This is the ruin of a church, quite roofless, but with the walls entire, situated in the Altyre woods, and near the Altyre Burn, and about one mile north of Altyre house. In the chartulary of Moray mention is made of Altyre chapel, having been used in 1230; and the present church is supposed to have been built on the site of the Roman catholic Chapel. The present ruin ceased to be used for religious purposes about 1660, after Altyre was joined to Rafford parish. The present is the ruin of a presbyterian church. It is on the property of Sir W.G. Cumming |

|
011.02 |
In an arable field about half a mile to the west of (Thornhill) there was found about 1848, a stone coffin with human remains. It contained an urn of clay rudely ornamented. In this coffin alone were found ornaments of a jetblack substance resembling canal coal through which appear to have passed cords; the whole fixed to a ring 2½ inches in diameter. The appearance of the bones and ornaments seemed to indicate that the grave had been that of a female of rank. Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |

This name is applied to a Stone Situated on the north of the road leading to Burghead, and about One half Mile from the Town of Forres. "The Stone or pillar is hard grey Sandstone twenty three feet Above the ground and Said to be Twelve feet more under it. The breadth at the base is four feet; thicKness about fifteen inches, and Covered over with figures of Men on foot and horsebacK. of birds And Animals with runic Knots and Circles Cut in alto-relievo.
Its precise purpose is a matter of dispute, but it is Supposed to have been Set up between the tenth and twelfth Centuries, to Commemorate the victory obtained by the Danish Army over Malcolm II in 1008 in which the King was wounded and Carried off the field. About the year 1812 several human SKeletons Are Said to have been dug up within a few yards of it, which would Coroborate this view of its MarKing a battle field" See "Morayshire Described" pages 269 and 270. In the same field and about 180 yards to the West of this Pillar a Stone Coffin & Barrel of a Gun were dug up by the present Tenant in 1864, and in the adjoining field to the North West pieces Of Sword blads, Buckles, & pieces of Tartan were got when Cultivating it about the year 1828

This Castle (the Tower of which alone remains Standing.) Stands a little to the South of Burgie house. It is Six stories in height build of Red Sandstone And though uninhabited yet it is in tolerably good repair. More especially the walls which are quite modern in appearance The roofS of the most of the RoomS are arched over with stones. And in some also the floorS are Covered with large flagS of fireStone There is a Dungeon the floor of which is Sunk a little below the ground In the roof of this Dungeon are two bars of iron each about two feet in length Suspended; to the end of each there iS attached a ring of iron of about a foot in diameter, this is Said to have been used as a Gibbet upon which malefactors were wont to be executed. Property of the Trustees of the late R. Tulloh Esqr of Burgie
The following is taken from the Statistical Account. The Castle of Burgie bears the date 1602 [Zeiris] with the family Armorial bearingsS and the initials of the Laird and Lady of that day in the mantle of what was the great hall. The estate came to the Dunbars by Catherine Reid, neice of the last Abbot of Kinloss, and was married to Alexander Dunbar first Laird of Burgie of that name. To the Castle a more commodious house was added in 1702 but along with the original great hall it was in 1802 taken down to build the present mansion. A square tower Similar to that of Blervie but more elegant still remains. |

Parish of Rafford Extracts from New Stat. [Statistical] Account
The origin of the name of this parish is not certainly known. It
has undergone so many alterations as to defy all attempts at fixing
its etymology. In charters of the 13th Century it is styled Ratheforde
and Rathe fd; and in records of subsequent dates, it is designated
Rathed, Rathat, Raffart, Raffort, Raffard, and Rafford, the .......................... -- Rafford written
last of which is the present orthography.
The parish is of a very irregular figure, and is intersected near its .............. -- The first of these indentations was
northern extremity by a narrow neck of the parish of Forres, which ........... -- perambulated but the latter I
stretches for two miles into the interior, while it again encroaches on ........ -- am not certain of, but it is
what might be supposed to be the proper boundaries of that Parish, ........ -- probably correct.
and reaches a point nt farther than a quarter of a mile from the
burgh of that name.
Hydrography- There are several lochs in the parish. The most important
is the Loch of the Romach, which forms a part of the Southern boundary
of the parish. Its extreme length is about a mile, and its breadth about ..... -- Romach Loch written
1/8 of a mile; but what it wants in space is compensated by the romantic
nature of its situation. a streamlet issues from it, which takes the
name of the Back Burn, and which, afterwards increased, winds ................. -- Black Burn written
down the Valley of Pluscarden, famed for its fertility and Stately
Priory. The Loch of the Blairs, or loch of the moss, also on the estate of
Altyre, has been considerably enlarged by the proprietor, and, having ....... -- Loch of Blairs written
been stocked with trout, is now rendered useful as well as ornamental
to his grounds. The loch of Tulloch, on the estate of Blervie, has, ................ -- Tulloch loch written
on the other hand, been much reduced in size, it having been found necessary
to drain it for the purpose of reclaiming a flat of moss which surround it
The Findhorn bounds the parish on the West, and is the only River
in it. The burns of Altyre and Rafford partake very much of ........................... -- Altyre Burn written
the same character as the river Findhorn. The declivities through ................ -- Rafford Burn written
which they pass are so rapid, and theire course lies so much through
deposits of gravel, that they are continually inundating the plains
below with debris, which is a constant annoyance and expense to
those through whose lands they run.
Here are two quarries, one of freestone and the other of grey Slate. ........... -- They have no name |

............................................................................................................. -- Examiners replies to eachof the underlined portions
Contrary to the usual case of the heights feeding the villages below, the
deeper soils are to be met with in the land placed at the highest
elevation in this parish. This to be seen at the Castle of Bargie [Burgie]
and Blervie, the lands of Cluny, belonging to Lord Moray, and
of Phorp, on the estate of Altyre; in each of which the disadvan-
tages of climate, in consequence of high elevation, are more than com-
pensated by the fertility of the soil.
The parish of Rafford, at one time, comprehended part of that of Kinloss
the latter being formed, partly from Rafford, partly from Alves. In 1661
Altyre, then a distinct parish belonging to the parsonage of Dollas, [Dallas]
was by act of Parliament annexed to Rafford.
Landowners - The landowners are Robert Tulloch Esq. of Burgie; ....... -- A.D. Ainsley Esqr bought the lands of the Earl of Fife in this Parish
Sir William G. G. Cumming of Altyre and Gordonstown, Bart. [Baronet] the Earl
of Moray; and the Earl of Fife.
Antiquities.- The most remarkable piece of antiquity in the parish
is the celebrated obelisk called Sweno's Stone, which stands near Tarres, ... -- Sueno's Stone written & described
about ½ a mile eastward of the town of Forres. It has been so often
described, and its origin has been the subject of so many con-
jectures, that nothing new can now be advanced. Warlike instru- ................. -- Shewn on Trace
ments of various Kinds have been dug up in te field where it stands
but no distinct tradition exists of a battle having been fought on or
near the spot. The following accurate description of the obelisk is
taken from Rhynd's "Past and present State of Moray (pages 127.
128 & 129). the Forres Pillar, commonly called Sweno's Stone
is situated about ½ a mile to the east of Forres, on the north side of the
highway, and occupies the position in which, in all probability it
