THE ROUND TOWER [Abernethy Churchyard] [Continued]
of a light green Urn having a row of Carving round the neck. In looking at this tower from the ground near it, one is apt to Suppose that it has been built in different periods, as the first dozen rows of Stones appear very old, weather beaten considerably corroded by the effects of time, above these the stones present a contrast, having the appearance of centuries of less exposure than the others. Could the first part of the building have been the mausoleum only ? & when Bells came to be used after the Christian era, might not the addition have been made for suspending the Bell ? & still later it may have been Converted into a Clock Tower. This Tower still fills the two latter of The Town Clock & the Belfry. -
