The only remains of this ancient mansion are the "Dove Cot", written in German text, and a ... old yew tree which stands about 250 links from the Dove Cot, on the north side, but on the east side of the occupation road shown as a fir. There is no doubt of the antiquity of the Dove Cot - the under or lower storey has arched roofs. It is about three storie's high. The roof is almost fallen in . it is looked upon in the neighbourhood as being the age of the Raploch Mansion. No date appears upon it. |

This field belongs to the mansion of Broomhill, the property of Captain McNeil Hamilton and is part of the ornamental grounds. It is a well known name. On the authority of William Smillie of Raploch, the chapel stood, from tradition, at the place written "Old Wall", which though now without what is considered the Chapel Rone Field, was part of the "Rone" before the present avenue and plantation was made. The other authorities, which are older, do not believe the wall to be part of the chapel, but rather the remains of a few houses which stood there about 60 years ago, and bore the name of Shepherd's Neuk, a name which is now altogether disused. The site of the chapel has not been written on trace. |

The name applies to the houses between "Muir's Place", and "Quoad sacra church", but principally to the house by the side of the Parish road, from turnpike road, leading to "Bowmans Flat". There is no hill or knowe here now, but there appears to have been some elevated ground about the houses to which the name is written. None of the older persons of the locality remember of the hill, but from the name being so generally used to the house where the name is written, it is likely that it stands on the Gallowhill. The name could not be repeated to the elevated portion of ground. |

"The ancient residence of the Hamiltons Of Dalserf was at Auldton (or Auldtown) now converted into a farm steading". New Statistical Account.
The antiquated portion of this farm house is crossed on examination Trace. The modern buildings adjoining the old mansion - which is that where the date 1610 appears in raised figures on the north eastern corner, have been built in various sizes, without respect to the size of the old house - a small house has been added to the east end, and a new house has recently been erected at right angles with the north side, covering an enclosed stone staircase. At the place written "Gate" there is arched gateway having a belfry on the top - The bell is now in the Parish Church belfry. The detached house south west, is said to be a part of the old offices of the mansion house.
It is now the property of James Campbell Hamilton of Dalserf House |

It was, before it was destroyed, composed of stones like a cairn.

tumulus stood, and it now appears like ground raised a little about the root of the tree. The bottom of the elevated ground is sketched. The tree.
Upon the authority of W. Henderson, Farmer, Dalpatrick, the site of Saint Patrick's Chapel", is where the tumulus stood, but this seems to be more an opinion than from tradition or otherwise. Mr John Johnstone, Hamilton, who lived here about 40 years ago, has heard the tree at the tumulus named the hiyin mary tree", This is the only thing which shows a probability of the chapel site being upon the tumulus. The stones taken from the tumulus, as stated by Mr W. Henderson of Dalpatrick, did not appear to be foundation stones, or the ruins of a building. |

Cairncockle (continued) XXIV - II Trace 1
This name is well known in the Parish as applying to the highest spot in Dalserf, but the remains of the Cairn have never been seen by the oldest resident in the locality - Mr J Watson of Burnhead, who has been there nearly 90 years. Since hollow places resembling Land-holes, as stated by Mr Watson, were seen near the top of it before the Plantation was made. There are no appearances now of any ditch or fortification around this feature, which is as irregular in form as the sketch in Examination Trace shows it. Half the distance between the top & bottom is sketched. The name is written on the top, or level - at the top. It does not appear to have been artificial. |
