Applied to two Stones lying Almost flat on the ground, Situated respectively on the north and south sides of the County Road from Forres to Elgin and about ¼ mile from the former place. About the year 966 while King Duffus was staying at the Castle of Forres, three witches sought to encompass his death by witchcraft, being detected in the act, and on their being questioned, they made no Secret of their intentions, they were accordingly ordered to be taken to an eminence on the Cluny Hills, and placed in barrells to be rolled down the hill. Wherever these barrells Stopped was to be the scene of their execution, and burial. they came to a Stand at the spot now marked by these stones, and the witches here suffered death by burning. There were originally three stones here, but one has been removed for building purposes. |
