[Situation] 1 5/8 Miles N,E [North East] of Lochfoot
The site of an old castle or place of [strength] in Cargen Glen, which the inhabitants [of] its locality says that it is handed [down] by tradition as being the site of an [old] castle which had a subterraneous [passage] leading from it to Terregles Old chapel. Samuel DicKson John Hope etc, says that it [is] also handed down, that one of its [proprietors] had strangled his lady who was [daughter] of Lord KirKcudbright Over one of its [windows] and that he had also undergone [pennence] by closing himself up in the [subterraneous] vault or passage untill his death.
The track of some of the building is still slightly visible, and is on the top of an artificial mound which [is] all surrounded by a fosse or trench with the exception of its precipitous side facing the water of Cargen. The property [of] M. Maxwell Esqr of Terregles. By the appearance of this place at present one would be led to think it was an old fort defended naturally on one [side] by a precipice & on the other by a ditch; but the tradition shows that there had been some building [here]
But from the want of authentic record there can be no certainty concerning the existence of a castle & if it really did exist it is uncertain what was the name then, as the name Collochan [Castle] applies now to the remains only. |

[Situation] About 1 1/8 miles E. [East] of Lochfoot.
This object consists of 9 Stones and is apparently an ancient Druidical Temple or circle. [the] stones are placed in a circular [position] except one which is a [little] removed from its proper place There was formerly a stone in the centre of this circle which was removed some years ago. It is considered by [all] the intelligent persons in the neighbourhood to [be] a Druidical temple. The stones are Granite [and] present a gray appearance on account of which [they] are sometimes called the Gray Stones or 7 Gray [stones] Some of the stones are yet in an upright position others are [fallen] & lying flat. The diameter of the circle is about 72 feet. & is [situated] on a small hillock on the side of a slight range of hills [on] elevated ground which commands a good view of the surrounding [country]. - In the Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Kirkcudbrightshire publd [published] 1845 is the following notice of this object, "The vestiges of a Druidical temple is to be seen upon a hill at the eastern extremity of the parish. This spot is called the Seven Gray Stones; though, in fact there are nine stones surrounding a rising ground, and forming a circle of seventy feet diameter." |

A house in tolerable repair with a few acres of ground attached as a farm. It was formerly used as a Public house & on a board above the door was the sign of a "Queen's Head" and from which circumstance it has ever since retained the given name. |

This antiquity has every appearance of having at one time had connection with the worship of the ancient Druids, the remains of which are quite visible; it consists of nine stones in a circular formation. one of which is out of place. and within the period of these 20 years the stone that was centrically placed and on which human sacrifice was supposed to have been offered was taken away. the species of these stones is a deep blue granite. though the outward appearance is quite gray. which I suppose gave rise to the name Gray stones. some are yet standing. others in a prostrated position. but it is evident they were all in an upright position, few in shape is somewhat oblong others rather circular the largest is about 5 ft [feet] by 3. ft [feet] from that they decrease in size; but surprising to think there is not nine other such isolated stones.

stones to be got in the surrounding district; there is some few of the same species but not one twentieth the size. it is not less remarKable the situation of this antiquity which is in a remote destrict on the side of a range of hills having a commanding prospect of the fertile and luxuriant vally of the Nith, also the hemisphere for which Dr [Doctor] Ingles asserts as being very convenient for taking astronomical observations which was the practice of the ancient Druids, they being the only persons possessing any learning those days. The stones form a circle the diameter of which is about 72 feet. on a small hillocK rising in the centre to the height of about 12 ft. [feet] bordered on the North. West. & South by a sort of natural fossee almost inperceptible.
In the Statistical Acct [Account] they are called the 7 Gray stones. Dr [Doctor] Ingles mentions it to me as being merely a local term. for this reason; the lower class of the people not Knowing any other name to called them by. than merely the colour on account of being ignorant to what use they were appropriated. I have made the most particular enquiry. concerning the name 7 Gray stones but of the few intelligent people that knows any thing concerning this antiquity in the surrounding 5 or 6 Phs [Parishes] they generally term it a Druidical temple or circle |
