002 [Situation] In the N E [North East] portion of the village of Linton

This is a village close to the County boundary, and distant 13 miles from Edinburgh. It consists of rows of Cottages on each side of the road. These Cottages vary in height and all have garden ground attached; and are generally the property of the occupiers, being built on feus from the Estate of Newhall. The inhabitants are employed in the Coal pits and lime works in the neighbourhood In the Village is a Free Church; there is also a school; and besides the Ramsay Inn is one public house. To the east of the Village on the North Esk is assigned the scene of the "Gentle Shepherd", 'Habbie's Howe'.
