"Hawkshaw was formerly and for upwards of 1000 years the residence of the family
of Porteous allowed to have been the Chief of the name and the armorial bearing
of that family has for a motto "Let the Hawk Shaw" Near the dwelling house are
found vestiges of a Chapel and burial ground where the sculptured head of
a monk was found some time ago." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Peeblesshire page 64.

"Furder down upon the head of a burn on the south side of Tweed stands
the old house of Hawkshaw belonging to Porteous from a numerous race
of ancestors Chiefs of that name," Pennecuik's Description of Tweeddale page [ - ].
