"The ancient name of this Parish was Cadzow, commonly prounounced Cawgo or Caygae, the etymology of which is uncertain. From Acts of Parliament published by command of his Majesty, we have that the name of this Parish was changed from Cadzow to Hamilton, by virtue of a charter granted by James II of Scotland, to James, first Lord Hamilton. The Parish of Hamilton is situated in the middle ward of Lanarkshire (of which the town of Hamilton is the capital.) From Maidenlees in the south to Bothwell Bridge in the north, it is six miles in length, & from Rotten Burn, where it meets with the Parish of Blantyre, on the west, to the banks of the Clyde opposite Carbarns, where |

The age of this Structure cannot now be ascertained, but it is of great antiquity -
[the - - - date 1647 for a contribution to -- the Bridge of Bothwell]
It consisted originally of four arches, having each a span of 45 feet, by 15 feet broad. Some years ago a large addition was made to the structure, by which the road was widened from 12 to 32 feet. - The engagement which took place between the Covenanters & the troops of Charles II, on the 22d June 1679, commonly called the "Battle of Bothwell Bridge", are too well known to require particular detail. The Kings forces, under the Duke of Monmouth, were drawn up on the Bothwell side of the Clyde. The Covenanting ... |

Also on page - written across columns 1-4:
Bothwell Bridge was the scene of an engagement which took place on the 22nd of June, 1679, between the Covenanters and the King's Army commanded by the Duke of Monmouth, assisted by Claverhouse and Dalzell. The King's army advanced by the north or Bothwell side. The Covenanters amounted to 4,000; and the bridge was vigorously defended for a time by Hackston and Rathillet; but the main body divided among themselves, and madly employing the precious moments while the King's troops were carrying the bridge in cashiering their officers, were soon thrown into confusion; 400 were killed, chiefly in the pursuit, and 1,200 taken prisoners,"

Bothwell Bridge (continued) - Army, amounting to about 4000 men, occupied the opposite bank, belong to the Duke of Hamilton. The centre of the Bridge, which was then long & narrow, having a portal in the middle, with gates, had been barricaded by the Covenanters, & was the chief scene of the engagement" New Statistical Account.
Written across columns 4 & 5 - The old Bridge may be seen from beneath the arches, the number of which (four) is, as noted in Statl. [Statistical] Account. All the authorities remember the old Bridge before it was widened. One, Dr. Bar of Silvertonhill, remembers the Portal standing, but most persons, of any time in the country, consider that the Portal was destroyed before the time of any one now living. The old part of the Bridge is on the west side. There are numerous stone buttresses to the walls forming the sides of the Road which crosses the Bridge. The old side of the Bridge, the [--] has Iron Stanchions on each buttress of the arches. A tree in "Barmichael Wood" cut down, sometime ago, was found to be perforated with bullets, supposed to have been fired from the Royalists. |

Highly ornate terraced stairs lead on either hand from the low ground, on the River front, to an external platform, on which the colossal Lions by H. Ritchie, have been placed. Below on the rustic basement, above the portals to the vaults, are efficies of Lfe, Death & Eternity, each personified by a human visage. The internal arrangements of the Chapel are octagonal. The first, or lower course, had four deep, alternated by four flat, alcoves or recesses. The second a series of Shileds, with cherubs & pious scrolls. The third, & upper course, contains a series of niches for Statues, separated by twin Doric pilasters. Dentilling & other enrichments follow as the dome narrows, to a circular opening, covered by an immense concave glass roof in one casting, lighting the whole chapel. On a plain slab outside, on the circular part of the tower, above the chapel door, is the following inscription (in latin): - "Alexander tenth Duke of Hamilton, took care to erect this tomb for him & his." - Brown's Directory |

An arched Gateway which was intended for a garden of Hamilton Palace, but was never used for that purpose. It is preserved, as it stands in a shrubbery, south of the Mausoleum, for its age & beauty. The exact age of it is not known, but it is generally believed to be 200 years of age. "The oat Hill, where once justice was dispensed, a curious stone cross with wavy mystical inscriptions, and an old carved Gateway are sole relics of the Netherton." - Brown's Directory.

An ordinary well about 10 feet deep partly covered, for protection, by flag stones placed over it. It stands on the side of a Public Road between "Low Motherwell" Farm & the village of Motherwell, & is said to have been dedicated to the Lady Mother - the Virgin Mary, & hence the name of the village & the Farms of Motherwell. It is well known in the vicinity as an antiquity but of what date could not be ascertained. The people of Motherwell have an old privilige of drawing water from it. There is a Public Right of way to it from the village of Motherwell, which was recently tried to prevent by the Proprietor of the ground - the Duke of Hamilton, but without effect. |

It was built in 1779, after a flood had destroyed a Bridge which stood in the same place, & since that time has borne the term "New Bridge", a name by which it is as well knows as that upon the authorities here quoted, who consider this to be the proper name. There was a pontage on this Bridge until these last two years. The old Toll house is on the east side of the Bridge & is now occupied by Colliers. At the west side of the Bridge there is a gate which the Duke of Hamilton is obliged to keep open for persons belonging to the Burgh of Hamilton, going for sand from the Clyde Side, about 9 chains north of the Bridge. This sand bed is Public for persons of the Burgh only. The Duke has the right of the ground & the people the liberty of procuring sand 0 the sand has no name except Clyde Sand. |

This applies to a piece of rock projecting to the edge of the "Meikle Burn", & forming a cave, or covering, in which there is a good spring. There is a stone table & seats around it within the cave, made by persons visiting & taking refreshments at it. The name is well known & the place also, from there being a Fossil Tree at it. This Tree has been carried away by small portions _ taken by visitors to the "Cave". |

These comprise the whole of the policies of the high grounds of Hamilton, enclosed by a wall about 10 feet high. They extend from "Old Avon Bridge" in the north (xviii-1 Trace 4) to the Lands of "High & Laigh Quarter" in the South (xviii-9 Trace 4-5); & from "High Merryton" in the east (xviii-9 Trace 3) to "Low Waters" in the west (xvii-8 Trace 2). There are several Parks, within the "High Parks", bearing names like those of an ordinary estate. The "Avon Water" & "Meikle Burn" flow through. "Chatelherault", the remains of "Cadzow Castle", the "old oaks" of the "Caledonian Forest" in which the celebrated White Cattle browze, & "Belvidere Plantation", are within the "High Parks". There are several Lodge Gates at different parts of the wall enclosing the policies. The Low Parks of Hamilton are separated from these by the Lands of "Barncluith" - on xvii-4 Trace 6 & xviii-1 Trace 4. |

Caledonian Forest Old Oaks (Continued) - would be recognised, but both are used generally. The last two authorities, Messrs. Hamilton & Henderson, give the name "Old Oaks" only, believing that from them being in rows* at some places, there is no right to the name "Caledonian Forest". They are commonly called Cal:[Caledonian] Forest by the Keepers, etc. employed in the "High Parks", but all persons, with the two exceptions above, couple, or are at a loss as to which should be used, when questioned. All authorities of any value have been applied to. The parks or fields south of the "Old Oaks" are called the "Chases".
*There is no appearance of regularity in the position of these trees at any place. Their appearance is natural. (See the other side stating that some were planted in 1140 by King David.) |

This Burn rises at "Burnhead Quarry", xvii-15 Trace 1 & flows through the Farms of "Muttonhole or Thorniehill", (xvii-15 Trace 6) "Blackbog" (xvii-12 Trace 5) & enters the policies of the "High Parks", on Trace 2. xvii-12, where it is known as "Meikle Burn" until it passes out of the parks on Trace 6, xvii-4, near "Silvertonhill". From this point to where it enters the Clyde (xviii-1 Trace 4) at "Smithycroft", it is known as "Covan Burn". In the first part of its course it has no name, being, like all minor streams, named from the various Farms through which it flows. The Statistical Account gives it the name of "Covan Burn" generally, but that name is not known until [it] passes out of the Parks & enters the Clyde, As the proper well known name _ "Meikle Burn" |

Muttnhole is the original name & Thornyhill the new one. Mr Graeme's authority is, that the former (Muttonhole) is the local name, & the latter (Thornyhill) as it at present appears in writings in the Offices. As written on Examination Traces ("Muttonhole or Thornyhill") is the mode best suited to the retaining of both names, which appear to be necessary to couple. |

"A neighboring Farmer lately set this stone upright" (about 20 years ago) "leaving posterity to wonder why it was called "Crooked Stone." Patrick's Directory of Hamilton.
The name it is known by throughout the Parish is as written on Trace. It is about 6 feet high & from a foot to 2 feet in diameter. The part, or end in the ground is about 3 feet in extent & is of a different shape from the portion standing upright, but forms a part of the same stone. It cannot be shewn larger without exaggerating. |

About 60 years ago the people of the neighborhood dug up the foundations in search of money etc. supposed to be hidden beneath. The knoll is as represented on Trace having a mass of loose stones & [rubble] on top of it, without any defineable outline of its remains, or shape. This Burn rises in the South west of the Parish, at "Burnhead Quarry" (xvii-15-Trace 1), & is not known by any name until it enters the High Parks of Hamilton, through which, it bears the well known name "Meikle Burn" [in margin - See N. Sheets of xvii-8-Trace 4]. From the point where it passes out of the High Parks (the wall enclosing the policies, xvii-4 Trace 6) 'till it enters the Avon (Trace 4. xviii-1) it is well known by the name "Covan Burn", which is supposed to be a corruption of convent from a Convent said to have been about here in former times. No accounts that have been seen or the best & oldest authorities in the neighborhood could point out the site of such a building. |

"In 1153 & 1289, the old Scottish Kings held their courts at Cadzow Castle; which continued to be Royal property till after the Battle ofBannockburn. It stands in Hamilton Wood" (this wood is known as Avon Banks) "on the summit of a precipitous rock, the base of which is washed by the Avon. It is not known who were its founders, although it is probable that Caw or Cay was the first of the Royal Race who took up their residence in this quarter. The Castle of Cadzow seems to have been repaired at different periods. The Keep, with the fosse around it, a narrow-bridge on the south, over the fosse, & a well inside, are still in good preservation, & are all of polished stone of a reddish colour. Several vaults & the walls, probably of the Chapel, and their Offices are still visible." New Statistical Account. (Over |

Lanarkshire -- Hamilton Palace
Cadzow Castle (continued) - The thick walls shewn on Trace are, upon the authorities quoted, supposed to be the remains of the Chapel. Between the Chapel & the south west corner of the ruins, and along the south, there are some remains of the fosse. The Keep is also to be seen on the south side. The outline of two round towers may be traced at the south west, & east corners. All the ruins east of the Chapel are covered with earth, scattered stones, & trees. There are several underground rooms, or vaults, one of the latter leads to the Well, which is in good preservation but filled with rubbish to within 8 or 10 feet of the top. This well resembles the one at Bothwell Castle. |

This is a ruin in the form of a square having part of the walls & the foundations standing. The latter are represented on Trace by a dotted line, the former, the walls, by a firm thick line. This is, upon the authorities here quoted, the remains of an Ancient Castle. About 30 years ago the people of the neighborhood destroyed other parts of it by digging in search of a Gold Bull said to have been hidden beneath the ruins. No accounts of the Parish that have een seen make mention of this Castle, which is well known in the Parish. |
