012.11 | An elevated portion of planted ground having a good natural slope falling towards the west named from a chapel which is said to have stood on the top of the Knowe - (See description of Site of Chapel on other side) There is a Cotter's dwelling on the side of the Parish Road, south of the Knowe, to which the name may if necessary be applied, in a compounded form, upon the same authorities as quoted for the Chapel & the Knowe. The name is well known as applying to both knowe & houses. Part of the Knowe has been quarried for freestone. Chapelknowe houses are the property of the Earl of Stair. |
