023 [Situation] About 5 mile South by E. [East] of Upper Craigenbay. -
A large tract of Moss on the farm of Clatteringshaws on which a Battle was gained by King Robert Bruce over the English Army - On the previous night or so before the Battle Bruce was Lodging in a Widow's house in Craigencallie &. in the Morning she suspected him to be a person of Eminence. &. Modestly asKed him if he was her Lord. his answer was Yes &. also enquired at her if She had any Sons to serve him in his distress. She had 3. &. cheerfully Ascented that they should Serve him[.?] at this time the English in pursuit of King Robert are encamped on Moss Raploch. Bruce observing them maKes the Widows 3. Sons aquainted that his forces were much inferior (only 300 Men in Number) upon which they advised the King to a Stratagem that they would gather all the Horses &. Goats wild &. tame in the neighbourhood &. let them be surrounded and Kept all in a body by his soldiers in the afternoon which accordingly was done. The neighing of the horses & with the horns of the Goats. made the English apprehend them to be a great army so durst not venture out of there Camp that night. And by the breaK of day Bruce with his small Army attacKed them with Such fury that they fled precipitantly &. a great number of them Killed. On this Moss Several Spears has been found one was found about 30 years ago by an adjacent farmer whilst Cutting fuel. in this Moss Stands a large Stone Called Bruce's Stone - for which See description for an adjoining Plan -
