"It appears from the public records of Scotland, that in 1485, the name of this parish was Abirfull; and in 1505, Abirfule. The modern name of the parish is Aberfoyle - sometimes written Aberfoil. It is suggested by the confluence of a stream of Water with the Forth, about a quarter of a mile to the east of the Church; which stream is called in Gaelic the Poll. It is bounded on the North, by the parish of Callander; on the West by part of the parish of Buchanan; on the South by the parish of Drymen; and on the East by the parish of Port of Monteith. The parish is situated in the Stewartry of Monteith, and on the souhtern verge of Perthshire. The general aspect of the country is marked by features very different from those which characterize the district to the East & South. Here the extensive plain and grassy eminence cease, & the rugged precipice and lofty mountain commence. There are however only two mountains in this parish worthy of particular notice

The literal description of this name is unquestionably the
confluence of the Poll (or muddy stagnant Burn) with the Forth -
Aber-phuill gen [genitive] Foyle therefore seems incorrect by the

"Vizt: Ben Venue and Ben Chochan. Both of these mountains command extensive views to the North, West and East. The celebrated Scenery of the Trosachs lies immediately beneath them; and from their summits can be distinctly traced "the windings of the Chase" so beautifully described by the late Sir W. Scott in his Lady of the Lake. The valleys in the vicinity of these mountains are of small extent. There are 5 lakes in the parish of considerable extent Loch Katrine, Loch Chon, Loch Achray, & Loch Drunkie. The River Forth has its rise at the western extremity of this parish at a place called Sgiath an Iubhair."

The only antiquities in the parish are the ruins of a Castle on an Island in Loch Chon (6 in [inch] plan 122) and a Circle of Stones termed a "Clachan" (on plan 130.1) There is a Small Village in the Ph. [Parish] (plan 130.1) at which there is an Inn, Post Office &c. |

Dr. Graham in his sketches of Perthshire states in describing the scenery of Loch Ard, "that the first opening of the lower lake from the east is uncommonly picturesque & this spot in ancient times formed the barrier between the low country and the almost inaccessible tract that lies to the westward. It is called the Pass of Aberfoil. Previous to the formation of the road which now stretches along the banks of the lake, a few men stationed in this pass, could have repulsed an army in attempting to advance further into the Highlands: In the time of the commonwealth, a party of Cromwell's Army, attempting to penetrate into the upper country by this pass, was repulsed with considerable loss, by the natives headed by the Earl of Glencairn, and Graham of Duchray." |

"A district occupying the south-west part of Perthshire. Excepting the parish of Balquihidder, which anciently belonged to the stewartry of Strathern, the district comprehends all the lands west of the Ochil hills in Perthshire, whose waters discharge themselves into the Forth. The vale of the Teith, whence the name is derived, occupies the central & larger part, but is flanked on the one side by the Perthshire section of the upper vale of the Forth, & on the other side by the lower part of the vale of the Allan. The entire district is about 28 miles in extreme length from east to west, & 15 in extreme breadth; & includes the whole of the parishes of Callander, Aberfoil, Port of Monteith, Kilmadock, Kincardine, & Lecropt, and part of the parishes of Kippen, Dunblane, and Logie. Large tracts of it are eminently rich in the finest elements of landscape. Previous to the abolition of hereditary jurisdictions, Monteith was a separate or independent stewartry. The district anciently gave the title of Earl to a branch of the noble family of Graham." Fullarton's Gazetteer. |

A small circle of stones with a large one in the centre. The Rev. [Reverend] Mr. Stewart and Mr. Jolly, believes it to be a relic of Druidism. The stones which its consists of are not very large, and are mostly sunk into the ground, or covered with earth corresponding to the description given in the Old Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] which is as follows - "On a rising ground in the neighbourhood of the Manse, and facing the south, there is a circle of stones which there is room to believe, to be a relic of Druidism. It consists of 10 large stones placed circularly with a large one in the middle. The seem to have stood originally on one end, but have now fallen, and are partly sunk into the earth. From this circumstance it seems to be that the Highlanders, when speaking of the Kirk of Aberfoyle, uniformly make use of the term Clachan i.e. the circle of stones." |

Clachan - a circle of Stones Gaelic Dicy. [Dictionary]
Mr. Stewart informs me that this
object has long been considered an
artificial, religious, remain -
otherwise it does not evidence much
the character of a Stone Circle - there
are numerous scattered boulders in
the immediate vicinity, and where the
rocks outcrops, which detract from
the probability of this being artificial.
