[ Situation] 7/8 Mile North of Maxwellton
A large ruin which was ori-ginally originally an Abbey of Benedictine nuns. It was built during the reign of King Malcolm IV. by Uthred father of Roland the Lord of Galloway about the year 1150. It remained a nunnery untill the year 1400 when it was changed by Archibald the Grim Earl of Douglas Lord of Galloway & Bothwell, etc, into a college or Provostry consisting of a Provost & 12 beadsmen This Earl died in 1400 & was interred in the Sacristy or vestry here. This Collegiate Establishment remained untill 1565 when it became a temporal barony from which period it has been the property of the Nithsdale family & is now in the possession of Marmaduke C. Maxwell Esq. of Terregles. The ruin though in a very dilapidated state has been much preserved

preserved by the attention of the present proprietor. The building called the Provosts Tower is still conspicuous which was part of the Provost's House, part of the Chancel & Some of the South wall of the Church still remain Standing. In the Chancel was the elegant tomb of Margaret, daughter of Robert III. wife of Archibald Earl of Douglas first Duke of Teronan and son of Archibald the Grim. The ornamental front of this tomb is long destroyed, In a recess in the wall over the tomb is the following inscription, "A L'aide de dieu" and at some distance beneath. " Hic Iacet D-na Margareta regis Scotiae fili quondam Comitissa de Douglas Dna Gallovidiae et vallis Annandiae" - In Several parts of the building or ruin there are sculptored figures (but now much defaced) representing the arms of the Douglass family and other noblemen. The remains of what would seem to be a flower garden, a bowling green, etc are still visible near the building, there is also a large artificial mount which has a plantation of tolerable large trees on it, This mount very much resembles the ancient British Moats |

OLD BRIDGE |
Old Bridge |
James McAdam Market Street Maxwellton
J. Reddick Howgate street Maxwellton |
027 |
An old Bridge consisting of 6 Semicircular arches. It was built in the 13 century by Devorgille daughter of Allan Lord of Galloway & mother of John Balliol King of the Scots. Since its first foundation it has undergone many repairs. It first Consisted of 9 arches 3 of these having been taken down to widen the street along the river on the Dumfries side Fears being entertained that it was in a tottering State A project was formed in 1789 to build a new bridge which was carried into effect. So this bridge cannot be passed by cars or any vehicle as it is ascended by a flight of steps on the Dumfries side. It is Still in a firm Condition
["The] original dimensions of the bridge were - length 400 feet breadth within the parapets 13 feet 6 inches in width; The parapets included 16 ft 2 Inches height from the top of the parapet to the water 26 feet. Upon the bridge [is a] Small gate Called the Port which was considered as the boundary between Nithsdale & Galloway; there being 6 arches of the [bridge] within the latter & three within the former. About the year 1769 this gate was taken down in order to lessen the weght on the bridge"

RIVER NITH |
River Nith |

This River is of considerable note, it rises in the S.W. [South West] end of the Parish of New Cumnock in Ayrshire and runs through the Western part of Dumfrieshire and finally discharges itself into the Solway Frith. It divides the Counties of Kirkcudbrightshire & Dumfrieshire from its mouth to a little N. [North] of Dumfries where the River Cluden joins it, which then becomes the boundary. For a long course it appears in dry summer weather only a small Rivulet, but when rain falls abundantly it swells into an object of grandeur and terror by the rapidity of its current furiously tears up its banks and sweeps them away. Dumfries is nearly at the most Southern part where it has ever been fordable and becomes navigable from this Port to its influx to the Solway Frith. The vessels plying up the River are from 30 to 80 tons burden, chiefly employed in bringing Coals and Lime from Cumberland & provisions etc to & from Liverpool.
The River produces Salmon, Trouts, Flounders, Pikes, Eels, and a Species somewhat larger than Herrings called Hirlings. |
