Revd [Reverend] John Clarke Abernethy
110 [Situation] In the central portion of the parish Various opinions have been given to the derivations of Abernethy, the most probable of which, I think is that it took its name from a Small river the "Nethy" , which runs thro' [through] the east end of the Town. Many have assay'd to prove that Abernethy was at one time a much larger than at present, be this as it may the Abernethy of the present day is a poor looking, very uneqularly built place composed principally of detached houses thrown together, apparently, without due regard having been paid to the forms of streets, or to Comfort or commodioueness of the buildings themselves, The population in 1851 was 800, at the present it is supposed to be 900, Abernethy has three commodious Churches, the Established, Secession & Free, also two good Schools, It has also a Town House in which meet the Bailie and Council men who preside over the affairs of the Burgh, and in which is Kept the burg records & Charters &c, This town was created a burg of Barony 23rd. August 1476 as Shewn by a Charter from Archibald Earl of Angus Lord of Abernethy &c & is Such still under Lord Douglas. Abernethy is supposed to be one of the most ancient Towns in Scotland & has honor of having been the residence of the Pictish Kings as well as being the then episcopal See of Scotland before its translation to St. Andrews in the 9th. Century, This town is fairly Supplied with good water & well lighted with Gas, the Edinburgh Perth & Dundee railway passes almost thro' [through] it. affording Speedy Means of transition for the Surrounding farm produce & also for the produce of the adjacent Tay & Earn Salmon Fisheries by which & Weaving, the majority of the Inhabitants live.
