" A village was built about the year 1760, by Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk, and Some improvement, to the extent of about 24 acres, at the first was Made, but instead of Continuing
progression; it has for several years been rather retrograde: the roads, only formed, not completed, have fallen into so much disrepair, that to a wheel carriage the village is only accessible from the east; by the South and west roads, the approach on horseback requires the Most careful Circumspection. By an accidental fire, Some years ago, Many of the houses were consumed, and there naked roofless walls Suggest the idea of Tadmor in
the desert, or of Some eastern city, on which judgemnet denounced by Some ancient prophet hath been in part accomplished, for it still retains the Number of about four score worthy inhabitants." Extract from Survey of the Province of Moray. Dated 1798. Compiled by the Revd [Reverend] Mr Grant of Elgin and the Revd [Reverend] Mr Leslie of Darkland, W Grant Esqr of Elchies and Carron is the Superior. |

The tradition of the parish has it, that this was a Church and Church Yard Some 300 years ago - no record apparently is left to Support the tradition, nor is there left but a Meagre record about any of the old churches in the Parish, no portion of the Site is now visible on the ground, but the Surface about the place is ineven as if it were vestiges of the old graves It is Said all the grave Flags were taken away And the Railway Cutting Seems to have touched the South Side of the Grave Yard. Situated amongst old Trees upon the Main of a small
promentory about 4 Chains Westward of where
the Strathspey Section Railwayline Cross the
Cardnach Burn. it is also Said that attempts
were made to restore or rebuild the Church upon the Site in question and the opposing party got it removed to near the Site of the present Parish church - dedication name not

Near the house of Bishop Croft is a Small bed of Whins, where a few Years ago, there Stood a Small piece of Wall, Which was Supposed to have been the remains of a Chapel. The last
proprietor on the removal of the wall, forbid the tenant tilling this piece of Ground but - no idea can be found as to what denomination this place belonged.) There can be little doubt that this place Was a holding of Some religious Sect as the present dwelling house is Said to be erected on the Site of the Clergyman's residence, which is Known as Bishops Croft and
Sometimes Called the priest's Croft. |

On the farm of Ballintomb are two Standing Stones and a third one which formerly Stood with them now lies at the back of the Road dyke. This is Supposed to be remains of One of the Many Circles, Supposed to have been a Druidical place of Worship, but as to the number of Stones formerly here it is impossible to obtain any information. The Stone laying at the back of the road, was put into the Kitchen
of Pitchroy as a Chimney piece, but it is Said he met with Some Misfortune shortly after the placing it, and he thereupon ordered its removal to the place from were he took it. |
