Situated in the Counties of Perth and Forfar -
The name of this parish and village has remained without material change from the earliest period to which it can be traced; and in the very oldest documents in which it occurs the spelling is exactly the same as at present. In the parochial records & other documents, it sometimes appears in the forms of Alicht, Elicht, Elith etc but these variations are Evidently accidental, & can only be regarded as instances of the loose orthography of Ancient times. The name is probably derived from the Gaelic 'aileadh', a Slope or Ascent ('dh' in the Gaelic language being pronounced like the English 'th') & seems to refer to the slope on which the Old Church & the more ancient part of the Village are Situated. The parish is bounded on the North, by Glenisla; on the East by the parishes of Airlie and Ruthven in Forfarshire; by the parish of Meigle on the South-West; Coupar Angus on the South; and on the west by the parishes of Bendochy, Blairgowrie, and detached portions of Caputh & Rattray. It is separated from the parishes of Airlie & Ruthven by the River Isla. |

Several piles of loose stones, situated about ¾ of a mile East of the farmhouse of Kingseat, varying in size being from 10 to about 25 feet in diameter and 2 to 4 in height, no tradition in the locality as to their origin, further than being supposed to mark the graves of warriors. They are similar in appearance to those in the parishes of Lochlee and Menmuir in Forfarshire, near the same are the remains of several which are clearly traceable (& shewn on traces. they are generally supposed by the inhabitants to have been Pictish dwellings, Duncan McLachlan Upper Blackhall, an intelligent old inhabitant is of the opinion that they are anterior to the settlement of the Picts in Scotland or North Britain, having heard the term or names in the Gaelic of "Pecht" or "Pechtish" and "Cruinich", and from this supposing them to have been two distinct races, the latter deriving this name from their dwelling in circular abodes, the Gaelic Cruin signifying round. This would seem to apply more directly to the remains shown on Plans 42.10 trace 3 & 42.11 trace 1. To what particular sect or tribe the "Cruinich" belonged cannot be ascertained. |

not perhaps cognizant of all
the particulars about the Black

... the inner one, and seems to be constructed entirely of earth as its surface consists of a fine Sward of grass. No ditches or mounds appear on the north and west sides, as the hill here are steep and of difficult access. On the outside of the fort and immediately at the west end, there was a very deep well or small pond which is now filled up with stones (see Trace 4) The people of the locality believe this to have been the well for the supply of water to the fort.
"Barry Hill, the supposed place of Vanora's confinement merits some description. It is one of the Grampians 1¼ miles N.E. [North East] of Alyth it commands an extensive view of Strathmore and of Several remarkable hills in the Sidla range &c. History informs us that the Picts kept possession of Dun-barry and the adjacent country, from a remote period to the 9th Century, or later, but the precise dates of their settlement in those parts, and of their expulsion, cannot be ascertained. The hill itself is of an oval form. Its summit was levelled into an area 180 feet long and 72 or 74 broad. Around the area a mound of earth was raised from 6 to 8 feet high, and 10 to 12 broad at top. On this mound a wall of freestone was built without any cement whatever. The foundation of the wall was composed of rough granite, and still remains. It is of the same breadth with the summit of the mound, but the height of the wall cannot be known. Gordon's estimate of it is extremely erroneous. Among the ruins there are several pieces of vitrified stones: but these vitrifications must have been accidental, as they are few an inconsiderable. Along the west and north borders of the Area, barracks or huts, were built of dry stones, and Sufficiently sheltered by the mound and wall; but no structures of this sort can be traced in the south part of this Area. As the north and west sides of the hill are steep and of difficult access, there was no need of an outer ditch in those quarters; But, towards the south and east, where the hill gently slops there is a ditch 10ft [feet] broad and 12 to 16 feet below the foundation of the wall. At the south east extremity of the fort, a narrow bridge was raised over the ditch, 18 feet long and 2 road, except towards each end, where the breadth was increased. It was composed of stones laid together, without much art, and vitrified above and below and on both sides; so that the whole mass was firmly cemented, that an opening was left below, after the process was finished ... |

In a field situated on the farm of "Balloch" & south eastern side of "Loyal Hill" a Cave or Weem was discovered containing black mould or ashes. John Powrie Shangie who saw this place opened about 65 years ago, pointed out the place (indicated by cross on trace) to be as near as he can recollect, the situation of the Cave or Weem discovered at that period, Captain The Hon. [Honourable] William Ogilvy of Loyal the proprietor on whose ground it was found can furnish no information; little is known of it in the parish, but by the authorities quoted.
"In a ploughed field on the S. [South] side of Loyal, an artificial cavity has been lately discovered. It is the form of a ditch about 6ft [feet] deep & four broad, faced upon both sides with stones, & covered with large broad ones on the top. The tenant who occupies the ground uncovered part of it which he found full of Ashes. Whether these are the ashes of Sacrifices offered by our ancestors to their deities, or of those warriors who may have fallen in the defence or attack of the fortification on Barry Hill, to which it is contiguous, is matter of conjecture. The etremities of this Cavern have not yet been explored." Old Stat [Statistical] Account. This agrees with the description given by John Powrie.
These are considered to have been Ancient British habitations. JB |

... finished, is doubtful, on the upper part of the bridge a stratum of gravel was laid to render, the [path] smooth and easy. This is the sole part of the fort intentionally vitrified. A few yards distant [from] the ditch, there is an outer wall, the foundation of which is about 8 feet lower than the Summit [of the] mound. The approach to the fort is from the N.E. [North East] along the verge of a precipice and the [entrance] was secured by a bulwark of Stone, the ruins of which are extant. There is no vestige of a wall within the fort; -- westward, between the bases of the mound and the precipice, there was a deep pond or lake, recently filled up by the [tenants] in that neighbourhood. "About a ¼ of a mile eastwards the diclivity of the hill (Barry Hill) there are some remains of another oval fort, of less extent than the first consisting of a strong wall and ditch. Tradition says, that there was a Subterraneous communication between these forts, which is not improbable, from the account now given, it would appear first, that both were constructed before the Romans introduced the art of building with lime and other cement. 2nd That the Picts, and ancient Scots had Stone edifices which Macpherson is not inclined to admit. 3rd That they sometimes vitrified particular parts of their forts, to render [them all] the more durable" "Old Stat [Statistical] Account for Meigle Ph. "On the barony of Alyth on the South Side of Bary Hill, there are Several rude obelisks or Standing Stones, probably intended to commemorate Some long forgotten conflict. They are referred by tradition to the time of King Robert the Bruce, but there can be no doubt that they belong to a much more remote period. The only remains of this old building now to be seen, is a wall on the brink of the River Isla, its stands about 14 or 15 feet high and is grown over with ivy, about 10 links from the South end under the foundation, is a hole extending horizontally in for about 3 or 4 yards which a number of inhabitants suppose to be a Cave or the mouth of a subterraneous passage that had communicated with the fort on Barry Hill, But Mr. Lamond and a number of respectable inhabitants believe it to be nothing more than what had been a Sewer, or probably might have been a secret entrance from the cliff into the Castle, which would seem more likely. The hole is arched above and is built with dry stone.

same utensils have been also found within

continued |
|
053 |
"The old church which is now unroofed and will soon be entirely demolished is a building of considerable, though uncertain antiquity, having been in a ruinous state for upwards of two hundres years before it was disused. It was probably dedicated at its erection to St. Molonoch or St. Malachi, Bishop, as the original fair of the Village is still called St. Maloquis apparently a corruption of the latter name, & coincides with the day consecrated to that Saint in the Old Scottish Callender. St, Molonoch was a disciple of St. Brandon & is mentioned in Keith's Catalogue of Bishops as having flourished or deceased A.D. 629. New Stat. [Statistical] Acct [Account] |

Immediately at the N.W. [North West] angle of the grave yard at the place marked a. on the trace, is where the Rev. [Reverend] Mr. Ramsay says the Chapel or Church of St. Ninian had stood. "There was also a chapel dedicated to to St. Ninian, described as Situated "infra coemeteriam ecclesiae parochialis de Alyth" The Vicarage of Alyth & chaplainry of St. Ninian were unquestionably distinct offices, although they might sometimes be held by the same person. It seems most probable that the chaplainry was a provision for the clergyman who discharged the duties of Curate of the parish in the absence of the incumbent. The lands of Balwhyme in the neighbourhood of Alyth formed part of the provision of the Chaplain. In a deed of cognition & insestment dated 1670 the chapel is said to have been Situated on the north side of the Kirkyard: the site is still pointed out." New Stat. [Statistical] Acct. [Account] |

This Castle occupied the site of the present farmsteading of Balloch, no traces of it now remains, but several of the hewn stones belonging to it, occupy a place in the buildings of the present offices. little or nothing of it is known by the inhabitants. John Powrie, Shangie pointed out the situation as marked by cross on trace, where he recollects seeing a portion of the wall standing about 60 years ago. Captain The Hon [Honourable] W Ogilvy of Loyal and Thomas Mckenzie Hill Street Alyth corroborates the same. It is said to have been occupied by a family of the name Rollo as the following quotation from the Old Stat. [Statistical] Account of Ruthven tends to show. "Tradition says that the Church of Ruthven was erected by the Earl of Crawford, proprietor of the barony of Inverquiech for the accommodation of his tenants, several of them having been killed by the Rollos of Balloch in going to their parish Church of Alyth"
John Shangie knows the name of Rollo in connexion with Balloch; and I am informed by Mr. Japp of Alyth that the Rollo arms have been found carved on a stone of the Old Bridge at Alyth. [signed] JB LCol. [Lieutenant Colonel] |

A little N.E. [Noth East] from the house is a small planted knoll or eminence known by the name of the Law Knowe. Mr. Bruce says the only tradition connected with it, is that it had been used as a place where courts of justice were held in feudal times. The appearance is natural, and ridges are distinctly seen, shewing that it has been under cultivation before being planted with wood. |
