An independent feature - probable height from its base 100 feet. 034.09 |
A small stone foot bridge spanning Biggar Burn. It is not known at what time or by what means it was built, but is considered to be of Roman construction. The stone battlements, which, no doubt, it formerly had, from traces of them still remaining, have given place to iron railing. The name is derived from the following circumstance, mentioned in the statistical acct, [account] and is also traditional in the neighbourhood "The English are said to have approached the field by Cors-Coryne, and the Scots from their encampment on Tinto. Wallace, it is told, some time before the battle, gained admission to the enemy's camp, disguised as a cadger offering to sell provisions. By this means he ascertained their strength and position, but had no sooner departed than suspicion rose, and he was instantly pursued. On reaching a bridge over Biggar Water "(Biggar Burn)" at the west end of the town, he turned on his pursuers, and putting the fourmost to death made good his escape. There is still a foot bridge over the stream to the west of Biggar, which has been called from time immemorial the 'cadgers brig' ". |

A small town, consisting of one wide street nearly half a mile in length, and very irregular, there are several low, thatched tenements in the town, but the buildings are generally too storeys, plain, and slated. The Parish Church is a conspicuous erection, built in 1545 and still in good repair. There are two churches in the town belonging to the U. P. [United Presbyterian] body, together with two manses in the same, there are also Branches of the Royal, National and Commercial Banks of Scotland, a Post Office, School and Market house on Meal Market. There is a large Mote on Justice Seat at the western entrance of the town. "In 1451 James 2nd erected Biggar into a new burgh or barony, with all priviliges and particularly a weekly market on Thursday" this market is still regularly held. |

The remains of this castle are three disconnected towers, much dilapidated, about 20 ft [feet] in height. The original building was probably a series of towers abutting at irregular intervals from a high thick wall. The enclosure in which the ruins stand is cultivated, and the traces of the remaining towers have been completely obliterated "But by far the finest object of antiquity of which this parish could boast was the remains of the old castle of Boghall. These fine remains, standing near the middle of a beautiful vale, but a most interesting feature to the landscape, but they now serve a very different purpose having been recently demolished to furnish materials for farm buildings, dikes and the like. A small corner tower or two still mark the place where this stood." Statistical Account page 363. Respecting the origin of the name, the Stat. [Statistical] account (page354) says, "the old castle of the family of Biggar stood in the middle of a morass, and this circumstance -- has evidently given rise to its own name Boghall." |
