014 | [Situation] In the E [Eastern] portion of the Co [County] Peebles A flourishing little town in a valley at the mouth of the Leithen, that owes its name to its situation, It is composed of houses one two and three storeys high. There are four woolen manufactories one of which is solely devoted to fancy tartans the rest are flannel and blanket manufactories. The public buildings are the Town Hall, Parish Church, Free Church, U P. [United Presbyterian] Church, Indept [Independent] Chapel, Parish School, Free Church School, three Banks, two Inns, and one Post office. The present population is about 1,000 the chief part of which are employed at the factories, the rest are agricultural labourers etc. In the summer season a great many gentry frequent this place (which has become famous for its Mineral Springs.) |
