[Note] R. Grierson an intelligent man about 56 years of age & born in the neighbourhood
relates the tradition concerning this old chapel he says he heard it from the late
Mr. Hunter of Lochrinny that it was a tradition in his young day that a chapel existed
here at some remote period. The name Chapel Rig in some degree confirms
this tradition. Chalmers in Caledonia vol. [volume] 3. P. [Page] 320 Says, "There still exists the ruins
of Several other chapels in different parts of this extensive parish." Also, in the old
Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Dalry Parish the minister makes a similar remark.

*The following Remark appears in Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland with respect to this Burn or river
"The Cairn is more vexed than any other Scottish Stream and more vexing in its turn by the doubtful extent of the application of its
" name. In no part of its course except between Minnyhive & the point where it leaves Glencairn is its name disputed. Previous to
" the confluence of streams in the centre of Glencairn what is sometimes called the Cairn and in strict propriety undoubtedly is such figures in
" Topographical nomenclature as Castlephairn; and after the confluence of the Cairn and the Glenesland in the parish of Dunscore at
" a point 1/4 mile South of the boundary of Glencairn the united stream very generally begins to be called onward to its union with the Nith the Cluden
Nomenclature thus provides three rivers in a locality where geography exhibits only one. Similar examples occur not infrequently in other
" parts of Scotland, but are less liable than that of the Cairn to produce mistake".

URR WATER |
Urr Water |
James Chesney n.s Craigenputtock via Minnyhive
J. Muirhead n.s. Drumwhirn Toll Bar via Corsock |
017 |
A considerable stream having its source in "Loch Urr", flowing in a southerly direction to its influx into the Solway Frith at the eastern side of Hestan Island and about equidistant between the "Dee" and "Nith," receiving in its course many tributaries, all inconsiderable except "Kirkgunzeon Burn" which has a run of 10 or 11 miles. With the exception of nearly a mile where it cuts off a small portion of Urr parish, it is throughout a boundary line having Dunscore (here it divides the shires of Dumfries & Kirkcudbright) Kirkpatrick Durham, Colvend and Urr on the East. Balmaclellan, Parton, Crossmichael, and Buittle on the West. About 4 1/4 Miles before its influx into the Solway it begins to expand into an estuary and at its embouchure between Hestan Island and a headland on the east it has a breadth of nearly 2 miles. It is naturally navigable for considerable Craft for 3 miles above its incipient expansion or 7 1/4 above its embouchure. Salmon are caught in considerable quantities in wet summers, but in dry seasons seafish can get little higher than the flow of the tide. This stream from its source to its influx has a length of about 26 miles, at first flowing thro' [through] a wild country and over an irregular channel, but eventually (at Corsock) beginning to show some thickets of natural wood and thriving plantations along its banks, which give it a picturesque and pleasing appearance. Its [sides] are now and then blotted with small pendicles of Morass, but in general have a natural sward of grass, and its hill [screens] possess [a] peat elevation and are all over arable. |
