[situation] At the S.W. [South west] side of Morningside and SW [South West] of the City of Edinburgh This place consists of two large buildings or establishments. One part consists of a Lunatic Assylum for those who can pay a high rate or a full remuneration their maintanence & Keeping. The other part consists of inmates who pay a partial remuneration for their maintanence & of those who are maintained entirely as paupers. From the relative Situation of these two division of the Assylum One is called the East Division & the other the West Division The latter is the largest & is the pauper departments and is at present filled with inmates to the full extent having 482 inmates. The East Division which Consists of a more affluent class is also nearly filled having at present 60 inmates. The original design of the building scarcely yet half Complete, It is expected to complete a great part of it in the course of next year. This Assylum was first opened in 1813 and a further addition was subsequently built and opened in 1842 under the patronage of the Queen |
