013 [Situation] About 5/8 Mile W.S.W. [West South West] of Kirriereoch Loch.
A large lake about a mile in length and varying greatly in breadth its margin being greatly indented these indentations forming many miniature bays and promontories. It is surrounded by the parishes of Barr and Minnigaff and forms during its whole length part of the boundary between the shires of Ayr and Kirkcudbright. It is studded with islands in one of which is a heronry, these islands are greatly frequented by aquatic fowl in the breeding season. It is wholly surrounded by moss, hence the name Moan (gaelic) i.e. turf, peats, or bog fuel. It abounds with pike and trout of a large size but the latter are shy and consequently the lake is not much frequented by anglers
