[Situation] Lying in a S.E. by S. [South East by South] direction and about 3/8 mile S. by W. [South by West] of Clenrie
This old dike or rampart is first visible issuing out of Loch Ryan in Wigtownshire upon the farm of Beoch and traversing Galloway for a bout 50 Miles over hill & dale enters Dumfriesshire and joins the "Britton Wall" after which it runs into the Solway Frith. Mr Train of Castle Douglas an antiquarian of some note) traced it through Galloway which he mentions upon some elevated spots over which it runs, remains of Watch towers are yet visible, he also states that it is invariably 8 ft [feet] at the base and has a fosse at its North or inland side. This I find to be incorrect as regards the portion which passes through the farms of Craignell Craigenbay etc etc., Mr Train is also in error in stating that it runs through the farms of Craigencallie & Garrary as it passes some distance south of these farms through the farm of Craigenbay to it meets Lochspraig Burn & then disappears, no trace of it is until it apears on the West side of "BenbracK" on the farm of Drumbuie, from the farm of Drumbuie Mr Train says that it runs through the farm of Clenrie, but it is not now visible on the said farm. It again appears on the East side of "Shinmount hill" on the farm of Largmore & continues so to the opposite side of the same farm. when it again disappears & is next visible on the farm of Stranfasket (formerly Largvey) running in a Westerly direction entering the farm of KnocKreoch on its Eastern side but only three short portions of it are traceable. and again disappears and is next visible on the West side of the last mentioned farm near a poll or Marsh Called "Loch Guizy". |

March 16. 1852
Sir
The Revd [Reverend] Mr Wilson is now
dead.
Mr John Bennet of Barscobe
States that there is some misunder-
-standing in giving his name as
authority for spelling the name of
the Farmhouse & farm in question
"Low Hardland" he now gives the
proper name as Upper Hardland
which he believes Correct, but in the
neighbourhood hears it as often called
High Hardland:
He was Tenant of Low
Hardland farm, (which joins Upper
Hardland) for some time and thinks
from this that some mistaKe has
arisen but does not pretend to re-
-member anything about giving the
authority.
It appears equally certain
that some misunderstanding has also
arisen in the Revd [Reverend] Mr Wilson's information
I cannot meet with a Single person
who has ever heard it called
"Low Hardland" altho [although] well Known
as High Hardland.
