The parish of St. Andrews Lhanbryd is in the Presbytery of Elgin, Synod of Moray. It is bounded on the east by the parish of Urquhart on the south east by the parish of Speymouth; on the south west by the parish of Rothes; on the east by the parish of Elgin and on the north by the parishes of Spynie and Drainie. A small portion of this parish on the north side of the River Lossie containing Kings Mills and Newmill Manufactory is included in the Parliamentary and Municipal Burgh of Elgin. There are no detached portions of this parish, nor are there any detached portions of another parish situated within it. |

The Inverness and Perth Junction Railway Company was incorporated in 1861, for promoting a line of Railway from Forres by way of Grantown to Perth. The works were completed and the line opened throughout in 1863. This company afterwards amalgamated with the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction; the Inverness and Nairn and the Ross-shire Companies under the designation of the Highland Railway Company, and the entire system (with the exception the Morayshire and Findhorn Lines) from Keith to Inverness and Bonar Bridge and from Forres to Perth, is now known as the Highland Railway. |

The late esteemed John Brander, on the hypothesis that the coal of Brora, at
the distance of 100 miles directly opposite on the other side of the firth,
might be found about the same depth on his estate here, bored 97 feet
through a bed of sandstone uniformly continuous, with the exception of a
very thin layer of limestone at two or three different depths. This perforation ... -- Shewn
is Kept open and clearly indicated by a weighty stone put over it.
The Lossie, having now by courtesy the title of river, though but a brook in ...... -- written & described
its ordinary state, being in this parish the drain of about 600 square miles,
its two conjoining brooks, the Lochty and the Lenoch winding through their ..... -- not in this Ph [Parish]
own dun hills. In the excavation of the canal for the drain of the Loch of .......... -- shewn as Speynie canal
Spynie, there were six varieties of shells dug up, of which oysters and
cockles bore the larger proportion. In a new course lately formed for the

which its component streamlets are united, there was turned out a boulder
of more than a ton weight of blue argillaceous limestone, having its

on the south, disjoined by an intervening skirt of the parish of Elgin, to ................-- portion of Elgin Ph [parish] called Teind Land
which it pertains. It was originally the moor where the cattle were collected..........-- and as it is not perambulated as such
for drawing past of the teinds of both parishes, before they were ........................ -- make a report of your enquiry respecting
converted into money, from which it retains the name of Teinland; .......................-- them & attach it to these extracts
and on account of its distance from Elgin, the inhabitants have in general ...........-- not shewn
ranked themselves in this parish. There is one mineral spring in the ....................-- cannot now be found
Teinland of a strong chalybeate kind. There are 3 lakes on the
confines of the parish, that of Spynie, from 4 to 6 feet of water on a deep
rich mould, inviting its proprietors to drain off its shallow water.
The neighbouring Loch of Cots, originally a part of Spynie, at first a ....................-- not in this parish
strait of the ocean, is on the same level, and offers equal encouragement to
drain off its waters. Lochnabee in the S. E. [south east] corner of the parish, is about .. -- shewn. Lochnabo
3 miles in circumference, and has an island covered with wood. ........................... -- shewn
The Earl of Fife has the whole of what was the parish of Lhanbryd,
and the ancient-barony of Kilmalemnock, in St. [Saint] Andrew's; The Earl of........-- Cannot be shewn

the lands in the vicinity of Elgin, and John Innes Esq. writer to the
Signet, has Dunkinty towards the east, and a small farm was in the ..... -- There was a mansion of this name, its site cannot now be
last generation, given by Gordon of Cairnfield, for the support of the .... -- got not Known in this Ph [Parish]
Episcopal Chapel in Elgin. The only language of the parish is
Scots. The names of the places, in general, are of that language, such as
Hornhead, Hairstones, Hollow-wood, and Cockstown. ........................... -- Written Scotstonhill, Hairstones Hallowood, and Coxton.
Although the people of Teinland are at liberty to choose any church ..... -- This is not at present the case
most convenient, they are bound to mill in their own parish of Elgin. .... -- See reply to this in page 5
The following is taken from Leslie's Survey of the Province of Moray
In this parish, the chapel of Kilnalemnock was probably ........................ -- Site cannot be found
an apartment consecrated within the castle of Forresterseat ................ -- Site cannot be found
and upon its demolition would naturally fall into St. Andrews:
and the chapel of Inchbroom must have been disposed of in the
same manner upon the suppression of the Priory of Urquhart .............. -- Site shewn in the Ph [Parish] of Urquhart
upon which it is supposed to have depended. It does not appear
that there ever was a burial place but at the last of these chapels.
In 1780 the parish was formed into its present shape by the annexation
of St. Andrews to Lhanbryd. The former burying grounds were
continued, but the parochial church is erected in a situation more
commodious for the people in general, than the old churches were
for their respective congregations. In 1794 the schools which were
at St. [Saint] Andrews and Lhanbryd were, by the proprietors of the parishes
and the presbytery, conjoined into one parochial school and the buil- ....... -- shewn
ding erected contiguous to the church
In replying to remarks on Antiquities etc, in the parish;
the Superintendent of Examinors will supply all the local
information he can obtain, and state what steps he has
taken to obtain such information.

With regard to the "Teinland"
the result of any enquiry regarding
them is that in the beginning
of last Century the land in
question was a moor, whereon
the cattle were collected for
drawing the teinds of the Phs [Parishes]
of St Andrews Lhanbryd & Elgin
previous to their being Converted
into money. about the middle
of Said Century the boundaries
of these parishes were defined
when, a Small portion of
"Teinland" was given to the
Ph [Parish] of Elgin the Remainder given
to the Ph [Parish] of St Andrews Lhanbryd
in which Ph [Parish] it has Since been
assessed. There is no detached ............................. -- There are no detached parts of this Parish -J.D.
