| COCKPEN [parish] | Parish of Cockpen | Statistical Acct.[Account] County Map Gazetteer of Scotland | 007 ; 012 ; 013 | A parish in the County of Edinburgh lying in a South easterly direction from the Metropolis. It is bounded on the north by the Parish of Lasswade; on the east by the Parish of Newbattle; on the south by the Parish of Carrington; and on the west by the Parish of Lasswade, and its area is between 3 & 4 square miles. The south Esk enters the parish from the South, intersects it for nearly 1 1/2 Miles and afterwards forms its boundary with that of Newbattle. The surface of the Parish is somewhat uneven; but the soil is a strong Clay, and is highly cultivated. It contains eight villages the principal of which are Prestonholm, Bonnyrigg, and Westmill. On the left Bank of the Esk near the spot where its crossed by a fine stone bridge, stands the baronial Castle of Dalhousie. The mansion house of Cockpen belongs to the Noble family of Ramsay, and is situated amidst fascinating Scenery. Cockpen is in the presbytery of Dalkeith and Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale.
