South-West from the town there is a hill called Castle-law. Tradition says there was a fort upon
top of it; it probably served for one of those watch towers on which the Picts used to Kindle
fires, on sudden invasions, insurrections, or the approach of the enemy; these signals were comunicated
from tower to tower till the whole country was alarmed and flew to arms, These
fires were attended with the blowing of horns which was the signal for war. From this hill
there is a most beautiful and extensive prospect. Old Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] 11.

The Castle Law about three quarters of a mile South-west from the village is a Steep picted
fine grassy hill rising to the height of about 600 feet. On its Summit from which there
is a most delightful view of Strathearn and the Carse of Gowrie are the vestiges of a
stony imperfect vitrified fort. The principal enclosure Seems to have been surrounded
by a rude mound of irregular Stones many of which are burnt or partially fused.
The form is somewhat like the section of Jargonella pear cut longitudenally. the greatest
diameter from east to west being 16 yards and from north to south 24. Two indistinctly
visible outworks lower down the hill are also a winding terrace walk seem to have been
connected with it. It might have perhaps been designed to guard the pass into Abernethy Glen
which it over looks or to watch the Roman Station below. Supposing it to have been a signal post on
office for which the site and construction of other hillforts point as well adapted it could
communicate with the vitrified forts on the Law Hill Seven miles from Dundee; with those
