"Ardoch was erected into a parish quoad omnia by a decreet from the Court of Session of date 21st February 1855 in virtue of Act of Parliament of Scotland 1707 entitled Act for the Plantation of Kirks and valuation of Teinds, conformable to the 19th Act of Parliament 1698"
Extract from Church Register.
The parish of Ardoch was formed by disjoining certain portions from the neighbouring parishes of Muthill, Blackford and Dunblane and is a separate independent parish in every respect excepting the support of the poor; which is conducted in the same way by the three above mentioned parishes, as previous to the erection of Ardoch into a separate parish. The site of an ancient cairn on the district of Corry Our, it was composed of stones, the whole of which have been removed to build stone fences.
"In a cairn, about a mile to the westward, no less than 182 feet in length, 30 feet in a sloping height, and 45 feet in breadth at the base, there was found a Stone Coffin, in which there was a Skeleton 7 feet long, the cairn lay from north to South, and the coffin was nearly in the middle of it, with the head to the east. Most of the Stones have been carried away to inclose the neighbouring farms; but the coffin, with a few large Stones around it, has, by order of Sir William Stirling, been preserved" Old Statistical Account
"Many stone coffins have been found at different times in digging about the Camps or near them; and the skeletons contained in them have been of an uncommon size. About a mile west from the camps, a Stone coffin was found containing a skeleton seven feet long. A mile and a half distant in the muir of Ochill, another was found of the same length, in Cairn Wochill. These have generally been in cairns or heaps of Stones, which may be accounted for, from a practice in former days of throwing a stone upon the respected dead, or upon any place remarkable, in passing by. So among the Highlanders there is still a saying that of one shall do a favour to another, a "stone shall be added to his cairn;" - that is, his grave shall be remembered and respected." New Statistical Account.
On the hill above the moor" says Gordon "are two great heaps of stones; the one called Carnwhochal; the other Carnlee; in the former, the quantity of stones exceeds belief; and I found by mensuration, the whole heap to be about 182 feet in length, 30 in sloping height, and 45 in breadth, at the bottom."
These two Cairns are the British monument of the Caledonians, who fell in the celebrated conflict. Every circumstance concur to evidence that this moor was the bloody scene, where so many Caledonians perished, for their country & freedom." Chambers' Caledonia - should be Chalmers
"There are also upon the muir two huge cairns - one called Cairn Wochel, and the other Cairn Lee. The first is the largest, and according to Gordon, is 182 feet in length, by 45 in breadth, and 30 in sloping height. The name seems Pictish, and akin to the celebrated Penvahel;- we have no doubt the Cairn Wochel implies the cairns at the walls, from being in the vicinity of the Roman ... [continued] |

... Roman Camps. In Richard's Map, an altar is represented a little north of Lindum; it is probable Cairn Wochel is that altar, and that Cairn Lee is also a monument of Druidical superstition. In such cairns are generally found urns, or cist-vaen (stone chests), containing ashes of the dead, and skeletons in stone coffins. Accordingly, on opening Cairn Wochel, a stone coffin was found, wherein was a skeleton seven feet long".

The Little Camp
The Little Camp
The Little Camp |
Mr William McNicol
Shearer's Antiquities of Strathearn
Mr John Eadie |
117 |
West of the great camp, and upon somewhat higher ground, is the little camp, situated half within and half without the former, the public road passing through the north east corner. It is oblong being 1910 by 1340 feet, and would hold upwards of 1200 men - that is more than a legion with its auxiliaries; and was probably constructed to hold that division of the army with which Agricola Gnacius after dividing his forces. It has evidently had six gates, three of which are still to be seen, covered by straight traverses. The south side, and a considerable portion of the west have been ploughed down. One cirucumstance is very remarkable in the small camp, namely, that the Romans did not level that part of the entrenchments of the great camp included within the area of the little one, which they must have found so troublesome, even from its obliguiity, as to have entirely deranged the interior order and regularity of their encampment. Shearers Antiquities of Strathearn.
The part of the Camp without the Great Camp, is entirely destroyed, is not traceable, neither is its position known by anyone in the locality, the portion on which the Black Hill is situated is in a tolerebly entire state, as also two fragments joining its north-east angle. |

The Great Camp |
Mr William McNicol, Gunnocks Braco.
Shearer's Antiquities of Strathearn
New Statistical Account |
117 |
"To the nort-west of the procestrium is the great camp, which is oblong but not altogether a parallelogram, from which we see the Romans, at this period, occasionally yielded to the ground; the longest sides, however, being only a little deflected, would not hinder the regular distribution of the troops. The public road enters by the South gate, and in so doing has cut down one half of the esscalment which covered it - the other half remains to this day. The north gate is a little to the east of the egress of the highway, covered by a straight traverse, and another gate on the west side is similarly protected. Part of this entrenchment on the south end of the east side has been ploughed down; but the north gate on that side is defended not only by a square Redoubt with the lines, but also by a clavicle; from which it may be inferred that a weak legion was quartered in that part of the camp. There are two or three small ponds on the entrenchments, and the whole ground would not now be considered favourable for the encampment of an army, being rather of a moressy nature; but in the first century it might have been in a very different state. The mean length of the great camp is 2800 and its mean breadth 1950 feet; according to the polybean system it would hold between 25,000 and 26,000 men - General Roy says it is very probable that it was here Agricola encamped with his army, before dividing it into three bodies, as above mentions; and also in the following year, before marching against Galgacus"
Shearer's Antiquities of Strathearn.
With a few exceptions this Camp is now entirely destroyed, the only portion existing is on the east side where the lampart is in a very good state of preservation there is, however, several places where its lines can be distinctly traced |

The southern extremity of a ridge of somewhat elevated ground which at this place, is about eighty feet in height, the south and west sides sloping at about an angle of 50°, and covered with wood. It is believed to have been a Roman Outpost or post of observation in connexion with the Camp at Ardoch, from which it is distant about ½ mile. There are the remains of intrenchments and ramparts, in a curved form, parallel to each other, and terminating in the natural slope of the hill to the south and west, enclosing a small level space within. Tradition says that there is a subterranean passage between this and the Roman Station at Ardoch. |

All living authorities disagree with the statement made in the Old and New Statistical Accounts with regard to this hill, all asserting and pointing out Chapel Hill as being without the limits of the Camp, instead of at the Praetorium, A Chapel appears to have existed on the Southern ramparts of Lindum. the walls of which are remembered by many persons about the neighbourhood, these persons are of opinion that it was from this chapel, and not from the supposed Chapel at the Praetorium that this hill took its name. Chapel Hill is well known in the locality but no one points out the spot where the Praetorium stands as being it. |

"There are two Roman camps in the parish; one at Strageath, and another at Ardoch **** The camp at Ardoch, as being the most complete of any in Scotland, or perhaps in Great Britain, is entitled to a more particular description. Its situation gave it many advantages; being on the N.W. [North West] side of a deep moss, that runs a long way eastward. On the west side, it is partly defended by the steep banks of the water of Knaick; which bank rises perpendicularly between 40 and 50 feet. The north and east sides were most exposed; and there, we find, very particular care was taken to secure them. The ground on the east is pretty regular, and descends by a gentle slope from the lines of fortification, which, on that side, consist of five rows of ditches, perfectly entire, and running parallel to one another. These altogether are about 55 yards in breadth. On the north side there an equal number of lines and ditches, but 20 yards broader than the former. On the west, besides the steep precipices above mentioned, it was defended by at least two ditches. One is still visible; the other have probably been filled up, in making the great military road from Stirling to the North. The side of the camp, lying to the southward, exhibits to the antiquary a less pleasing prospect. Here the peasants' rugged hand has laid in ruins a great part of the lines; so that it may be with propriety said, in the words of a Latin poet, "farn seges est, abi Troja suit." However, from the remains yet to be traced, it appears there were also 3 or 4 ditches, which, with its natural advantages, rendered the side as strong and as secure as any of the others. The 4 entries crossing the lines, at right angles, are still distinctly to be seen.
The area of the camp, is an oblong of a 140 yards, by 125 within the lines. The General's Quarter rises above the level of the camp, but is not in the centre. It is a regular square, each side being exactly 20 yards. At present, it exhibits evident marks of having been inclosed with a stone wall, and contains the foundations of a house 10 yards ... |

... yards by 7. That a place of worship has been erected here, is not improbable, as it has obtained the name of Chapel Hill from time immemorial.
Besides the camp above mentioned, so completely fortified both by nature and art, (and which is supposed to have been formed by Agricola, for the Roman legions under his command) there are two encampments adjoining to it, and having communication with one another, containing above 230 acres of ground. These seem to have been defended by only a single ditch and rampart, and probably were intended for the cavalry and auxiliaries. Here was room for all the forces, that fought under Agricola near the Grampian mountains, notwithstanding what has been said by Mr. Gordon, in his Hinerarium Septentrionale, to the contrary; who probably imagined, as others have done since, that the whole ground at Ardoch, fortified by the Romans, lay within the small camp above mentioned.
It has already been observed, that the two large encampments had a communication with one another; and, that there was a subterraneous passage from the small one, under the bed of the river, is more than probable, from a circumstance now to be mentioned. There was a hole near the side of the praetorium, that went in a sloping direction for many fathoms; in which it was generally believed, treasures, as well as Roman antiquities, might be found. In order to ascertain this fact, a man, who had been condemned by the Cairn court of a neighbouring lord, upon obtaining a pardon, agreed to be let down by a rope into the hole. He at first brought up with him, from a great depth, Roman spears, helmets, fragments of bridle, and several other articles; but upon being let down a second time, was killed by foul air. No attempts have been made since that time. The articles, above mentioned, lay at the house of Ardoch for many years, but were all carried off, by some of the soldiers in the Duke of Argyll's army, in 1715, after the battle of Sheriffmuir, and could never afterwards be recovered. The mouth of the hole was covered up will a millstone, by an old gentleman, who lived at the house of Ardoch, while the family were in Russia, about the year 1720, to prevent hares from running into it, when pursued by his dogs; and as earth, to a considerable depth, was laid over the millstone, the place cannot now be found, although diligent search has been made for it. |

When the Ardoch Family returned to the Country, the Camp was used as pasture ground for Cattle; and by Sir William Stirling, the present proprietor, has been enclosed with a high stone wall, that it may never again suffer by a ploughshare. He has also prohibited the tenants from ploughing up, or otherwise demolishing, any part of the remaining lines or ramparts round the two larger Camps. He has now an urn, perfectly entire, which was dug up near the west Side of the Praetorium, or general's quarters, containing ashes, and some small pieces of human sKull.
Old Statistical Account.
"All antiquaries who have written on the subject of Roman Camps in Scotland have alluded to those at Ardoch. These Camps deserve this distinction, as the most entire in this country, nay, perhaps in Britain; but we believe they would not have been half So much noticed, were it not for the mystery about them, as to whether they were Castra Stativa of Agricola, when on this Side of Bodotria sKirmishing with the Caledonian leader Galgaeus, or the abode of Some other Roman or foreign foe. It is not our intention in noticing these Camps, to dispute with the many great authorities, from Richard Cirencester, Hector Boetius &c., down to a Lieutenant-Colonel Miller, who have published on this subject, but we shall adhere to the life of Agricola, written by his son-in-law, as the only common source to which any historian can go for information, regarding the monuments and transactions of that great commander, who came to subject the hardy tribes of Caledonia to the Roman Sway.
And certainly from that life we are so much entitled to fix upon Ardoch, and its neighbourhood, as the scenes where Agricola abode and repulsed Galgaeus, previous to the decisive battle apud Montem Grampium ... |

... Grampium, as others are, to fix upon the neighbourhood of Loch Orr, in fife, Blairgowrie, or Battle Dykes, north of Forar or Reithie, near Brechin. We consider the camps at Ardoch and the other places of that nature, connected with them, to have been the abodes of the Romans, in the year 82, when they came to invade the inhospitable regions of the north. The whole space which was occupied by the Romans in their encampment, at Ardoch, consists of four departments, viz. the Station, the procestium, the great Camp, and the less. The station is a freeman out Camp situated upon an eminence close by the public road from Stirling to Crieff. The position was happily chosen for defence; on all sides the camp was protected; on the west by a defence from the banks of the Knaik rising fifty feet above the surface of the water, and having two fossae between it and the bank; on the south, by a deep morass that rose a considerable way eastward, with its two fossae also; and on the east and north, by deep entrenchments of five ditches, and six ramparts parallel to the Station; all of which were very sufficient to guard those within, and to keep off besiegers. The area of the station within the entrenchments may still be seen, and is of an oblong form, 420 feet by 375, with its four sides nearly facing the cardinal points of the compass. The place of the Praetorium or general's quarter is a regular space of 50 feet in the side, in the rear or part farthest distant from the enemy's but is marked of rather irregularly - for on inspection, it is not found to be exactly in the middle between the gates, nor parallel with those of the Station. It is, however, elevated above the level of the ground , and appears to have been enclosed by a stone wall. Within this, also, there are the foundations of a building 30 feet by 27, which gives some probability to the conjecture that there was a place of worship once there, which is still called Chapel Hill. Of the four gates which belonged to the Roman Station three ... |

... three only now can be distinguished, the fourth being scarcely traceable. Fronting the Praetorium is the Praetorium gate, crossing the north lines in an oblique direction.
Opposite to that gate, and behind the Praetorium where the Decuman gate should be, is a road leading out of the Camp, which may have been the Decuman; and onwards to the right and left of the Praetorium, are to be Seen the two, which were Called the principal gates, as being at the ends of the principal Street which crossed the Camp in front of the Praetorium. Upon the Polybean System of castramentation, this fort would accommodate 1200 men. Immediately adjacent to the north Side of the Station, is the Procestrium or pro castrum (for a camp) or an addition to the other, as probably used by Agricola for containing his men and baggage, when he thought of dividing his army into three parts, in order to watch the movements of Galgacus, and fight from the neighbouring hills. This procestrium seems to have been strongly fortified, and a subsequent work the the other, for part of the area of the great camp was included in it, but its entrenchments are levelled by the plough, while the corner of the former is yet visible. Its South gate it also to be seen as connecting it with the station, and this again with the fragments of another gate on the north side. It was of an oblong shape, consisting of 1060 feet by 900, and is capable of accommodating 4000 men. North-west of the procestrium is the great camp - so styled from its size. Its mean length is 2800 feet, and its mean breadth 1950; it would, therefore, according to the Polybean system, hold about 2600 men, and this was what made General Roy to believe that it was this camp that Agricola held his great army, previous to his dividing it into three bodies, in order to meet and conquer the Caledonians. The form of this Camp is oblong, but ... |

... but not so regular as that of a paralleogram - a fact which Seems to prove that the Romans did not stick close to mathematical nicety where the nature of the ground did not well permit. The public road to the north, via Crieff, known of old as the military road, enters by its South gate, and so has cut down one half of the epaulment which Covered its but the other half still remains rather entire. The north gate is a little east of the road, covered by a straight traverse, and another gate on the west is in the Same way protected. On the east side, towards the north, there is a gate that has been defended, not only by a square redoubt within the lines, but also by a clavicle - from which Circumstance, it may be supposed that a weak legion was there quartered. On the west Side of the great Camp is a Smaller one of an oblong shape. Its size is 1910 by 1340 feet, and it would afford accommodation for 1200 men. To the antiquary, this one is very interesting, especially in tracing the itenera of Agricola. It is evidently higher in position than the other Camps - one half of it lies within the other Camp, which is adjacent to it - and the fact of it being left so very entire, would incline us to fix upon it, as the abode of the third part of the Roman army that remained with their leader, whilst the others were encamped at Strageath, and Dalgin Ross, for the entireness of the Camp proves that it was the last occupied, and that, Agricola left it in great haste with his third division, to aid the 9th legion, who were then almost subdued, in the Camp of Dalgin Ross, on the plains of Comrie. As to these being the Camps of Agricola, we shall only refer to Tacitus. We take up the history of Agricola while at the isthmus between estuaries of the Forth and Clyde, and trace his steps onwards to the Grampians; and, from the plain reading of the latin text, throughout the fourth year, it appears he was employed there in erecting forts to secure the conquests which he had made on the other side. |

Side. This was the case unless we adopt the very improbable notion that the two Rivers named Glota and Bodotria were on the borders, or were the boundaries between Scotland and England, and that the Taus is the Solway &c - which view would overturn all our conceptions of the Roman movements, and would be making Taus of Tacitus not that beautiful river which separates Fife from Angus and Perthshire; the Glota not the Clyde, and Mons Grampius not that grand mountain range so well known to every Scotchman, but some little hill in the South. -- -- -- -- This boundary, says Tactus, would have been Sufficient to limit the Roman Conquests in Britain had it been consistent with the bravery of their army or the glory of their name. But as it was not we then read of their crossing the Frith of Clyde. Some say at Dumbarton, the following year, with the new nations spoken of as lying to the west, or opposite the Coast of Ireland, he had many Successful encounters, and having Subdued them, he placed forts with a view to future operations, an afterwards probably returned to the isthmus from which he went, there to winter and make ready for his Caledonian invasion in the Spring. But before leaving this part of the history, we would advert to a difficulty as to the third year's undertakings. Agricola is said to have continued his devastations through the several nations to the mouth of the Tay. This being the case, it is evident he must have returned to the isthmus, where he erected his forts, for his undertaking in the fourth and fifth years were of Course posterior to that in the third, and in this view, we require not to correct the historian's wards, as some have done, by saying, that by the Tay he meant the Solway Frith, or the Tweed, or the Tyne. In the fifth year, it is said that Agricola placed forces ... |

... forces towards the west, on this side of the Clyde, which showed that he was meditating an invasion against the Caledonians. That invasion he undertook in the summer of the following year, but as to his route from the isthmus towards the Camp in which the 9th legion was attacked in the night, and afterwards to the Grampian Hills where the decisive battle took place we are left to conjecture. Next he encamps at Ardoch eight miles and a half from the former station, which agrees with the calculations of Ptolemy and Richard, and granting all this, the remaining part of Agricola's history, as far as the parish of Muthill is concerned, becomes plain. We have, only in accordance with others, to state, that Agricola being apprized that his enemy surpassed him in numbers, and in the knowledge of the country, and that the[y] meant to attack him in divers bands, divided his army into three parts, and marched, to prevent their surrounding him. One part encamped at Dealgin Ross, the other at Strageath, and the other remained with Agricola, in a small oblong camp at Ardoch. On this hypothesis, it was the 9th legion which was assailed by the Caledonians, during night, and had their guards slain in the trenches of Dealgin Ross, and this may have been owing to the information which the Caledonians might receive of the 9th Legion as being the weakest **. During the time that they were engaged in the Camp, Agricola heard from his spies, in what direction the great body of the Caledonian army lay, and as it seems to have been between him and the camp, so he hastened forward and commanded the lightest of his foot and cavalry to charge them, whilst yet engaged in the rear, and the whole army presently after to give a mighty shout. This attack of Agricola and his men upon the rear-guard of the Caledonians must have been in a small glen, in the west end of the parish, two miles south of Dalgin Ross, and so the design of the shout would be, that the Romans in the camp of Dealgin Ross might hear and know that those in the small camp of Ardoch had come to their assistance. This may be inferred from the Roman Soldiers regaining courage ... |

... courage and beating off their enemy to such a degree, that, had not the woods and marshes served for shelter to the fugitives, the war had been concluded by this visctory. We therefore fix upon Blair-in-roan as the place of the decisive battle between Galgacus and Agricola at this time. Of this we have presumptive evidence - the name itself, as signifying the spotted battle field - a stream which runs through the glen, and is one of the sources of the Machony, named Bai-na-blair, signifying the stream of the battle field - besides the several upright stones in that quarter, still called by the country people the Roman Stones - an in addition to all this, the discovery a few years ago, of a very large urn filled with the ashes of the dead and near by it, several stone coffins, covered over with a heap of stones or a cairn. The other Camp or Station of the Romans was at Strageath, upon the banks of the Earn, near Innerpeffary. Its original work appears to have been of small dimensions, and the intended additions to it, seem never to have been fully executed. All its entrenchments are now levelled by the plough.
New Statistical Account
The Station Lindum is in nearly the same state at present as is represented in the New Statistical Account. The place where the Stone Coffin containing a skeleton seven feet long, about a mile west from the camps, cannot be pointed out. All known places where Urns and Stone Coffins have been found are marked on the traces, with the requisite note. |

A large blue whinstone lying on the surface, fifteen feet long, three wide in the middle, and four thick; one end tapers off to a point, the other end is two feet wide. It very much resembles a boat in shape from which circumstance, no doubt, the name is derived. There is no tradition in the neighbourhood respecting it. |

A small circular mound or knoll which was formerly covered with wood, but all the trees have been cut down except a row round its edge. Its centre is only about four feet higher than the general surface surrounding it, it does not, consequently admit of shading, the slop being so slight. It is evidently artificial, and is believed in the neighbourhood to be a mote or justice seat of former times. At its eastern edge is a large stone standing upright, 5 feet high, 2 wide and one in thickness, on which is an inscription but so much effaced that it is impossible to make out the meaning.
It is not Druidical, but is very possibly coeavl with the object on which it sits, this however, is a mere conjecture, as there is no one to give a decided opinion regarding its origin, neither is there any tradition associated with it. There is little doubt to its being an antiquity. |
