at last assume the character of a chain, or broad mountain elongation, so uniform and distinctive in character that we must strongly regret the non-restriction of the use of the word Grampian exclusively to the district. In Kincardineshire, they fork out into detached courses, and almost lose what is conventionally understood to be a Highland character; and at the part where they are popularly said to stretch to the coast and terminate at the sea, are of so comparatively soft an outline and of so inconsiderable an elevation, that a stranger, who had

had heard of the mountain grandeur of the Grampians, but did not know their locality, might here pass over them without once suspecting that he was within an hundred miles of their vicinity. Northward, or rather westward and north-westward of the low Kincardineshire ranges which loose popular statement frequently represents as the terminating part of "the chain", they consist partly of some anomalous eminences, but mainly of two ridges, one of which hems in the district of Mar on the south-west, and the other separates Aberdeenshire from Banffshire. A mountain district so extensive and chequered, and so varied in feature, cannot be described, with even proximate accuracy, except in a detailed view of its parts. Yet, if merely the main part, or what occupies the space from Loch Lomond to the north of Forfarshire be regarded, the following description will, as a general one, be found correct. "The front of the Grampians towards the Lowlands has, in many places, a gradual and pleasant slope into a champaign country of great extent and fertility; and notwithstanding the forbidding aspect, at first sight, of the mountains themselves, with their covering of heath and rugged rocks, they are intersected in a thousand directions by winding valleys, watered by rivers and brooks of the most limpid water, clad with the richest pastures, sheltered by thriving woods that fringe the lakes, and run on each side of the streams, and are accessible in most places by excellent roads. The valleys which exhibit such a variety of natural beauty, also from a contrast with the ruggedness of the surrounding mountains, and present to the eye the most romantic scenery. The rivers in the deep defiles struggle to find a passage; and often the opposite hills approach so near, that the waters rush with incredible force and deafening noise, in proportion to the height of the fall and the width of the opening. These are commonly called Passes, owing to the difficulty of their passage, before bridges were erected; and we may mention as examples, the Pass of Leney, of Aberfoil, of Killiecrankie and of the Spittal of Glenshee. Beyond these, plains of various extent appear, filled with villages and cultivated fields. In the interstices are numerous expanses of water, connected with rivulets stored with a variety of fish, and covered with wood down to the water-edge. The craggy tops are covered with flocks of sheep; and numerous herds of black cattle are seen browsing on the pastures in the valleys. On the banks of the lakes or rivers is generally the seat of some nobleman or gentleman. The north side of the Grampians is more rugged in its appearance, and the huge masses are seen piled on one another in the most awful magnificence. The height of the Grampian mountains varies from 1400 feet to 3500 feet above the level of the sea; and several of them are elevated still higher. ****
The etymology of the word "Grampians" is so obscure, and - worthless though the topic be - has occasioned so many disputes and so much theorizing, that we may be excused for not rushing among the melee of antiquarians in a vain effort to ascertain it. Nor would it be much wiser to make any attempt at fixing the locality of "the battle of the Grampians, fought between Galgacus and Agricola"

Strathallan, most part of Strathearn, and all the How of Mearns in Kincardineshire. But the strath is more popularly and limitedly regarded as consisting only of what is flanked by the Sidlaw hills, and as extending from Methven in Perthshire to a point a little north-east of Brechin in Forfarshire; and, in this view, it is somewhat uniform in breadth and feature, and belonging principally to Forfarshire, has been succinctly described in our notice of that county. This great district is, in the aggregate, remarkably beautiful and fertile; it contains numerous towns, villages, and elegant mansions; and it is the seat of a great and industrious population. Strathmore gives the title of Earl to the noble family of Lyon; who, before 1450, had the dignity of Baron Glammis, and in 1606 were created Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorn, Viscount Lyon, Baron Tannadice, Sidlaw and Stradighty."

No information can be gathered with regard to these remains of a fort on the summit of Craig Obney - but there can be no doubt that it was built at a very remote period as there is nothing remaining now but a few stones laying in a somewhat circular form.
"On Craigobany, one of the summits of Birnam, there was recently discovered a vitrified fort."
Fullarton's Gazetteer
"The Antiquarian will find, on one of the southern points of Birnam, called Craig Obeny, the remains of a Circular Fort, partially vetrified. The approach to this fort from the south is still traceable; and from its commanding position must have been a place of great strength in the days when gunpowder was unknown."

A square pillar, 50 feet high erected by public subscription to the memory of Robert Nicoll, Poet, and native of the parish of Auchtergaven, On the pedestal of the pillar is the following inscription.
Robert Nicoll
Born 1814. Died 1837.
I have written my heart in my poems.
"Robert Nicoll - This was a young man of great promise cut off in the bloom of life. He was born in the parish in 1814, where his grandfather, father, and mother, and other relations still reside. He was educated at the parochial school under the present teacher; and his first outset in life was in a grocer's shop in Perth. But the bent of his mind being towards literature, he opened a circulating library in Dundee, and distinguished himself as a political writer of the liberal school, and as the author of a volume of poems, chiefly in the Scottish dialect, and descriptive of Scottish manners. The title of one of his songs is "The Fouk o' Ouchergaen". When seized with his last illness, he had the management of a newspaper in Leeds, which in a short time he brought into extensive circulation. He died at Newhaven, near Edinburgh in December 1837. His poetry shows observations, pathos, and right feeling."

A small building erected on the site of the old parish church of Logiebride and used as a vault for the interment of the Tullybelton family, it stands in the centre of the old parish graveyard, which is still in use.
"A small parish named Logiebride, the church of which stood about a mile and a half to the south-west of that of Auchtergaven, on the banks of the Ordie, and where there is still a burying-place, was united to Auchtergaven by an act of the Scottish Parliament, in the year 1618, and was afterwards separated by the Bishop of Dunkeld. In 1647, the heritors and the parishioners petitioned the Presbytery of Dunkeld to have the parishes again united; because there was not adequate stipend for two ministers - because the parish of Logiebride lay within the bosom of that of Auchtergaven, - and because all its inhabitants (not exceeding six score of communicants) "were within a short mile of any of the two said kirks, without any stop or impediment of kirk-way." This matter was referred by the presbytery to the provincial synod of Perth and Stirling, which met at Stirling on the 14th April 1647, when in all probability they were put in the way of being again united, although I cannot state that such was the case, as the documents, whence the above facts are taken, breaks off abruptly. *** Divine service used to be performed at Logiebride for many years after the union, but not within the memory of any one now living. An old man, upwards of eighty years of age, who died lately, remembered the church of Logiebride standing."

New Statistical Account

074 |
An extensive group of buildings varying from three to six stories in height, and in excellent repair the property of Samuel Howard Esqr. of Balthaylock, Work in these mills has been suspended for some time owing to the scarcity of Cotton.
"Under the head of manufactures, the first place is due to Stanley cotton-mills. They are situated between the village and the house of the same name on the margin of the River Tay; and consist of spinning and weaving mills, propelled by seven water wheels, equal to 200 horse power, and affording employment to 1000 people. These works were first built by George Dempster and Co. [Company], in 1785, and continued in their possession till 1800, when they were bought by James Craig and others, who carried them on till 1814, when the works stopped till 1823, when they were bought by the present company, by whom, at vast expense, they have been brought to their present state of magnificence and efficiency. There has recently been some change in the copartnery of the works; and I believe the present firm is "Buchanan and Sons". The fall of water is 16 feet, and the supply being from the Tay, never fails, though sometimes it is in such superabundance as to stop the works. The lade or water course is carried across a hill 150 feet high, by means of a mine 800 feet long, 8 feet high and 10 feet wide, arched and paved throughout. Previous, however, to the construction of this subterranean channel, two others were formed through the same hill at different times, the earlier by John Lord Nairne in 1729, for the purpose of driving a corn-mill; and the latter by Dempster and Co. [Company] in 1785, when the works were first erected. The circumstance of a mine of such extent having been formed at the period referred to, shows the public and enterprising spirit of the nobleman under whose auspices, and at whose expense it was undertaken and executed."

or in any other. By what ever name the lands on which this house is situated may have been called at a remote period, it does not appear, from any document or tradition known concerning it, that the place was named Stanley till some years after 1683, when Margaret, Lady Nairne, succeeded her father Robert, the first Lord. This lady was married to Lord William Murray, fourth son of the Marquis of Atholl by Lady Amelia Sophia Stanley, daughter of James Stanley, Earl of Derby. Tradition says that after the union of the families of Atholl and Nairne, the mansion house and grounds received the name of Stanley, in honour of the Marchioness of Atholl, that being her family name; and, as the place is always spoken of as having been the dowager-house or residence of those members of the family not in immediate possession of the family honours, it is very probable that the above Lady Amelia, the Marchioness, came to reside in it at the death of her lord in 1703 when the name may have been first applied. This house is delightfully situated on the margin of the River Tay, amid magnificent and beautiful scenery, and surrounded with beech and other trees of the most stately growth, evidently of great age."

A large substantial building at the south end of the village of Bankfoot erected in 1811. Seated to accommodate 1200 persons.
"The parish church stands on a sloping bank, at the foot of which is the great road from Perth to Dunkeld. No situation could have been more convenient for the bulk of the population, when it was resorted to by that of Stanley. Since the erection of a church in that village, the population of the eastern extremity of the parish attend divine service there, while that in the western districts still attend the parish church, from which five families are from five to seven miles distant. The great body of the people, however, is within three miles and a half of the church, and many of them much nearer. The present fabric - an oblong building with a tower on its west end - was erected about twenty six years ago. It is a firm substantial edifice, and seated to accomodate nearly 1200."

A handsome dwellinghouse, and offices respectively two and one storey slated and in good repair
"The manse was built ten years ago, and is a good plain house, situated a quarter of a mile westward from the church. The stipend consists of £73 money, 40 bolls of barley, and 81 bolls of meal. There are two glebes, one at Auchtergaven, and one at Logiebride; and the two together will measure fully ten imperial acres; they would let for about £20; the one is rather more than a mile distant from the other. A portion of the "Muir of Thorn", and also of another muir near Tullybelton, are said to belong to the minister of Auchtergaven. But as during the last thirty years the parish has been served by four assistants and successors to the late incumbent, who all that time lived at a distance from the parish, this land has not been claimed. The two first assistants and successors were soon removed to other parishes; the third died in 1830; and the present incumbent has not hitherto deemed it prudent to attempt the establishment of his right to these "muirs", although he has not abandoned the intention of doing so. There is no grass glebe unless it be these muirs."
New Statistical Account
The Minister's right to the "Muirs" mentioned in the foregoing extract still remains unestablished. It is not even known in what part of these places his claim is situated. |

The site of the old residence of the Nairne family, its position is marked by two or three old plane trees.
"The principal residence of this ancient family was situated at Loak, in this parish; and the House of Nairne is still spoken of as one of the finest seats of the Scottish nobility. After the forfeited property was purchased by the Duke of Atholl, this residence was demolished; and the only vestige of it which now remains is part of the orchard, with a green mound planted, which terminated one of the avenues; but there are persons still alive, who, amid the levellings of the plough and harrow, can point out the various localities, the favourite walks of the "last Lady Mary", her sylvan bower, the clear pebble well, of which the stream still flows, the old thorn tree, and the bowling green in which Lord Nairne marshalled his clan before they marched to join the Prince at Perth."
New Statistical Acct [Account]
The date of the erection of this building is not known, but its demolition was caused by fire, not by the Duke of Athole, as stated in the foregoing extract. |

The site of a large Mansion said to have had 365 windows, it was never occupied; It was erected to supply the place of the old mansion which had previously been destroyed by fire, and at the attainture of Lord Nairne for his participation in the rebellion of 1745, the house was demolished by the Duke of Atholl, who became possessor of the estate by purchase. There is nothing on the ground to indicate its site, neither is it known to a certainty, the precise date at which its erection commenced, but it is generally supposed to have been near the end of the 17th. or the beginning of the 18th. century.
"The Old House of Nairne having been consumed by fire, a new mansion was erected at great expense, nor was it completely finished at the Rebellion of 1745. Sixty masons were employed three years in building it; and were, every Saturday evening during all that time, treated at his Lordship's expense, in a public house at Loak, each with a large oat cake, a salt herring, and a pint of ale, equal to four English pints. Many who saw the foundation of this house laid, lived to see it taken down to the ground. It was sold, and the materials carried off; and it is said that the clock and weathercock on the spire of the hospital at Perth were originally on the house of Nairne."
