Parish of Corstorphine
Corstorphine Church. -Abridged Ent: from Stat: Acct:18.39.-
Towards the clos of the 14th Century Sir Adam Forrester of Corstorphine erected near the Parish Church another
Chapel; which was dedicated to St John the Baptist and he founded three chaplainries in it and paid to the
Chaplains during his life £24- Scots yearly. After his death this was confirmed by King James 1st who also
granted to Sir John Forrester his heirs the right to present fit persons as chaplaincy to the Bishop of St Andrews
who was bound to admit them to the benefice. Two other chaplainries were founded in the same chapel by
Dame Margaret Forrester. - In 1429 Sir John Forrester founded a Provostry or Collegiate Church
in the kirk - yard of the then parish church of Corstorphine. The second chapel was probably built into this
Collegiate Church for there is no mention of its separate existence after the year 1429 and they were both ded:
icated to the same patron Saint - St John the Baptist.

The church is an ancient building in the form of the Jerusalem Cross erected by Sir John Forester of
Corstorphine in 1429. and dedicated to St John the Baptist. The coat of arms of the family of Forester
is every where dispersed over the building. Within the Church in niches are several monumental remains of
this family. The figures cut out in stone are as large as life : Amidst that decay which they appear to
have suffered from time & decay they exhibit proofs of having been executed with dexterity & skill. The male
figures are covered with complete armour and the female appear richly ornamented according to the
fashion
