023 [Situation] about 1 Mile E. S. E [East South East] from Tannoch flow. -
One of a chain of hills running in an Easterly direction from Clatteringshaws. to the junction of the BlacK Water of Dee with the Ken, And forms a boundary between these rivers. Cairn Edwar[d] only applies to the Summit which is of a Round Shape &. visible a[t] a great distance. On it is a Trig[l?] [Trigonometrical] Station Called by Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Pary "Cairn - Edward". Edward Bruce whils[t] upon the pursuit of the English through this par[t] of Galloway, and upon reaching the Summit of this hill he exclaimed that beautiful Country Must be Mine. The spot afterwards became famous and a Cairn still Called Cairn Edward [was?]Raised upon it as a Memorial of his interesting Visit. hence the name. The above Cairn does Not occur on this Plan. The Range of Hills has no name . The principal are BlacK Craig Benniguinea. Cairn Edward and Bennan Hill.
