018.14 "There is a conical rising ground (gallowhill) south east of Larkhall, where it is said, culprits used in ancient times to be executed".
New Statistical Account.
The name applies to the houses between "Muir's Place", and "Quoad sacra church", but principally to the house by the side of the Parish road, from turnpike road, leading to "Bowmans Flat". There is no hill or knowe here now, but there appears to have been some elevated ground about the houses to which the name is written. None of the older persons of the locality remember of the hill, but from the name being so generally used to the house where the name is written, it is likely that it stands on the Gallowhill. The name could not be repeated to the elevated portion of ground.
