James Spence Esqr. [Esquire] Stromness
106 A supposed Picts House & which bears externally the form of a truncated cone & the height of which is about 14 feet and the circumference at the base about 300ft., internally it consists of loose stones, and rubbish; but whether like other supposed Picts Houses throughout the country, it is surrounded with one, or two, circular walls, cells, or apartments, is as yet unknown as there has been no digging sufficiently deep, to discover the mystery
Its outside is covered with a thick sward of fine grass and on a superficial view has much the appearance of a large "tumulies"
On the summit stands a small square tower erected as a land-mark
It stands isolated from any other antiquity on a declivity commanding a view of "Maeshowe" and the "Standing Stones" of Stromness. A little to the west is situated the farmhouse of "Howe" which is named after "The Howe" and is about 1/2 mile West of the Bridge of Waith
