OS1/21/11/1 CARLUKE [parish] Carluke Statistical Account Revd.[Reverend] John Wylie Minister Revd.[Reverend] Lawrence Lockhart D.D. James Harvie Esq.[Esquire] Daniel Rankin Esq.[Esquire] Johnston's County Map dated 1816 Forrest's County Map 018; 019; 024; 025 "The earliest notice of Carluke Parish occurs "in a Charter of Robert I, by which he grants to "the Monks of Lesmahagow ten merks yearly, from "the revenue of his mills at Madeslay, for the "purpose of supporting lights at the tomb of "St.[Saint] Machute. In a second Charter of the same "Monarch, dated 8th March 1315, he conveys to "these Monks from his mill of Carluke, other ten "Merks yearly, to supply eight wax lights for "the tomb of Machute, on Sundays and Festivals. "In the same reign, the church of Eglis- "Maluack, in Strathclyde, with all its rights "and pertinents, is granted by the King to the "Monks of Kelso. From these facts, it is sup- "posed that the name of the church was Eglis- "Maluak, whilst the Parish in general was "distinguished by the appellation of Carluack "or Carluke. The former of these names is "supposed to be compounded of the three "Gaelic words, Eglis, a church, Maol, shaved, "hence a saint, and Luac, Luke, - the Church "of St. Luke. Carluke appears to be com- "pounded Caer, Hill and Luac, the hill of St.
OS1/21/11/2 "St. Luke, - a name applicable to the elevated nature of the "greater portion of the Parish." A traditional Account copied in page gives a different derivation for the name of the Parish. "The length of the Parish from West to East, is about 8 miles, and "its greatest breadth 4½ miles. It is bounded on the South by Lesma- "hagow, from which it is divided by the River Clyde; on the west by "Cambusnethan, Garrion Gill dividing the two Parishes; on the "north, likewise by Cambusnethan; and on the east and South "east, by Carnwath, Carstairs, and Lanark, the boundaries between "the latter Parish and it being March Gill." For an Account of the rapid increase of the population of the town of Carluke and its priveleges see page Besides the town of Carluke, "there are three small villages in the "parish viz.[videlicet] Braidwood, Kilncadzow and Yieldshields" Stat. Accnt.[account] The parish church is situated in the North West of the town the Manse in the South East, and the parish School in the West. There are 4 other schools in the town of Carluke, also a U.P. Church and Manse, a Free Church and Manse, a Roman Catholic Chapel & school a United Original Secession Church and Manse, and a Congregational Chapel. It also contains a post Office, a Branch of the City of Glasgow Bank, a Branch of the British Linen Company's Bank, also three Inns and 8 Public houses. The turnpike roads from Stirling to Carlisle, and from Glasgow to Carnwath pass through the parish. The parish contains 15410 Statute Acres, there are no detached portions of this parish, nor are there any detached portions of any other Parish situated within it.
OS1/21/11/2 In the third line I think the author has omitted the page number where the traditional account is spelt out! If/when I come across it i will edit this note appropriately. Similarly further down this commentary there is a missing page reference. I think this should refer to pages 61/2 which detail population growth local economy and governance.

OS1/21/11/15 ST LUKE'S CHURCH and Cistercian Abbey (Supposed Site of) [Mauldslie] Supposed Site of St Luke's Church and Cistercian Abbey (14th century) Daniel Rankin Esqr.[Esquire] J.L. Stewart Esqr.[Esquire] J Hosier Esqr.[Esquire] 018.16 The earliest notice of Carluke parish occurs in a charter of Robert I by which he grants to the monks of Lesmahute ten merks yearly from the revenue of his mills of Mauldslie for the purpose of supporting lights at the tomb of St.[Saint] Mahute. In a second charter of the same monarch dated 8th March 1315 he conveys to these monks from his mills of Carluke other ten merks yearly to supply eight wax lights for the tomb of Machute on sundays and festivals- In the same reign the church of Eglis-Maluack in Strathclyde with all its rights and pertinents is granted by the King to the monks of Kelso.- From these facts it is supposed that the name of the church was Eglis-Maluack whilst the parish in general was distinguished by the appellation of Carluack or Carluke-. The former of these names is supposed to be compounded from three Gaelic words Eglis. a church Maol. shaved - hence a Saint. and Luac. Luke. the church of St.[Saint] Luke. Stat. Acct.[Account] - Both history & tradition are silent as to the exact date of the removal of the ph.[parish] church from strathclyde to the centre of the parish. (See remarks on St.[Saint] Lukes Church in Plan 19-13) but from (Remains of)

OS1/21/11/15 Parish of Carluke
OS1/21/11/15 Template entries are sort of duplicated. I have chosen the one closest to the image. Not marked as complete only because of that discepancy and the note below. The original actually reads Supposed Site of St. Luke's Church and Cistercian Abbey That is somewhat different from the template. Description is continued on the next page. There is an abbreviation that looks like "pk" that I cannot decipher. Just realised it is "ph" See top of page. PARISH!
OS1/21/11/16 Continued 18.16 Fullarton's Imperial Gazetteer and other authentic sources it appears that an abbey subordinate to that of Lesmahagow and belonging to monks of the habit an order of cistercians was coeval with and situated close to the church of St.[Saint] Luke, and this is further confirmed by the circumstance of a portion of holmland which is now embraced in the ornamental grounds of Mauldslie, having been known a century back to the inhabitants of the locality by the name of Abbey Steads; but the site of which at the present day cannot be exactly pointed out.

OS1/21/11/59 There are 2 entries in the original for "School" but only one in the template. It does imply that it covers both but it is unclear why and slightly silly. OS1/21/11/61 CARLUKE [village] Carluke Rev[eren]d John Wylie Daniel Rankin Esq J.L. Stewart Esq John Hamilton Esq. 019.13 The village of Carluke has within a few years swelled into the size and assumed the importance of a thriving town its present population (1841) amoun= ting to 2125. It was erected into a burgh of barony in 1662 under the name of Kirkstyle. with the privelege of holding a weekly market and a fair twice in the year. This privelege so far as the weekly market is concerned has not been acted upon but the town is well supplied with shops for the sale of bread, butcher meat, and every other article of provision. The recent act for the establishment of municipal government in Scotch towns having been taken advantage of by Carluke as tax of sixpence a pound in house rent is levied for the purpose of supporting a few constables and of cleaning and lighting the streets. **** To those who are acquainted with the town and Parish of Carluke the former containing numerous streets of comfortable houses- the latter fully divided and in a high state of cultivation the following circumstances may convey an ides of the very rapid stride made by the neighbourhood. There is still alive an individual if not more who remembers since the village of Carluke contained only 4 cottages with the Kirk and Manse. *******
OS1/21/11/61 There are symbols like X but with dots in each of the 4 interstices of the X. I have interpreted these as asterisks but they do not appear to refer to footnotes anywhere. They seem to fill the line to the RHS at the end of the paragraph. May have been a style adopted by the writer. David Braidwood - The text between the two sets of Xs is in fact a footnote in the Statistical Account.
OS1/21/11/62 Carluke (continued) Forty years ago the only bakers bread used in the Parish was 1/6 worth brought weekly from Lanark or Glasgow Stat. acc[oun]t 1841 The latter paragraph is evidently an error on the part of the Stat: Acct: for Mauldslie Castle was erected prior to 1800 and was the residence of the Earl of Hyndford. The town contains about 4000 inhabitants inclusive of Crawforddyke Street the great proportion of which are dependent for subsistence on the immense Iron Works in this and the adjoining Parishes: it contains branches of the City of Glasgow and British Linen Companies Banks both fine buildings it is however badly lit with gas there being no public lamps in the town and only a few private ones at long intervals: in general the houses are one storey and slated. but a good many excellent houses (two storeys) have lately been built in Kirkton S[tree]t. Two annual cattle fairs are held at Carluke one on the 21st May the other on the 31st October.*** There are 3 good Inns in the town and a good many public houses. The principal proprietor is John Hamilton Esq of Fairholm and Kirkton.
OS1/21/11/62 The first 2 paragraphs of this page did not read easily. In particular the second line of paragraph 1 where I could not figure out the word after 1/6. Reference to the Stat Account (footnote on page 592) rendered the correct interpretation and made it clear that 1/6 is 1shilling and sixpence (18 old pence or 7½ new pence) Paragraph 2 just does not seem to logically follow. But it may actually refer to the final paragraph of OS1/21/11/61 that mentions Carluke consisting of only 4 cottages and a church.

OS1/21/11/67 KIRKTON Kirkton Rev[eren]d John Wylie Daniel Rankin Esq John Hamilton Esq: Statistical Acct: of Lanarkshire Johnston's County Map dated 1816 Forrest's County Map 019.13 Kirkton, anciently church lands belonging to the Abbey of Kelso. was in 1662 erected into a barony by Charles II in favour of Walter Lockhart a cadet of the family of Wickenshaw at that time its proprietor, it now belongs to John Hamilton Esq: of Fairholm Stat. Acct. The dwelling-house presents the usual appearance of Old Scottish Mansions with its small windows, steep roof & serrated gables. It would appear from a stone which is placed over one of the windows that its erection took place very early in the 17th Century. but the stone is very much defaced. A room is pointed out where it is said that Charles II after his restoration and whilst making a tour through the Scotch portion of his Kingdom slept two nights. and although this is not mentioned in the Stat: Account it is is universally admitted to be correct. OS1/21/11/69 ST LUKE'S CHURCH (Remains of) St. Luke's Church (Remains of) Rev[eren]d John Wylie Daniel Rankin Esq. J.L. Stewart Esq. 019.13 It appears from the Stat: Acct: that prior to the Reformation the Parish Church was dedicated to St. Luke (see extract under the head of "supposed site of St. Lukes Ch: and Cistercian Abbey" in Plan 18.16.) and that subsequent to the Reformation this building was still used as a place of worship, of which positive evidence is obtained from the Stat. Acct. which states that "During the earlier part of the reign of the 1st Charles a manifest was published at Carluke Kirk door denouncing the reigning Monarch etc. etc." The Church was however gradually allowed to fall into decay until the erection of the present Parish Church in 1799 when it became entirely disused. all that remains at present of the ancient pile is its Belfry which is about 60 feet high and from which the old P[aris]h Bell is still suspended. and the remains of portions of two aisles the larger one being about 3 or 4 feet above the surface and the smaller one almost level with the ground the
OS1/21/11/70 St. Luke's Church (Remains of) Continued the larger and smaller aisles were used respectively by the families of Mauldslie and Milton Lockhart as places of sepulchre. It may not be uninteresting to extract the following from the Stat: Acct: "By the following tradition the name of the P[aris]h is derived from a different source. The Church was formerly situated in the forest of Mauldslie, hence it was sometimes called the Forest Kirk: Close to the banks of the Clyde. This situation being at the extremity of the Parish, was found inconvenient, and it was therefore proposed that the Church should be removed to a more centrical spot. This proposal met with strong opposition from a part of the population, who clung to the holy ground, and after much difficulty could only be brought to agree that the new site should be the Law of Mauldslie, a situation not far from the old one. this however not meeting the views of the opposite party, it was at length determined that the dispute should be submitted to the arbitration of Providence. with this view a pow (skull) was taken from the ancient burial ground & together with a burning peat was laid on the proposed sit at the Law. If the pow and peat remained that was to be the spot; but if they should be removed by a "Guiding hand" the Church ws to be erected wherever they might be found. They were removed and the whole Parish was raised to seek for the pow and peat. after much search they were at last to the joy of the people discovered by Symeon Haddow of Easterseat on the spot where the C[hurc]h was eventually erected, about two miles nearer Symeon's house than the Law. The truth was that the Guiding hand was none other than that of Symeon himself a secret which was carefully kept within his family for many generations. Hence the name Kirk-look, the looking for the Kirk. The derivation is of course absurd: but there can be little doubt as to the reference to Providence and its result."
OS1/21/11/71 CHURCH [Carluke] Church Kirk ---------Do----- Rev[eren]d John Wylie Daniel Rankin Esq J.L. Stewart Esq Statistical Acct. of Lanarkshire Johnston's County Map dated 1816 Forrest's County Map 019.13 The Church a substantial building erected in 1799 at an expense of £1000 is situated almost in the centre of the parish and is consequently as conveniently placed as it could be: none of the inhabitants being more than 4 miles distant and very few so far. The Church contains upwards of 1500 sittings 300 of which are free; during the present year 1858 it has been thoroughly repaired.
OS1/21/11/71 MANSE [parish, Carluke] Manse Rev[eren]d John Wylie Daniel Rankin Esq J.L. Stewart Esq. A Charter of the farm called Hill of Kilncadzow Charter dated 1762 Charter dated 1423 Charter dated 1492 Charter dated 1583 Charter dated 1644 Statistical Account of Lanarkshire Johnston's County Map dated 1816 Forrest's County Map 025.03 A small village situated in the S.E. of the parish on the T.P. road from Edinburgh to Glasgow, and contiguous to Kilncadzow Law, the most elevated ground in the parish. It contains a private adventure school, a small public house, and a rural and mining population of about 200. From the village and circumjacent ground of a clear day the spires of Glasgow are visible, and a most extensive view of the valley of the Clyde is obtained on the north; and on the south the horizon is bounded by the towering mountains of Crawford and Crawfordjohn - upwards of 20 miles distant. The Roman Road from Agricola's camp in Lanark parish, passes near the village, and it is probable that their was a Roman station on the neighbouring Law.
OS1/21/11/118 The original name "Kilncadzow" has been deleted and replaced with "Kilcadzow" The original name is described as obsolete. And there is a parenthetical reference "(See DR. 87/826/45 bound in ONB)" The description for the village is continued in the preceding sheet OS1/21/11/117.
OS1/21/11/118 The authorities for the various spellings are complex and difficult to enter in the template. The original name of Kilncadzow was ascribed to Messrs McLean, Stewart Wylie and Rankin and also to the farm charter and the Charter of 1762 Kilcagdow - to the Charter dated 1423 Kilcairdzie - to the Charters dated 1492 and 1583 Kincadzow - to the Charter dated 1644 Kilcadzow - to the Statistical Account of Lanarkshire and the 2 County Maps Locally the village name is pronounced KILCAIGIE and one can see that derivation from a couple of the spellings (with a bit of imagination!) It is unclear why the spelling of the name of such an insignificant little hamlet attracted so much attention but there is a bit of correspondence in the sheets towards the end of the Carluke Parish stuff.

OS1/21/11/127 The proprietor's name for Gladdenhill is shown in the description with the surname only. In the spelling column the forename is unclear. It is an abbreviation. It could be " Jas" but the first letter is unlike the "J" in "J.L.S." It could be "I" but I cannot find a name to fit. It could be a poor "S". "Sus" could be Susan but he is clearly male. It is an addendum so the only writing for comparison is the entry itself. My best guess would be "Ins" which is what i have transcribed. I think it is an unusual abbreviation for Iohannes/John (see sheet 131) as a John Miller is shown as the proprietor of Byreneuk. I recall there is (was) a smallholding called Bryarneuk close to Gladdenhill and that has to be more than coincidence. Neuk The word "parperty" I assume is a misspelling of property!

Stewart Esq: Johnston's County Map dated 1816 Forrest's County Map Statistical Acc[oun]t of Lanarkshire Do---Do---Do--- Hallbar. a square tower beau= tifully situated in a fine dell is said to have been built in the 11th Century. Early as this date is, the appearance of the stair passing up the walls in the thickness of the building*, together with some other circumstances, would seem to countenance the supposition of its great antiquity. It is 52 feet in height, 24 feet square on the outside, &14 feet square in the interior. it contains a vault beneath and three appart- ments the one above the other , the uppermost of these being likewise closed with an arched roof. The beams for supporting the floors which constitute the ceilings of the two intermediate apartments instead of being inserted into the wall, rest upon projecting brackets of stone. In a deed of retour, dated 1685 it is called the Tower & Fortalice of Braidwood. From this it seems to have been the residence attached to that ancient barony. it is the property of Sir N.McD. Lockhart Bar[one]t Stat: Acct: *(From the vent of the only fire place in the Tower passing up the North wall the stair is of Course interrupted on that side and to arrive at its continuation it is necessary to pass across the floor of one of the appartments. Stewart Esq: Statistical Acc[oun]t of Lanarkshire 025.05 The name of the above mentioned farmsteading is derived from the circumstance of a Chapel having formerly stood on the spot . The Stat. Account says that " at "the South of the Parish there had" "been a chapel of St. Oswald" where some sepulchral remains have been lately dug up". there is not a vestige of this building in existence at the present time.

OS1/21/11/134 This sheet has nothing on it apart from a signature F. E. Pratt Capt[ain] [Royal?] Engineers There appears to be no reason for it.
OS1/21/11/135 This appears to be a copy of the page relating to Yieldshields. I think this has been retained because of debate about spelling of the village name and the annotations on this sheet and the following one. Main entry for Yieldshields is page 79 and contains the information here except for the annotations Zuleshiells Yuleshiells were inserted by someone and P Yule with reference to the Index of Charters granted by the different sovereigns of Scotland by William Robertson Esq.
OS1/21/11/136 This sheet contains a note which I think supports an alternate spelling of Yieldshields. The note reads: one of the deputies of the Lord Clerk Register for Keeping the Records of Scotland Edinburgh 1798 Extracted from the above mentioned work "page 24. No 11 Robert 1st tax tward -------to John de Monfode of the lands of Braidwood and Yuleshiells with the lands of Hevedis in vic de ----------Lanark" NB King Robert reigned between 1306 1329
OS1/21/11/137 This appears to be a title page It has OS321 underlined typed in the middle of the top edge In the centre of the page NAME BOOK Parish of Carluke Co. Lanark There is an impressed ink stamp - 2 ellipses one inside the other. In the space between the ovals it reads round the top half *ORDNANCE SURVEY DRAW & REP DIV * Inside the smaller oval there is inscribed MANUSCRIPT 6-DEC 1945 S. SECTION In the top RH corner there is handwritten OS1/21/11 137 and underneath there is the number 11 with a circle round it. In the top LH corner there are 2 vertical lines that could be the number 11

OS1/21/11/142 This is a handwritten letter dated 16 May 61 (presumably 1861) My dear General I send you the orthography sheet respecting the place we have called Yieldshields, and shall be glad if you would insert the name in the way you think it should be spelt. I shall be going to Scotland in August and hope I may be fortunate enough to meet you. Yours truly (signature indecipherable but looks like it could be " Henry James". See letter on next page) (In the bottom LH corner it says " M. General Yule" and I assume that is to whom the letter was sent)
OS1/21/11/143 Another letter to Major General Yule commenting on the one in OS1/21/11/142 Dated 24 May 1861 and may be from Southampton It is marked Copy My dear General Sir Henry James requests me to inform you that he has received your letter of the 22nd May & that due ????? will be given to your information (2 indecipherable words) yours truly Ady Scott ( I think that is the signatory but not clear) There is another page - may have been written on back of letter or an attachment perhaps. This replicates (may be the origin of) information of sheets concerning Yieldshields. Text is Index to Charters granted by the different sovereigns of Scotland by William Robertson Esq[ui]r[e] Edinburgh (printed 1798) Overwritten on the note someone has described William Robertson as "one of the Deputies of the Lord Clerk Register for keeping the records of Scotland" Extract from page 24 Robert 1st ------------to John de Moufode of the lands of Braidwood and Zuleshiells*, with the lands of Hevedis in vic de--------Lanark *In the Index to the book itself this is spelt Yuleshiells. N.B. in the old maps & in the statistical accounts of Scotland, the above place is erroneously spelt Yieldshields & Guildshields

OS1/21/11/145 United Services Club Edinburgh 13th May 1861 Dear Sir Henry The accompanying extract relates to an unimportant matter, the correct name of an obscure village in Lanarkshire which I found by accident. My residence is not now in Scotland where I am only on a visit, and I hope to settle in London and shall be glad to meet you as I shall not be here when you come in august. I have lately enquired if the field of Bannockburn has been enquired, & when published, I shall better understand the position of the army of Bruce concerning which I raised an anonymous discussion last summer in the Edinburgh Courant (?). I mention this as such enquiries were entered into by your orders in regard to Cromwell's victory at Dunbar. Yours truly P Yule Sir Henry James
OS1/21/11/148 Towards the end of the letter there is a reference to a discussion, I presume, in a newspaper, I have transcribed it as the Edinburgh Courant but I could not make any better sense of the second word. I shall try Google. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Edinburgh Courant was a broadsheet newspaper from the 18th century. It was published out of Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Its first issue was dated February 14-19, 1705 and was sold for a penny. It was one of the country's first regional papers, second only to the Norwich Post (1701). The paper was produced twice weekly for five years, then continued as the Scots Courant until April 1720. Later that same year, the Edinburgh Evening Courant began publication, and it survived until the Evening News came into existence in 1873.
OS1/21/11/149 14 Carnwath Road Kilcadzow Carluke Lanarkshire Scotland 17.9.45. Recd. 22.9.45. The Sup[erintendan]t Ordnance Survey Depot. Dear Sir I take the liberty of sending you the enclosed on name of the village and its associates, and trust that you will have the "n" removed in all future issues of the district maps. Thanking you in anticipation I am Your faithfully (Sgd) J HAMILTON Ack'd by D.R.+ August 10th 1945 THE CARLUKE GAZETTE KILCADZOW OR KILNCADZOW A would be authority on spelling recently broadcast the statement that the present form " Kilcadzow" is wrong and that "Kilncadzow" should be used. this is entirely wrong as the simpler form is the original and has been used for at least seven hundred years, whereas the use of the letter "n" has been used for only a short period, probably not more than one hundred years. As the prefix "Kil" means cell, the original names seems to have been due to a religious hermit named Cadzow having a cell in the village. The form "Kiln" can only be due to the pevalence of lime workings at the time when the burning operations were done in lime kilns but these have been entirely discontinued for the past 14 years at least. Anyone wishing to corrobarate the use of the simpler spelling need only refer to documentary evidence in the Register House, Edinburgh, and for continued use to such publications as Vol. 4 of "The Ordnance Gazetter of Scotland" and "The History of South Lanarkshire". About 14 years ago the Lanarkshire County Council issued a request that the sue of the letter "n" in the name should be discontinued and wide notification was given, including that to the "Hamilton Advertiser", which at once changed the district news heading from "Kilncadzow" to "Kilcadzow".

This anme has always been shown on O.S. maps as KILNCADZOW although several modes of spelling were recorded at the date of the original survey in 1861 (see Object Name Book, page 118) In view of the fact that three of the original authorities were in favour of KILCADZOW and that the present day Postmaster, the Clerk of the Parish who is also apparently the Registrar of Births (see O.S. 230's attached) and the Lanarkshire County Council have adopted this spelling, I recommend that KILCADZOW be shown on O.S. maps.
