005 | [Situation] About 13½ chains NNW [North Nprth West] of the parish church A spring Well of excellent Water a few yards distance from the W [West] Bank of the Lyne, (And Nearly opposite Rumbling Tam,) this Well water is not used by Any of the Villagers in Consequence of they having to cross the Lyne, ere they could get it It is not properly Known why it was called St. Mungo's Well but it is supposed that the Monastery belonging to St Mungo had some property or portion of land (adjacent to the Village) attached to it, but whether the Well was On that portion of land or not, is not known at present |
