This parish is supposed to derive its name from Les, or Lis, signifying in Gaelic a green or garden and Machute, the tutelar Saint of the place, who is said to have settled here in the sixth century. The parish may be described as nearly square and contains 67 square miles, or 34,000 acres. It is bounded on the east by the parishes of Lanark and Carmichael; on the South by Douglas and Muirkirk; on the west by Strathavon & Stonehouse; and on the north by Dalserf and Carluke. The average elevation of more than three-fourths of the parish is probably about 500 feet above the sea;- the remainder lying upon the west and South-west side, rises into considerable hills, dividing the Counties of Lanark and Ayr, some of which may be supposed to be 1200 feet high: they afford an excellent sheep pasture. ** This parish abounds in springs of excellent water. *** There are no historical events of importance connected with Lesmahagow except burning by of the brother of Edward III of the abbey and its destruction a second time by fire, kindled by the zeal of the old reformers. This religious spirit appears to have broken fourth on more occasions for many of the inhabitants bore arms at Bothwell Bridge. The colours and the |

the drum then used are still preserved in the parish.
It was in Lesmahago that the unfortunate Mr Macdonald of Kinlochmoidart was apprehended by a carpenter named Meikle, and a young clergyman of the name of Liming while on his way south to join Prince Charles; in service for which, the clans on their way north, burnt Meikle's house.
*Antiquities - Lesmahagow can boast of little to attract the notice of the antiquarian, excepting the ruins of Craignet [Craignethan] Castle; which about a century ago passed from the family of Hory [?] into that of Douglas by purchase. The remains of an old abbey were pulled down about 30 years ago, to make room for a modern church, an old Roman road, which passed through a corner of the parish, had been obliterated by the plough. * Many large cairns have been removed in this parish, for materials, in making roa [roads] and fences. *** There are no market-towns in the parish. The nearest being Lanark, at a distance of six miles from Abbey Green.
Upwards of 1/3 of the population, however, are congregated in the villages of Abbey Green, Kirkmuirhill, Kirkfield Bank, Boghea [Boghead] and Nethanfoot. * Besides the Glasgow and Carlisle road which runs upwards of 8 miles in the parish, and the Glasgow and Lanark road, running about 5, there are not less than 80 miles of parish roads.
Statistical Account (1843)
There are no detached portions of other parishes within the boundaries of this and no detached portions of this within the boundaries of other parishes. |

An interesting ruin made famous in Old Mortality.
The principal building is a plain quadrangle, unroofed; a winding staircase and several apartments still partially traceable, but generally in an advanced state of decay.
It also contains some subterranean chambers in perfect preservation, in the centre of one of which is a deep well.
The principal entrance is surmounted by the arms of the Hamilton family. A contiguous building, to the east, is in better preservation. The ground apartment probably the kitchen, being still roofed.
The outer wall is high and broad, in good preservation, is flanked with towers and incloses several buildings which have been repaired, and are now used as the offices of a farmsteading.
It was erected in its present form in 1232. It is situated on a conspicuous eminence, covered with old trees. From the summit of the building is obtained a remarkable view of the high rugged cliffs which stretch away towards the Clyde on the north bank of the river Nethan.
It is now the property of the Douglas family. |

In the column "List of names" the entry has originally been Crossford T.P. [Turnpike] but this has been partially scored through and annotated "Pontage only written, it being in the village of Crossford"
Threepwood. No Authority has been shown for the spelling "Thripwood"

A mansion of considerable antiquity but so altered & renewed from time to time as to have become a modern building.
Though mixed in style there is a prevalence of Gothic in the details of construction. The or -nament of a large cross, deeply cut in the stone, is repeated several times upon prominent positions of the building, and an elegant porch supports an immense escutcheon containing the family arms. It is situated at the head of a deep rocky glen traversed by numerous walks.
Property of Gen. [General] Monteith.
A portion of the original building erected about the end of 14th century still remains.

The lowermost of the falls of Clyde. It consists of three shelves which intersect the river of equal height making a total of about 36 feet.
Over these the river is thrown with fearful force. Escaping from the deep channel below it rages among flat and broken rocks then opens out into a broad quiet sheet.
In many of its features Stonebyres Linn is reckoned superior in beauty to the other falls; to this the high rocky precipices one each side, fringed with old gnarled wood, principally contribute |

ABBEY (Site of) [Lesmahagow] |
|
|
031.08 |
A monastery was founded in this parish by David I in 1140. It was dependent on the abbey of Kelso and hence the village which collected round it received the name of Abbey Green which it still retains. This village is nearly in the centre of the parish, and about twenty-two miles from Glasgow. ** There are no historical events of importance connected with Lesmahago, except the burning by the brother of Edward III of the abbey, and its destruction a second time by fire, kindled by the zeal of the old reformers *** The remains of an old abbey were pulled down about thirty years ago, to make room for a modern church.
From Statistical Account (1841)
There is no part of Lesmahagow called the Abbey Green at the present time - The Abbey was founded in 1140, 32 years before Holyrood and 230 before Westminster. The church attached to the Abbey was a plain, Gothic cruciform erection and stood some centuries after the destruction of the Abbey on the ground now covered by the modern building used as the present church.
Fragments of a mullioned window and other details of a Gothic building have been found at different times in various parts of the village, and at considerable distances from the Church. All local information and traditions have been collected but they do not lead to a conjecture of the site of the Abbey -
Information supplied by the Examiner on his being requested to mark the site of the Abbey. |

A name applied to several extensive coal-pits and a large number of houses attached to the coal fields - but as there is no defined limits to what is called "Auchenheath" it was thought the best way, as in the case of farms to confine the name to the two principal collections of tenements: that next the railway is an irregular village consisting of one storey houses, slated in good repair. |

A small tract of moss which, together with the name, extends beyond the Parish By. [Boundary] to Dalserf Ph [Parish] and is very well known in both. Three considerable Proprietors come upon this moss - The Duke of Hamilton, Captain McNeil Hamilton of Raploch, & the heirs of the Douglas family.
It seems to be spelt by the Agent of the latter Ps [Proprietors ?] as "Threepwood", and by the Duke of Hamilton's Agents by the more popular mode "Thripwood". The Douglasses are the largest Proprs [Proprietors] on the moss (See authorities for Farm name in Lesmahagow Ph [Parish]) |
