011.07 | This Castle (the Tower of which alone remains Standing.) Stands a little to the South of Burgie house. It is Six stories in height build of Red Sandstone And though uninhabited yet it is in tolerably good repair. More especially the walls which are quite modern in appearance The roofS of the most of the RoomS are arched over with stones. And in some also the floorS are Covered with large flagS of fireStone There is a Dungeon the floor of which is Sunk a little below the ground In the roof of this Dungeon are two bars of iron each about two feet in length Suspended; to the end of each there iS attached a ring of iron of about a foot in diameter, this is Said to have been used as a Gibbet upon which malefactors were wont to be executed. Property of the Trustees of the late R. Tulloh Esqr of Burgie The following is taken from the Statistical Account. The Castle of Burgie bears the date 1602 [Zeiris] with the family Armorial bearingsS and the initials of the Laird and Lady of that day in the mantle of what was the great hall. The estate came to the Dunbars by Catherine Reid, neice of the last Abbot of Kinloss, and was married to Alexander Dunbar first Laird of Burgie of that name. To the Castle a more commodious house was added in 1702 but along with the original great hall it was in 1802 taken down to build the present mansion. A square tower Similar to that of Blervie but more elegant still remains. |
