[Statistical Account] Vol XI [Volume 11] 309 Chalmer Caledonia Vol. III. P. 212 [Volume 3 Page 212] 030 A handsome Lake bounded by the farms of Morrowton, Ochars & Round Fell. It extends in a North and Southerly direction for about 2 Miles in length and from ¼ to ½ of a Mile in breadth. Around the Margin of which is a fine bed of Sand famed for the Sharpening of Scythes. It also abounds with Yellow Trout besides another rare Specie Called Char, not Caught with either Bait or Fly, but with net. Near the Western margin of the North end of the Lake is a Small Island Called Eagle Isld. [Island] which took its name in consequence of Eagles resorting it formerly, & also at the South end a little West from the Loch is a handsome Shooting Lodge of which see description in an adjoining Plan. OS1/20/77/6 BLOOD MOSS Blood Moss Blood Moss William Folds Andrew Rennie 030 [Situation] About ½ mile west of Loch Grennoch the parish boundary between Girthon & Minnigaff passes through it. A Considerable tract of Moss on the farms of Kitterick & Round fell. It is Said to derive its [name] from the Circumstance of a Shepherd being murdered by a neighbouring Shepherd at this place. A rude granite Stone (with inscription) points out his grave Others Say that the farmer used to bleed his young Cattle at this place which gave rise to the name but the former circumstances (from the fact of the grave being at this place) is the most probable.

[Account] of Kirkcudbrightshire 1845 Map of Property Ainslies Map revised 1819 030 A handsome lake. bounded by the farms of Morrowton, orchars, and Round Fell, it extends from North to South for about 2 miles & varies from 1/4 to 1/2 mile in breadth, upon portions of its margin is found a kind of coarse sand. which has gained celebrity for its sharpening scythes. the Loch abounds with trout which for quality stand unrivalled it also contains a rare specie of fish call char, which are only to be caught by a net, as they refuse fly or bait. it contains several very small islands one of which only has a name (Eagle Island) upon its South Western side stands a wooden house. as also a stone building adjoining. The wooden house is furnished with a nicety approaching to elegance & is inhabited in the shooting season by Gentleman renting the adjacent shooting ground The stone building affords good accommodation for the servants.The Loch is on the Estate of Cally & is the property of Horatio Stewart Murray Esqr. of Cally.
