..before the foundation, had a church appropriate to the Town in the parish of St Ola, which is well known stood in Bridge Street Lane, near to Kirkwall bay. It is thus supposed that Kirkwall derived its name. Kirkiovog Bay - a name afterwards corrupted or converted into Kirkwall. The body of the people residing in Kirkwall is composed of tradesmen, boatmen, servants, and day laborers.
Peace in his Hand Book says"This the chief town of the County is most conveniently situated almost in the centre of the islands, at the head of a fine land locked bay, which forms an excellent harbour for vessels of the largest tonnage. "Kirkevagg" signifying Church Bay, was derived from a church which at one time stood there. The time when the town was first founded has not been ascertained; but it undoubtedly is a place of great antiquity, and probably enjoyed burghal privileges under the Norse rule, when possibly the population numbered only a few hundreds. This much is certain that King James the III of Scotland in 1476, granted it a Royal Charter which was confirmed when he visited the islands in 1536 by Charles II and the [continued on next page] |

the Scottish Parliament in 1670. it is governed by a Town Council, consisting of a Provost, two bailies, a dean of Guild and eight Councillors, and in it are held the meetings of the Commissioners of Supply, and all other county meetings. Along with Wick, Tain, Dingwall and Dornoch and Cromarty, it sends a member to parliament." The population of the Burgh of Kirkwall according to the census of 1861 was 3,379. Many of the houses have their gables toward the street, which gives it a foreign appearance, and some of them seem, from their inscriptions, to be verging on antiquity.
Kirkwall is both a Municipal and Parliamentary Borough, and the boundaries are conterminus.
"The Burgh Boundaries were extended for Municipal purposes to the the parliamentary Boundaries in terms of the Act 20 & 21 Vict. C. 70."

To the east of the Bishop's palace, and equidistant with it from the Cathedral is the ruins of the Earl's Palace, a monument of the tyranny and oppression to which the inhabitants of these Northern islands were subjected by the notorious Earl Patrick Stewart.
This mansion forms three sides of an oblong square, and has even in its ruins the air of an elegant yet massive structure, uniting as was usual in these residences of feudal princes the character of a palace, and a Castle. A great banqueting hall, communicating with several large ... (continued on next page) |

large round or projecting turret rooms and having at either end an immense chimney testifies the ancient northern hospitality of the Earls of Orkney, and communicates almost in the modern fashion, with a gallery or withdrawing room of considerable dimensions, and having like the hall, its projecting turrets. The lordly hall itself is lighted by a fine Gothic window of shafted stone at one end, and is entered by a spacious and elegant staircase, consisting of three flights of stone steps. The exterior ornaments and proportions of thee ancient building are also very handsome. The richly decorated circular turrets, ornamenting the different corners and angles of the building with the fine pilasters at the principal entrance are quite in keeping with the architecture of the sixteenth century, the time when the palace was built. Altogether it is a fit monument of the magnificence and splendour of those barons who (Continued on next page) |

who assumed the power and status of petty sovereigns".Peace's Hand Book to the Orkney Islands.
Sir Walter Scot tin his novel of "The Pirate" says, "The palace is impressive, as exhibiting vestiges of the mutations both in Church and State which have affected Orkney, as well as countries more exposed to such convulsions. Several parts of these ruinous buildings might be selected (under suitable modifications) as the model of a Gothic mansion, provided Architects would be contented rather to imitate what is really beautiful to that species of building, than to make a medley of the caprices of the order, confounding the military ecclesiastical, and domestic styles of all ages at random, with additional fantasies and combinations of their own device, all formed out of the builder's brain." |

The ruins of this ancient though elegant structure, still exist in the neighbourhood of the massive and venerable pile which Norwegian devotion dedicated to Saint Magnus. Mr Peace in his "Hand Book to the Orkney Isles" says, "In the immediate neighbourhood of of the Cathedral are the remains of the Bishop's Palace. It is a very old building and the time of its erection has not been ascertained. It was in this place in 1263, after the Battle of Largs, that Haco, King of Denmark took up his residence, and shortly afterwards died and in one of its upper chambers lay in state. state. A very small portion only of the edifice is all that now remains of the structure as it was in the days
"When Norse and danish galleys plied
Their oars within the Firth of Clyde
When floated Haco's banner trim,
Above Norwegian warriors grim
Savage of heart and large of limb."
The principal part now standing was built by Bishop Reid in 1540, and consists of a tower circular without but square within, on the outside of the north wall of which is a stone statue of himself. It is called the Mass Tower, and from the top of it may be had a pretty extensive view of the town and neighbouring Country, but the stair is so much decayed that it is extremely difficult if not dangerous to make the ascent. It is generally supposed that Earl Patrick joined his Palace by a wall to the circular wall of this one, thereby forming the whole into a hollow square. |

"Jarl Ronald laid the foundation of the Cathedral in the year 1137 and dedicated it to his uncle, St Magnus, the patron saint of Orkney, who, by his cousin was assassinated in the island of Eigleshay some 20 years before. But though founded in the earlier portion of the eleventh, it was not extended to its present proportions until the middle of the fifteenth century, when the latest additions were made to it by Bishop Reid. It is built almost entirely of Red Sandstone, and measures about 226 feet in length from east to west by 56 feet in width, and the cross or transept 92 feet in length from north to south by 28 feet in width. from the floor to thee roof is 71 feet and to the top of the present spire 140 feet. Th oldest part of the building is the cross, including the 4 massif Gothic pillars 24 feet in circumference, spanned by beautifully formed arches upon which rests the central spire of the edifice. The Gothic window measures 36 feet in height and 13 feet in breadth, and is composed of four arches separated by three stone mullions or astrigals - the central space, above which is a circle, subdivided into twelve divisions, resembling somewhat as many leaves of a rose, hence the local name "The Rose Window". Nearer hand is Shapinshay and Gairsay once the island home of the famous Swein and his bold followers." Peace's Hand Book to the Orkney Islands.

The field is on the west side of the Scapa Road, and its ancient name is Warbuster (now obsolete). From the small portion of the foundations of the circular tower which has been laid open, and from the few openings which have been made in the surroundings the original structure seems to have been on a similar plan to the one at Scapa. The configuration of the ground round the Brough of Warbuster (see previous remark) still bears evident trace of the large circle with [continued on next page] |
