[Situation] In the S.E [South East] Portion of the County
A Parish in the County of Peebles bounded on the North by Stobo & Peebles, on the by Peebles & Selkirkshire, on the South by Megget and on the West by Drummulzier and Stobo - Its greatest breadth, from the Tweed ¾ of a Mile above the Lyne water on the North to the highest Source of Manor water on the South is 8¾ Miles - its breadth from 1 mile to 5¾ Miles, And its Superficial Area is estimated at about 18,110 Scotch Acres -
The Tweed forms the boundary for 3½ miles on the North & North West - The Manor Water. rises Near the Southern boundary and persuing a Northerly Course, traverses the Parish for 6½ miles nearly along the Middle and then runs windingly 2¾ Miles near or along the eastern boundery until it joins the Tweed, Numerous other tributaries of the Tweed have there rise in this Parish, about one Eighth is under Cultivation, the remainder is sheep pasturage, the hills rise to a Considerable elevation and are well Stocked with game - There are two Very ancient and Remarkable Camps in the Parish, one on the farm of Cademuir and the other on Chester's Hill, beside these forts [Continued on page 4] |

three other fortified entrenchments, of smaller dimensions are visible upon Houndhill, Woodhouse and Rigg Knoll of Hall Manor, along with these there still remain the ruins of Several Fortified houses or Tower of Defence, often used as Beacon Towers during the border Wars, a remarkable road called the "Theif's Road" passes thro' [through] this Parish, many antiquities has been brought to light during the present Century "The Standingstones, Fount Stone, Giants Grave, Macduff's Castle" It is difficult to asertain the date of the erection of the Parish Church, however it bears the trace of being very Ancient. Earl Wemyss of Gosford Castle Haddingtonshire is the Patron of the living -

A Stone about 3 feet high, of a circular form And hollowed on the top, presenting the form of a basin - This is Said to be the font which Stood in the Chapel of St Gordian from whence it was removed to it's present position to mark the Spot where three lairds' lands met - It is Still in a tolerable State of preservation And is regarded with a Kind of reverence by the inhabitants of the district. |

At the Spot here indicated the ground presents many irregularities and tracks of what would appear to have been buildings, which apparently were of some extent. There are no persons alive in this locality who can give any information about it - excepting within Several of their memories - there were the remains of Several buildings at this place and the Stones of which, have from time to time been removed for different purposes. It is generally recognised as the place where the Kirk Stood, being at the entrance to Newholm Hope. |

"The Church Stood on Newholmhope near
the head of the glen, until the middle of the Seventeenth
Century, when it was removed to its Present site, in
the lower district of the Parish. It was Known as,
'Saint Gordians Kirk', or 'Saint Gorghain's Chapel',
from its dedication Either to St Gordian who was beheaded
at Rome under Julian the Apostate, About the year
362 or to St Gorgon, a eunuch of the Imperial
Palace, who was martyred under Dioclesian about
the year 300. The feast of Saints Gordian and
Epimachus, Martyrs, was Kept by the Scottish
Church on the tenth of May; that of St Gorgon, Martyr,
on the ninth of September - Of the Ancient Church in
the year 1715, nothing was to be seen but the rubbish
